I'll mouth, ''I love you.''
Chapter 3
Avalaya
I sat on my bed, those horrifying events flashing through my mind. I remembered that day like it was yesterday, the day I saw what I saw and I never spoke in fear I'd blurt out the truth. 'Freak' I had been called that countless times so what Carson said had no effect on me what so ever. After Carson stormed off, Mrs Roberts had apologised for her son's behaviour numerous times. ''Avalaya, dear, dinners ready,'' Mrs Roberts called out. I slowly made my way downstairs to see Carson sitting on the dinner table. I sat down where Mrs Roberts had placed my food. ''So, Avalaya, your parents say you refuse to learn sign language…''
''Mum, can we just fuc- uh, can we just eat without talking about Avalaya,'' Carson said. I wondered where Carson's father was, maybe he left them?
''Darling, please make Avalaya feel welcome. She'll be coming to school on Monday and I expect you to help her and show her around.''
''W-what? Y-you can't expect her to be seen with me! I'm popular, if everybody found out we were living together then… you don't understand how embarrassing that would be!'' I was mute not deaf for christs sake!
''Carson,'' Mrs Roberts snapped.
''I'm going to feed the horses,'' Carson muttered.
''I'm sorry about Carson…'' Mrs Roberts voice trailed off into nothing. ''My husband, Caleb, is going to be coming home in a week. He's been away because he's trying to find someone to work on the farm..'' Mrs Roberts didn't look very old, maybe her late 30s or early 40s. She got up and started collecting the plates and I got up to help her. ''You know, Avalaya, I've always wanted a daughter and already, you're much like the daughter I've never had.''
Soon Monday came, I did go 'exploring' around the farm. There were sheep's, pigs and horses but I didn't go close to the animals. Over the weekend I had seen Carson on the farm, working. He never payed much attention to me much to my dismay. I don't know why I thought that maybe he might be interested in me… I was mute, after all. I had a past that if anybody knew that'd be running away. ''You look beautiful,'' Mrs Roberts said. I furrowed my eyebrows, confused. I was wearing the school uniform and I'm sure everybody would be wearing it. I didn't know what to expect, I had gone to a private school back home and now I was going to a public school. I could already sense that it was much laid back. I was wearing a pair of black pants, we had an option for pants or a skirt. You could wear whatever shoes you chose and I wore a pair of black converse. The outfit also consisted of a white button up top and blazer or jumper. ''Carson will drive you to school, is that alright? Your parents said that your car should be arriving soon.'' I learnt how to drive, Emilee taught me. My parents were happy, to them it was a step closer to me being a 'normal' teenager. I nodded my head.
''Now hurry along, we don't want Avalaya to be late for her first day of school. Bring her home, your father is coming home tonight.''
''Yeah, I'll be home.'' I followed Carson and got into the passenger seat. It was a black pick up truck.
Carson didn't utter any words and stopped in front of an old looking town house. ''Get out,'' he told me. This wasn't the school, it didn't look like a school and there wasn't a bunch of teenagers running around. I stayed in the car.
''No, Avalaya, this isn't the school but I'm not showing up to school with a mute girl. You're a freak and I'm popular, the schools around the corner.'' I was hurt, anybody would be hurt by his words. His words stung, real bad.
''Get out,'' I slowly got out of the car and he drove off.
