In some parts of Germany and also in Austria or Switzerland, the common word for Potato is "Erdapfel", which also means "earth apple". It's probably a European thing. ;)

most languages it is actually 'apple of the ground'. another fun fact most other languages call pineapple 'ananas' really english is the weird language

it means "apple of the earth" which shows its importance to people- it ended much starvation in europe when brought from the americas. Apples were regarded as a very wealthy high end thing, especially because of their biblical significance, so by putting apple in its name, it emphasized it's importance... sorry I'm a closet nerd and know a lot of random facts...
