What I've learned from the Internet: Self defense techniques, art appreciation, dealing with basic life situations, politics, the economy, biology facts, to be open-minded and accepting of everyone (no matter the shape, form, gender, race, sexuality, religion, social status) the difference between gray and grey, the effect one simple, little word can have on people both good and bad, how to deal with depression, anxiety, and suicidal feelings, some of the theories of our existence, why the plague didn't effect Poland, what to do if I get buried alive, etc.
What I've learned in school: How to use a calculator to find the side of a triangle

I'd just like to say a few things.
--You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
--What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
--The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
--You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
--When half of the population gets the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them; and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

“Don't let yourself be victimized by the age you live in. It's not the times that will bring us down, any more than it's society. When you put the blame on society, then you end up turning to society for the solution. There's a tendency today to absolve individuals of moral responsiblity and treat them as victims of social circumstance. You buy that, you pay with your soul. It's not men who limit women. It's not straights who limit gays. It's not whites who limit blacks. What limits people is lack of character. What limits people is that they don't have the f//king nerve or imagination to star in their own movie, let alone direct it. Yuck."

    PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:
Politics do not have to black and white. It is okay to be part of the grey area in between. You do not have to agree with every aspect of a political party, and you are allowed to change your opinion on an issue. It is possible to be a Republican while also supporting gay rights and a woman's right to choose. It is also important to realize that not all Democrats are liberal, nor are all Republicans conservative. Another thing: Disliking Barack Obama does not make some-one a bad person, nor does it mean that they're a rac*st. And finally: Please develop your own political views; do not automatically conform to your parents' beliefs or the opinions you see on tumblr. Do some research, think for yourself, and then decide. It's okay to be different.

Your question is: why am I so interested in politics?
But if I were to answer you very simply, I would say this: why shouldn’t I be interested?
That is to say, what blindness, what deafness, what density of ideology would have to weigh me down to prevent me from being interested in what is probably the most crucial subject to our existence, that is to say the society in which we live, the economic relations in which it functions, and the system of power which defines the regular forms and the regular permissions and prohibitions of our conduct.
    The essence of our life consists after all, of the political functioning of the society in which we find ourselves. So I can’t answer the question of why should I be interested; I could only answer it by asking why shouldn’t I be interested? Not to be interested in politics, thats what constitutes a problem. You should ask someone who is not interested in politics;
“Why, damn it, are you not interested?"

Okay this is something that a lot of people here don't seem to understand and I really want to try to explain it without sounding hella condescending so keep that in mind while reading this and please don't hate me or do whatever idc.
"Oppression" is not about what happened in the past. Oppression is not about who enslaved who or what restrictive laws were placed or who discriminated against who. Oppression is about what is happening right now. Oppression happens when a bias is so prevalent in society that the bias is hard to avoid. The bias has to be unlearned rather than learned.
Racial oppression did not end with emancipation or desegregation. You can tell because history is still whitewashed and Eurocentric and people flipped their sh/t over an interracial couple in an Oreos commercial.
Gender oppression did not end with women's sufferage. You can tell because little boys still call each other girls as an insult and women are taught to be afraid of walking alone at night.
LGBTQ oppression will not end with marriage equality. You can tell because there are still people who would probably punch someone out if they were accused of being gay and trans* people are still seen as some object of comedy.
This doesn't mean that white people and men and straight people can't be discriminated against and if anyone ever tries to make you feel bad for being who you are you can tell them to f/ck right off but don't deny the fact that privilege and oppression exist.

Julia Gillard was on a plane. A normal passenger plane. She is trying to think of a way to make people happier. She gets an idea, so she calls over the stewardess and says, "Can you throw this $20 note out of the plane? I want to make someone happy."
Before the stewardess can answer the man behind them says, "Why not throw out two $10 notes and make two people happy?"
Julia starts to think about this when the man in front of her says, "How about four $5 notes and make four people happy?"
The man across from her then says, "Throw out twenty $1 coins and make twenty people happy!"
The woman sitting next to Julia Gillard turns to her and says, "Why not throw yourself out of the plane and make everybody happy?"

so, two days ago Israel launched a bombing campaign dubbed "Operation Protective Edge" against Gaza that's still ongoing. But, despite the horrors on the ground, the mainstream media seems to only be telling one side of the story.
"Israel Air Defense Intercepts More Rockets as Fighting Continues" [The Wall Street Journal]
"Palestinian rockets reach farther into Israel" [Los Angeles Times]
"Israel and Hamas exchange fire" [The New York Times]
Well. I guess I really can't expect more from the media apparatus that essentially works as stenographers for the US government.
"We strongly condemn the continuing rocket fire into Israel and the deliberate targeting of civilians by terrorist organizations in Gaza. No country can accept rocket fire aimed at civilians and we support Israel's right to defend itself against the vicious attacks. At the same time, we appreciate the call the Prime Minister Netanyahu himself has made publically to act responsibly." [White House STatement]
WAit, what? Acting Responsibly? I must be in the Twilight Zone because to me, the collective punishment of an entire population is the opposite of Responsible.
So, what's the reality on the ground?
Well, just in the last 24 hours, Israeli forces have conducted air strikes that have struck 160 sites in Gaza, according to the IDF. In total, 550 sites have been bombed and, considering the fact that Gaza is one of the most denesley populated places on Earth with over 1 million inhabitants, any aerial strike conducted in the region almost certainly means civilian deaths. In Fact, at this time, the strikes have killed at least 53 palestinians (including 8 children and an 80 year old woman).
According to the Palestinian Minister of public works and housing, at least 50 homes have been destroyed so far and 1700 damaged.
so when the IDF talks about hitting "Hamas Targets" remember that Hamas is the democratically elected leadership of Gaza which could mean any government building or social services for Palestinians.
So, while the US Government can go on and on about Israel's right to defend Itself, take heed of the increasing death rate in gaza and the fact that no Israelis have yet died as a result of hamas rockets.
Look I denounce deadly force on both sides, but it's important to not frame this as a cycle of violence that's equal. One is the colonizer oppressor, the other -- the colonized -- oppressed.
As IDF general said just yesterday, there ar etwo choices for Palestinians in occupied territories -- to completely surrender or resist. And resistance is what we're seeing now.
I'm sick of my Palestinian friends losing their friends and family every time Israel goes on the offense against innocent people living in an open-air prison.
So if demolishing homes, conducting mass arrests, and bombing civilians is "Responsible", I shudder to think how many people have to die in order to define "irresponsibility".
