You can choke but you can't die cause the air goes through the hole. That's why they were created that way.

you can choke on them, ok heres a long but cool story so it was 5th or 6th grade and we were doing a project and this guy in my class had life saver( we couldn't have those. well not at the moment) and we put it in his mouth and while he was like jumping or sumthing he choked on it and my teacher sprang into action she ran to the boys bathroom the class came too and somehow my teacher saved him and ( you have to read this) she got on a billbord because of him

The hole in the middle was made so that if it got caug in your throt you could still breathe :D
