The Little Things
~Chapter 3~
I hear someone calling my name as I walk into a local cafe. I turn around to find Louis. "Oh thank God," I whisper, glad it's not Liam. I hug Louis tightly. "Wanna grab lunch?" He smiles, opening to door for me. I nod, and walk right in. We order and talk while we wait for our food. I almost ask if he noticed everyone acting different, but I decide it's not worth risking the happy conversation we're having. "How's Eleanor?" I smile, I've always liked her. She makes him happy. "Ah, lovely as ever," Louis smiles. "And Brian?" Louis winks. "Oh, Brian," I try to cover up the fact that I hadn't called him all week. "He's great," I smile. "Really great." Our food arrives and apparently, so do the other members of One Direction. "Oh," I mumble. "You don't mind, I assume," Louis laughs. I shake my head, "Suppose not," I shrug, even though I definitely do.
I can't help but notice that Liam sits as far from me as possible at the small table, as does Harry. Zayn starts to play with my hair, humming to himself, "Oh lads, I need to go meet Perrie out front," He drops my braid and heads out to meet his girl friend at the door. Louis looks up then, too. "Oh, Eleanor is here, too," He smiles. I watch them walk away. "Well, hope you don't mind the extra company," Harry mutters. I don't comment. "Hey, is everything okay?" Niall asks me. "Just peachy," I lie, a fake smile on my face. The guys get back and I hug Eleanor and shake Perrie's hand, since it's the first time I've met her. Everyone sits down and talks playfully for some time.
The guys start to talk about upcoming plans for their new music video, Eleanor talks about an upcoming photo shoot, and Perrie even adds something about a new song. Then Zayn asks, "What's been up with you, Valarie?" With a smile on his face. "Oh, just school," I shrug. As I meet everyone's blank stares, it hits me. I don't belong here. Not with these kind of people, with all these great things and plans.
"Excuse me," I mutter quickly, pushing my chair back and running outside. I start to walk home, knowing one of them will cover the bill and think nothing of it, being rich and all.
Someone's running after me, and I think to myself, Thank God, maybe someone still cares.
I turn around and it's Liam. "Hey," He says softly, coming to a stop. "Hi," I whisper, expecting him to apologzie. He lifts up my purse, "You forgot your bag," He hands it to me before waving and returning to the cafe. And right there, I've never felt so alone as I do right now, watching my former best friend leave me behind to go on with his new and improved lifestyle, along with all his famous friends.

It's eleven o'clock when my phone starts to vibrate. "Hello?" I mumble. "Come over, I have a surprise," Liam's voice says excitedly, then he hangs up. Despite myself, I do quickly run over to his house, he lets me in and up to his bedroom. He opens his laptop and hits the play button on a video. As I watch, a music video to Little Things fills the screen. I try to smile and tell him how much I love it, but I can't.
"You're the first person to see it, what do you think?" He asks, excited. "I.. uhm, I like it," I stutter. "Oh," He mumbles, disappointed. "It's good," I add. "Well, I thought, you're the first one to see it, I thought you'd be happy," He shrugs. "Should I be?" I mumble. He stares at me, shocked, "I don't understand," He shakes his head. "You've shown me a video before everyone else, big whoop. When do you start acting like my best friend again, Liam?" I snap, letting it out of my system. "I am, I showed you the video, didn't I?" He says, hurt. I shake my head. "Then you've really changed, Liam, you really have." I shrug. He stares at me, shocked. I walk out of his room while saying,
"I'm trying to be happy for you Liam, I really am. But I just don't think I can."
