"Did you sneak out last night?" My mom places her hands on her hips. I've never seen her this angry before. 
"Um," I sigh.
"Get to your room, now. We'll discuss this later." She rolls her eyes, and goes back into the kitchen. The sheriff charges off, into his car. He turns on his lights, and speeds down the drive. 
I sit on my bed, playing with my guitar, until my mom comes up.
"You know there's a curfew." She opens the door, without knocking. It jumps me. I set down my guitar, and stand up. 
"Like you never did anything bad when you were young." 
"Listen, Meg..." She runs her fingers through her almost gray hair. "I can't get through to you. No matter how hard I try." 
I stay silent.
"But, why'd you sneak out with the Lucas' boy? You know he ain't nothin', but trouble." 
"He's my best friend mom, dad was troubled, you married him."
"Don't talk about your father like that." She throws her hands in the air. She's always defensive about my dad. They got divorced three weeks ago, even though she still loves him.
"Just..." She wipes her eyes. "Don't let it happen again." She leaves. 
"Mom, wait." I get up. "You know I'm not upta no good. I'm your good girl. I always will be. This curfew thing is just stupid." 
She does a half-smile, but continues to walk down the stairs. I go back into my room, with a cover of guilt hanging over me. 
I pick up my guitar, and start strumming the strings, new notes I've never learned. It just comes out. 
"You're pretty good at that." Blake smiles from my doorframe.
