I don't get it either. It's like you're in pain but then you cause yourself more pain and it's just a never ending cycle of pain.

For me it was like a build up, a build up of emotions from a bunch of my problems and I didn't know what to do with it, it just kept pushing me and pushing me and then when I cut, it was gone. It felt like I was free for a few minutes. I know it wasn't right to cut and I'm trying not to but honestly? My nerves are fried without it, it's like I'm walking on thin ice, and on top it's me and my problems and in the water it's freedom and relief because I hurt myself.

People cut because it is a pain they can control, usually they can't control the other pain in their life.

I do it for a few reasons. I have a hard time talking about why I'm sad, not that anyone cares or listens anyway. I cut because it helps me to externalize the pain I feel inside. Blood and cuts and scars are all tangible- sadness is not. Also it's a way of venting, almost. Like for me it takes a little bit of weight off my shoulders and helps me make it through the day.

Makes you feel better. It takes your pain away from what ever happened and puts in into physical pain. Much better then emotional pain. It also takes your mind of things. But, it's addictive. People can be put in rehab for it. I'm in couseling for it now. It numbs your insides. But, I still have scars from last June. Thats the bad part. People stare at them

I cut. I'll tell ya. It relieves all of the cutters pain, all of their stress, almost like it's temporarily washed away. Lets you feel relieved andwonderful about life. Makes you feel better. And anove all, it is addictive. And a mentsal disorder.

some people just hurt so much they can't take it anymore. they feel alone, abandoned, depressed, insecure, just horrible and they need to let it out. Cutting helps, a lot, it doesn't work out very well but it just feels so good it becomes addicting.

The physical pain distracts you from the emotional. The sight of the blood trickling down your arms fills you with such joy, seeing the fresh cuts, feeling the pain. It helps. It makes you feel better.

Its calming. Everything about it. The way it distracts you from life, the way you forget about all the B.S. your going through and all you think about is the moment. You watch the blood flow out and it calms you while giving you this adrenaline rush. you do get this rush and it makes you just keep going kind of. It makes you feel alive and that's what you want. You want to feel alive because you feel so numb. The way you watch your cuts turn to scars is almost fascinating to me. The way you look at your body its like a diary. It may seem sick or strange but that's it. Unless you've been apart of it you wont understand it buts that's just it.

Because with all the pain in life cutting if the only pain you can control. And because when you feel so numb all the time, the pain from cutting makes you realize that you're alive and you can still feel something. It just makes you feel so good, and then after a while it gets addicting.

Cutting makes you feel so so good . You hurt so much inside, and have no way to get it out. When you cut your body has a physical pain that it can connect to physical pain, and then it becomes addicting, because for some strange reason, you feel like a weight has been lifted off you're shoulders and you can finally breathe again.

wouldnt it be easier just to work your problems out then to go through all of that?

OliviaLee · 1 decade ago
not for some people, most people who cut don't have anyone to work it out with.

Because the physical pain distracts you from the emotional pain you feel in the inside. Anything new distracts the old, that's the whole point. No one cuts just for the heck of it.

but doesnt cutting just make everything worse? kind of like you have more problems now; physically hurting and being insecure about scars?
thumbs up 0 thumbs down reply

Bloodymascara219 · 1 decade ago
Yes, it does. But when you cut your body releases a chemical called endorphin; a natural pain reliever. The chemical causes a "happy" feeling, and another reason people do it. It doesn't get you anywhere, and it really bothers me when people will say that people self harm for attention. When I used to self harm, I did anything I could to hide the scars and like you said it just added more stress. And once you start, it's hard to stop. It's addictive. a lot of times people self harm because they don't know what else they can do.

i had never thought of there being a scientific reason behind it before. I knew about the physical pain distracting from the emotional pain. but the chemical release actually explains so much.

soo, (and i honestly dont mean to sound like a jerk) but theres like actually a reason? i mean like a chemical? i thought it was just something that like depressed people do
thumbs up 0 thumbs down reply

Bloodymascara219 · 1 decade ago
yeah, like, you know how when you laugh? It kind of brightens up your mood, you feel happier? That's the same chemical. Endorphin. And since they're depressed, it's not going to be so easy to just laugh it off, ya'know? People don't hurt themselves just because they feel like it.. there's always a reason. The first time people do it is usually just to see if it actually helps. And then, you don't want it to stop. You want to feel happy and relaxed, no one wants to be depressed. Think of it like this. If someone asked you to bang your head on the wall for $500, would you do it? Of course you would. Well, atleast I would. It's kind of the same case with cutting. Yeah, you're hurting yourself, but you're getting something out of it.

For me, when I cut- it made me feel pain on the outside instead of suffering inside..

It did. Somehow. I felt better. But cutting became addictive. And the scars are ugly..
