well you're actually not american you're a united states citizen or how we like to call you 'gringo'... when you're talking about America you're talking about the WHOLE continent not just your country. i know its not your fault because you were raised to think that your country is called America, but for other countries like mine, its disrespectful.... PLEASE i'm telling you this politely use the term correctly... and sorry i know its not your fault.

When we say "America" we are refering to the term "United States of America" but that gets to be a mouth full, so we just drop the "United states" part. Yes, we could just say "U.S.A." but we don't end up doing that. We aren't being exculisive or disrespectful in any way what so ever. It's more of just slang. When talking about the entire continent, we usally say "the americas". Take china for example. The full term for china is "People's Republic of China". People could just call it "PRC" but most just say "China". Honestly I think people are blowing the term out of proportion. It's not meant to be arrogant or exclusive, it's just what clicks. Random thought though: haha, gringo!(:

The continent is called North America & there's a country in the continent called America, so we are American. Also, it's called United States of America.

"there's a country in the continent called America" actually, no it's the United States of America because it's a bunch of states that happen to be in the American continent.

I've heard that government was talking about officially classifying it as American because it's so far removed from the English language.

We speak English, it's just a different dialect. People in Spain speak Spanish, just like people in Mexico. We don't say Mexican's speak Mexican, they speak Spanish. English and American English aren't different languages, they're different dialects.

No. Like some one said below Spain and Mexico both speak Spanish just different variations. That goes the same with English it's still English, just because we use a few different words. People in Boston and New England use different words like bubbler, jimmies, and frappes, that doesn't mean we speak Bostonian.
