’’Please, I really want to go shopping,’’ Nicole begged. She was sitting on the edge of my bed and I was wrapped in my blankets. It was in the afternoon but my head was pounding and my back was really sore.
’’Nicole!’’ Liam, my brother said. He was 20. ‘’Leave her alone, she’s sick.’’
’’But, but… ugh, fine. I’ll come over in a few hours and we can go. Get some sleep,’’ she hurried out of my room.
’’How you feeling?’’ Liam asked.
’’Okay,’’ I mumbled.
’’Okay? Do you have a headache? Does your stomach hurt? Your legs? Your back?’’ Liam kept asking.
’’Liam, I’m fine.’’ I rolled over in my bed and closed my eyes. When I woke up, it was about 3 or something and I called Nicole. I was feeling a lot better anyway. We got to the shopping centre and we walked around.
’’Do you think blues my colour?’’ Nicole asked.
I smiled, shaking my head, ’’Maybe if your hair wasn’t that colour…’’
’’You’re right… do you like these?’’ She picked up a pair of black pumps.
’’They’re gorgeous, get them,’’ I told her. Nicole’s phone beeped. ’’Who’s that?’’ I winked.
’’It’s Nick, you remember my cousin? You’ve met him… like a few months ago.’’ I nodded, remembering him. ‘‘Yeah, do you want to go see him? He’s here with a couple of friends.’’
’’Alright, let’s go.’’ We walked to the food court to where we were meeting him. I automatically recognised Nick, with his straight, dark, shoulder-length hair and brown eyes.
’’Aria! I missed you!’’ he said when he saw me, taking me into a hug.
’’No love for the cousin?’’ Nicole asked.
’’Nop.’’
’’How are you Nick?’’ I asked, keeping the smile on my face. The smile that disguised my pain so well. Right now, my back was hurting… a lot.
’’I’m good… How are you?’’
‘‘I’m good as well,’’ I mumbled.
’’I-I heard about the cancer,’’ he murmured. ’’I’m really sorry.’’ When I looked into his eyes, all I saw was pity unlike Nicole and Jamie.
’’I guess it was meant to be, I wasn’t meant to grow old,’’ I said.
’’Ah, Nick, where are your friends?’’ Nicole questioned.
’’Getting some food I think.’’
Then I heard that oddly familiar voice, ’’Rianna?’’
