quote

The thing is people can have that moment in their life where they feel so lost, so emotionless and so broken that nothing can pull them out of it. This is depression. It doesn't matter how often they feel like this. Some people only feel 'depressed' for a single night but that doesn't mean they are not depressed.

I'm not saying I've never felt that way, but in my opinion, that would not be considered depression. For example, a symptom of depression is crying for no reason, frequently. That is not sadness. That is depression. That is the feeling of being depressed. If that were to happen to one, it is most likely that they have clinical depression.

I am officially the third person to say that you can be depressed without having depression.

Here, the first definition is just "sad and gloomy," and actual depression is not mentioned until the *seventh* definition.

If that website isn't reliable enough for you, even Merriam-Webster lists "depressed" as "feeling sad."

I would rather you not shame people for their ignorance if it's untrue.

I'm entitled to my own opinion, and I feel that saying you are depressed is untrue unless you have depression. You have a different opinion than I do, then so be it. I didn't make this quote to start arguments, I made it to express an opinion. However, it's quite impossible not to defend myself and my opinion. I'm sorry if you feel like I've done something wrong by saying you cannot say you are depressed without have the mental illness, but that's my opinion.

You weren't trying to express an opinion, though; you were passing this off as fact and were incorrect.

If that's how you took it, then I'm sorry you feel that way. I did not mean to seem like I was trying to be factual, I was in fact staying an opinion, in which feeling depressed is the same as depression.

You can feel depressed without having depression. It's a stronger word than sad. But depression is a mental disorder.

Unless you have experienced it, you never truly understand. You cannot say you feel 'depressed' if you have no idea what depression is like. Are you having a bad day? Nope, that's not depression. You cannot just 'snap out of it' or 'pull yourself together'. When depression has its grip on you, life becomes water. The air around you becomes water, crushing you with its weight and even the simplest tasks become difficult. You feel sluggish, both mentally and physically and nothing can snap you out of it.

The point I'm trying to make is that depression is completely different from feeling depressed. Depressed is an emotion, depression is a mental disorder. Completely different. Lets put it this way, if i said i was feeling anxious, it means im nervous. Im not implying that I have anxiety. If you google the definition of depressed, it states: a person in a general state of unhappiness OR a person suffering with clinical depression. :3 Meaning, that they are two completely different things c:

I respect that that is the way you feel, and I feel differently, but just try to think about it from where I'm coming from. Unhappiness is an emotion, depression is a mental illness. That's the opinion I have, and I respect the way you feel.

that would be considered sadness. Depression is the feeling of being depressed. There is a different between sadness and depression.
