Pretend It's Love
~Chapter 8~
"Lucy?" My mom's voice fills my ear as I answer my phone. "Mom?" I whisper, completely shocked. Mom has a drinking problem, that's why I moved to England, to get away from her problems and start my own life. She fully supported the idea when she was sober enough to comprehend it. "It's me, baby," She cooes. Instantly, I'm five years old again, where Mommy is my hero and nothing she does could ever be wrong. After all, she is my mother, the sound of her voice will always calm me down. "What's up?" I finally am able to get out. "Your friend Veronica called, she said you might need some cheering up," She says. "Luckily, I was in one of my sober phases," She laughs at herself even though she knows I don't think it's funny. "To be honest, Lucy, I don't know what to say to you to make everything okay," I can practically hear her shrug. "I'll always be your mother and try my hardest to be your mom, but.. I've been so blinded by my problems for so long that I feel like I've lost that connection with you," Tears form in my eyes, I bite my lip, trying not to cry. Because it's true, we'll never have the relationship many girls share with their mom, no matter how hard we try. "I'm just gonna take a try and try to be the good mom I never was before," She takes a deep breath, it's shaky, like she's crying too. "My little Lucy Lu.. I have no clue what you've gone through, or what you're going through now, but I do know that no one in this world is stronger than my beautiful baby girl. If you could grow up not only taking care of me, but yourself as well, everything else will be easy. But one of the hardest things in life, Lucy, is letting someone in. Especially when they can hurt you." She whispers. "But Lucy?" She says. "Yeah, Mom?" I ask. "It can also be one of the best things in life, too." Then we hang up.
After we hang up I know what I have to do. I quickly send Zayn a text. "Meet me @ the park?" Quickly, my phone vibrates. "Be there in 10" I walk out the door, hoping I'm making the right decision.
I sit on a bench, waiting for him to get there. "Hey." He whispers, sitting beside me. "It's cold out," I mumble. He nods. "Zayn, look," I begin, trying to find words. "I know I'm not an easy person to deal with, I'm even harder to understand, and probably impossible to love.. But I do have reasons." I stare at him intently, trying to get through to him. I continue. "It's not just Ryan that's left me for appearance reasons. My mom's an alcoholic, Zayn. At first, my dad tried to keep it hidden, but when people started to find out.. He lost it. One night, he said he'd go to pick up pizza.. He never came home. We all knew why he left." I stare at the dead grass beneath my feet. We sit in silence for a bit before he says, "Thank you, Lucy." He whispers, grabbing my hand and holding it. "For opening up to me. You're right, you have reasons. But you need to understand something too," He says sternly, staring into my eyes seriously.
"You're not impossible to love. You just need to open your eyes and see that the boy sitting next to you.. never thought it was possible to love someone so much."
