I don't believe in Fairytales.
Because according to fairytales, ugly people are bad people. Maybe being "ugly" caused them to made fun of and bullied by the princesses and other "pretty " people. Maybe they weren't villians to start with. Maybe they were decent people, but because they got bullied, they decided there's no point in being nice, so they go bad, and punish the pretty people for being mean.

or the fact that they're so mean that it caused them to become ugly. telling little kids that if you're a mean person it'll show on the outside too.
