Depression is not cute nor fun. It is not a quirky characteristic.
Depression is not bathing for weeks because the effort seems like far too much to handle. It is greasy hair and dirty skin. It is staying in the bath for hours, contemplating drowning yourself, and having your family call through the door to see if you are okay every fifteen minutes. It is murky water.
Depression is wearing the same clothes for a few days because you cannot be bothered to change. It is unbrushed hair and unbrushed teeth. It is stretched-out crew necks and month old stains. Depression is having your mother drag you out of bed, in the afternoon.
Depression is hiding in the kitchen whilst everyone sleeps and praying that you don't get caught with the only sharp blade in the knife block. It is hiding sewing needles behind the bathroom sink. It is sweating in long sleeves.
Depression is constantly filtering between hobbies, hoping that somewhere you'll come across one that actually gives you joy. It is uncompleted projects and unread books. It is consistent boredom and disinterest in everything life has to offer.
Depression is sad and disgusting. It is ugly and lonely. Depression is not cute nor fun.

appreciate yourself.
appreciate the stars that spent billions of years fusing to form you.
appreciate the nebulae flowing in your blood, filling it with wonder and difference.
appreciate the flowers that will someday grow from your bones.
appreciate the violets under your eyes and appreciate the sunrise in your lips.
appreciate your messy hair in the morning - the universe has a way of reverting to a natural state of chaos anyway.
find beauty in that.
appreciate the trillions of cells in your body that get you out of bed in the morning.

Universes - 1/15/14
The universe is home to billions of galaxies;
Worlds of light gathered together
Planets, like marbles on a sidewalk
Arches and stripes and splashes of color
With gaping black holes in between.
The balance of destruction and creation is fragile here.
And this intricate mess
Began with an explosion
A propelling force
Pushing everything out at once
Like water breaking free of a dam.
It shows the power of letting everything out.
You never know what it might create.
This chalkboard filled with marks that we call solar systems
This varying assortment of emptiness and bone-crushing compactness
This unknown home to everything we know in existence
It created us
It created the wind that chills us
And the moon in the sky
And the blood cells that rush through our veins
Everything small and everything large is made of the same big burst.
We are all the same. Everything around us is the same.
And this place around us
It constantly grows
Promising to close right back in one day
Revoke the spark that started existence in the first place

i used to cry over knee scrapes,
and scratches from the pavement,
and use that generic no tears baby soap to clean myself up.
it was in everyone kid's bathroom,
all purpose; hair, body, scrapes, cuts, anything but tears.
now i cry over the scrapes inside of me,
the scrapes i caused myself,
and i'd give anything to inject that
no tears baby soap into my veins,
and maybe it will get rid of the dirt inside of me, too.

so today is my birthday and even though I have one of my closest friends sleeping in a sleeping bag right next to me I still feel so alone and so weird
it's a new year and it's scary and it makes me nervous thinking about it but it's also so exciting
there are so many things to look forward to and so many things that await, whether they will leave me distraught or so so happy I'm just thinking about the what could bes and open opportunities
i hope this year brings everyone else good fortune and even if it doesn't, then I hope you find solace in something
