Girls Like me .
Chapter 9.
“Jake, this isn’t your fault, not at all!” I said surprised. “Jake, y-you saved my life.”
He looked down at me, his eyes glazed over with sorrow.
“No.” He argued. “I should’ve gotten you off before I took care of myself. God, I’m so selfish!”
“Jake, stop being so hard on yourself!” I took his hands, holding them in mine. “What you did was the right thing, stop trying to convince yourself otherwise.”
He sighed, examining my leg that was currently wrapped in gauze.
“The doctor said it’ll be fine in a few days.” I began, knowing his next comment would be about by stitches. “It’s just a little scrape.”
I smiled at him, trying to give him reassurance, but he was still fully convinced that all of this was his fault. He gave a weak smile back, and even though I wasn’t the best with judgment, it was clearly fake.
“Maybe I could make it up to you?” He asked, shoving his hands shyly in his pockets.
It wasn’t like Jake to be shy. Or maybe it was, maybe it was a habit he had picked up in the past 2 years I hadn’t been around.
“I’d like that.” I gave him a sweet smile, while making myself comfortable in the hospital bed.
He smiled back, this time for real.
“We could go get ice cream after this, if that’s alright with you.”
“That sounds great.” I whispered.
“So, it’s a date?” Jake asked hesitantly.
I felt butterflies quickly enter the pit of my stomach. Even though this was all just meant to be a game of revenge, I couldn’t help but feel excited.
“It’s a date.” I smiled, trying to sound as calm as possible.
“Okay Bree, the doctor says you’re free to go now.” The nurse said, handing me the extra change of clothes Jaycie had brought in for me.
I got changed, avoiding the urge to put pressure on my left leg as much as possible. I knew that navigating on crutches the next few days wouldn’t be simple, but I was sure that I would be able to manage.

“Are you sure you should be going out again already Breanne?” My mother asked concerned, while standing in the doorway of the bathroom. “You just got released a half hour ago.”
“I’ll be careful mom, I promise.” I assured her. “And don’t call me that.”
I ran the straightener through my hair, walking on one leg started to seem a lot easier after I had experienced getting dressed with only one leg. I had on my new floral dress, that held tight around my waist, and fell just above my knees. Even though this was only ice cream, it was still suitable for the occasion.
The doorbell suddenly rang, and my mother called me from downstairs.
“Coming!” I yelled back, taking one last glimpse of myself in the mirror.
Don’t forget what you came back for Bree, I told myself, staring at my reflection. I limped down the steps with my crutches to meet Jake. And although my heart raced with excitement, I made sure that I still had a little sanity left in my head.
Reminding me that Jake,
was still the bad guy.

His eyes lit up, and I felt him moving closer to me, pushing loose strands of hair away from my face. Before I knew it, our lips collided.
