(chapter one)
My eyes opened to someone hugging me closer as we laid in their bed.
I was in Dean's room. I was seventeen now, and today was the start of senior year. 
Immediately my ribs felt like fire was licking at my bones and I hissed through my teeth at the pain, lightly pushing myself away from him.
He held onto me tighter, his silent warning for me not to get up, and I closed my eyes in pain as my ribs ached even further.
I could only hope he hadn't broke them.
"Dean, my ribs," I said quietly and felt him let me go as I stood up and looked into the wall mirror that was on Dean's door.
I swallowed, lifting my shirt, remembering his words from last night.
Baby, I'm so sorry. I just lost it for a second. I'm sorry, please. It'll never happen again.
I knew that was a lie. One he told way too many times.
Then why are you still here? asked a voice in my head that I ignored. 
The side of my stomach showed a dark blue, almost black bruise spreading outwards. 
I felt two arms wrap around me gently, and Dean kissed my shoulder. 
"I love you," he said. 
"I love you too." It was automatic. I knew what would happen if I didn't say it back.
My eyes flashed towards the jagged scar that was on my hairline, too faded for people to see unless they knew what they were looking for. 
"Go get ready, I'll make you something to eat okay?" he said and I knew I was safe. At least for today.
After he beat me really bad, he was the Dean I fell in love with, apoligetic and sweet.
Unless I did something to make him angry. 
I pulled a blue tank top over my head and slid my legs through skinny jeans with difficulty, trying not to make my ribs hurt.
I ran a straighten iron through my light brown hair a few times, and left make up off.
Dean hated when I wore it, unless it was just for him to see.
I walked down the stairs like a zombie, my face blank. 
He smiled at me, noticing I hadn't put make up on, and pleased with that fact.
"Put on a coat when we leave," he said. No, he ordered. 
I nodded, sitting down and eating quickly, watching him from across the table wondering how he could ever turn into a monster like he did. With curls and bright green eyes, he looked harmless.
I knew all too well he wasn't. 
We drove to school, his hand in mine, my favorite cd playing because he was trying to show me he was sorry and he loved me.
We went our seperate ways to our homerooms, and he tightened his hand on my shoulder.
"You know I hate when you talk to guys..." he said in a low voice.
I nodded, silently.
"I love you, Haden," he said, kissing me roughly. 
"Love you too."
Walking down the hallway, that was now empty, I lifted my shirt once more, looking at the damage he'd done in bright light.
I felt like throwing up.
Suddenly someone threw me off balance by crashing into me, making me fall and my ribs hurt so bad the wind was knocked right out of me.
From the weight that had thrown me, I knew it was a guy.
Dean would hate that.
I scrambled up, pulling my shirt down, my eyes wide.
"I'm sorry," I stuttered. 
The guy, with his head down and black hair falling into his face, brushed off his jeans. 
"Don't be. That was all me," he said, and when he lifted his face I bit my lip. He smiled.
He was good looking. Really good looking.
I looked away, suddenly nervous.
I had thought the same thing about Dean when we had first met and now look at us. My ribs ached to remind me.
I walked away quick, my head bowed, praying Dean wouldn't hear about this.
"Hey, wait up!" the guy called. I only walked quicker, practically sprinting now.
I made it into the girl's bathroom.
And that's when I put my face into my knees and started to cry.
