when you hear it, the memories come flooding back, drowning you in emotion.
or it shows up on your phone, right when you thought it didnt matter anymore.
or, worst of all, the person whom the name belongs to decides to slip back into your life again.
and even though you miss them oh so dearly, you dread getting attatched again.
but you know its inevitable.
and thats why love sucks.

My teacher once asked this question:
"Look back into your past and tell me the worst thing to ever happen to you."
I looked around at everyone next to me and I saw what they were thinking.
Over half of them, I could tell had nothing to say.
Another fourth had legitimate things.
But it took them a while to think about it.
And then my teacher said:
"If you couldn't think of something fast, then you must have a pretty well-ajusted life."
And then I raised my hand and asked:
"So if I knew that the worst thing that has happened to me before you even asked the question, does that imply my life is terrible?"
And her reply was:
"No, Amanda. That just means you've had more life experiences and unfortunate events happen to you at such a young age. Being here, in this moment, says how strong you are to overcome them.
This teacher might be straight and to the point.
But without a doubt, she is the smartest person I have ever met.
She is the only person that has ever acknowledged how much pain I was going through without showing it.
And I will never be able to thank her enough for that.

Why I'll be the best parent ever:
When I get into a big fight with my future teenage child and they won't back down I'm just going to yell, "Thank God I'm not your biological mother!" Then I'll watch them freak out for a few minutes before saying, "Nah, I'm just kidding." And then they'll get all mad and I'll just be like, "That's what you get for giving me attitude." And then my husband will just be there like, "Oh my God."

I've made a lot of progress. I don't think about calories or scales or thigh gaps anymore. Ever. I've gained 35 pounds. You can't see my bones anymore. I don't spend every minute of free time staring at food in the supermarket, I don't shiver whenever anyone mentions eating McDonalds. My throat has healed up, my period has come back. And I never told anyone about any of it, so the reason I'm posting this is that you guys are the only people who I feel safe telling.

horrible things happen. 9/11, school shootings, world wars, the holocaust, the bombings in Boston. and these horrible things are caused by evil people, or ignorant people, or stupid people, or people who are easily convinced and can't stand up for themselves. but i have faith in humanity. i have faith in humanity because an old man walked up to me when i was ten years old, twirling around in a long red dress, and he told me that i should dance like that even when i grow up because the sun shines out of my footsteps. i have faith in humanity because when i was twelve and my dad was getting sicker and sicker, my english teacher gave me hot chocolate when i showed up at school at seven o'clock, and a nurse in the hospital who i didn't even know kissed me on the cheek and told me that she didn't believe in god, but she was going to pray for us anyway. i have faith in humanity because when i was thirteen and my dad was dying, my friends threw me a surprise birthday party because i was too busy to have one. (my dad cried when he found out.) i have faith in humanity because when my dad got a lung transplant that saved his life, my social studies teacher offered me a place to stay as my whole family flew across the country to get him to the hospital, and when i visited the transplant unit, a boy my age touched my cheek and told me that he wished us all the best, really, and that he hoped i'd remember how to smile as my dad remembered how to breathe. i have faith in humanity because i am a human and i know that i'd rather feed the seagulls on the beach than hurt anyone. i have faith in humanity because my mum has raised me and my sister with the belief that you should never squash a bug when you can save it. i have faith in humanity because this is only some of the kindness i have seen in this world, in these people. kindness is real, love is real, hope is real, selflessness is real, gentleness is real.
i have faith in humanity, and you should, too.
