Back in the day a lot of us nerds used web browsers to access files that were not served by a web server.

Typing http://example.com was a lot different than typing ftp://example.com. This was popular when MP3s started exploding in the years before napster.

Did you know you can even do authentication through the URL bar? Check it out:
http://username:password@www.example.com
