    Chapter Twelve
When Hunter dropped me off at home, he hesitated on my doorstep.
I smiled at him, and said goodbye, then I started to close the door.
He grabbed my hand and pulled me outside, wrapping his arms around me, and pulling me towards him.
Then our lips collided, and all I could taste was the root beer float he had eaten earlier, and all I could see were his lashes against his cheeks.
Then I closed my eyes and kissed him back.
It was different than the kiss with Matt. That kiss felt wrong, and this kiss felt so... right.
I heard someone clearing their throat and turned to see Jack, standing, in his pajama bottems and no shirt.
    He stared menacingly at Hunter.
"Keep your hands off my sister," he said, his brows furrowed. Then Jack pulled me inside, but I was too giddy to protest.
    ~
The next day was Saturday, and Lizzie wanted to go somewhere.
She showed up at my house at seven AM without warning, wearing shorts and a tank top, telling me to wear something comfortable.
I was too happy from the night before to argue, to I ran upstairs to put on something. I chose some vintage high waisted shorts and a white tank top with a cami underneath.

As we were driving, I tried to talk Lizzie into telling me were we were going, but she ignored me, grinning.
When we got there, Lizzie squealed with delight.
    "THE CARNIVAL!" she squeaked.
    Lord help us

    Chapter Eleven
Hunter and I talked for a while, then went over to see how Zach and Lizzie were doing.
They were doing fine, if you want to call eating eachother's faces off fine.
"So, Josie," Hunter asked a little later. "I'll pick you up at 7, kay?"
He asked. I could barely say 'what' before he ran off and jumped in his car.
    I guess I had a date.
    ~
Lizzie drove me home, determined to make me look amazing.
I ended up in a yellow dress with black leggings, flats, and some jewelry.
    www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=40304779
Hunter picked me up about 20 minutes later, wearing jeans and a loose button down.
He took me to see a movie, cliche right? But it wasn't the Notebook or something like that. We ended up laughing our heads off at the Muppets.
Then he took me to get ice cream, buying me the biggest mint chocolate chip he could find.
As we were walking back to his car, I saw Matt across the street, laughing at something the blonde girl was saying, who I assumed was Nicole, his girlfriend.
He looked over her shoulder to see me staring at him, my palm in Hunter's.
Hunter tugged me along, giving me a questioning look.
"A friend," I said, smiling up at him. He laughed, and wiped a piece of ice cream off my nose
I hadn't had this much fun since i had moved here.
Sorry about the fact that my chapters are so short.

    Chapter Ten
    "Josie!" Matt called.
I ignored him. I was determined to forget about him and find someone else.
"Josie! Don't run away from me!" he called.
I stopped and turned to face him.
"What do you want Matt?" I asked, my nostrils flaring.
"Just give me another chance," Matt said.
"When was your first one? Making a random move yesterday? No. Not going to happen," I whispered the last sentence, turning on my heel and walking away.
"Josie," he called after me, but I didn't turn. I was done with that silly crush. There was no use.
    ~
After school Lizzie and I were going to the beach.
We lay down on our towels, letting the sun soak into our skin.
"I'm so glad I live by the beach," Lizzie grinned, her oversized pink shades casting shadows on her cheeks.
I laughed, nodding. "I guess I am too, Lizzie."
Suddenly Lizzie shot up into a sitting position.
"What is it?" I said, sitting up.
"Ex boyfriend, 3 o'clock," she said, staring straight ahead.
I turned to my right to see a cute boy with blonde hair hanging in his eyes looking at me. He was standing with a slightly shorted boy with dark brown hair that stuck up in all sorts of ways, who was looking behind me, at Lizzie. I turned to Lizzie, who had removed her shades, revealing her shocking set of gray eyes rimmed by her thick set of dark lashes.
She was staring longingly past me, toward the smaller boy. I stood up and made my way towards them.
They stood up, and the tall blonde crossed his arms.
"What do you want?" he asked.
"My friend, Lizzie, seems to know you," I said.
"Yeah, we know her," the smalled boy said quietly.
The blonde was glaring down at me. I looked up into his amber eyes.
"Why do you ask?" he said.
"She says you dated," I said, still looking at the blonde, but talking to the brunette.
"Yeah. A while ago. I'm gonna go talk to her, alright Hunter?" the short one said, already making his way to Lizzie, who was laying back down.
"Alright, Zach," Hunter said, glaring at me.
"Why are still standing here?" Hunter asked, sitting back down.
"Lizzie seems busy," I looked over to see Zach sitting down beside Lizzie, causing her to jump.
"Well, so am I," Hunter barked. I ignored his rude tone and sat next to him on the bench.
    "Lemonade," I told the bartender.
Hunter took a sip of what looked like root beer, and turned to face me.
    "So... who are you anyway?"
"Josie," I said, smiling at him. "Josie Doer."

    Chapter Nine
I closed my eyes, but before I could kiss him back, the kiss was over.
Matt pulled away, and gripped the wheel.
I blushed, and pulled back, too.
    "Sorry," Matt grunted.
    "S'okay," I said quietly back.
I faced the window until we got to my house. Then I jumped out, running toward the door, tears pricking my eyes.
I slammed the door behind me, and ran up into my room.
I flopped down on the covers, sobbing. Why was I crying? He just kissed me.
I heard the door creaking open, and Jack slipped in.
"What's wrong?" he asked, stroking my hair.
"Nothing," I muttered into the pillow.
"It's not nothing," he flipped me over, and when he saw my red eyes, and tear stained cheeks, he hugged me, squeezing me so tightly, it forced another round of sobs out of me.
"Shh... It'll be okay," he said, stroking my hair. "It's alright."
    ~
When I woke up the next morning, my eyes were puffy, and my hair a rat's nest.
I took a shower, and let the hot water burn off the pain.
Then I got dressed in a fox sweatshirt and a cute skirt. Then I put on some eyeliner, and pulled my hair into a messy bun.

I drove to school, the top down on my vintage convertable.
When I got inside school, I automatically found Matt.
He was leaning against a locker, talking to the tall blonde from the bar. She was stepping closer to him, and he didn't seem to mind.
I walked past him quickly, but I noticed him looking up and pushing the girl out of the way to follow me.

    Chapter Eight
I was momentarily shocked, but then I shoved him off me.
"WHAT THE HECK?" I shouted, wiping his spit off me. "Gross!"
The drunk leaned toward me, but a big hand pushed him off me. I looked up to see Matt holding the pervert by the scruff of his neck.
    "M-Ma-Matt?" I yelled, surprized.
"What did he do?" he asked, glaring at the man.
"He just kissed me, I could have handled it myself," I said, glaring up at him.
His neck turned red, and his cheeks got pink.
"Come on," he said, dropping the man, who curled up on the floor, puking up the remains of his brandy. I stepped over him and Matt grabbed my hand, pulling me out of the club
I followed him into his car, sliding down into the upholstery that I had been so scared to be sitting in just an hour ago, but was now comfortingly familiar.
"What were you doing there, Josie?" Matt barked, his eyes narrowed, focused on the streets in front of him.
    "It doesn't matter," I muttered.
He slammed on the brake and leaned over, looking me in the eyes.
    "Yes. It. Does."
Then he leaned down and smashed his lips to mine.

I ended up in an orange crop top and some high waisted sailor shorts. My shoes were converse, and I had my hair up in a loose braid.

I ran down the steps so I could get a ride with Jack to go to the party. Or, at least, I thought it was a party.
    ~
We arrived at the club about an hour later, since we stopped for frozen yogurt on the way.
"Your kidding me," I groaned. "A CLUB?"
"Live a little, sis," Jack said, shoving me over. I stumbled out of the car and let him lead me into the club.
Jack, of course, wanting to be cool, went straight for the bar.
Jack ordered a Jack Daniels, winking at the bartender, who was a pretty blonde who had way more showing that I ever would.
    "Shirley Temple," I said. "Virgin."
The lady gave me a funny look and muttered something foul under her breath.
    I turned toward Jack.
"A beer?" I asked, trying to get him to see how ridiculous he was being. "Come on, were leaving. NOW."
I pulled on his arm, but he shrugged me off.
"Come on Josie. Nothing's gonna happen!" he snapped, narrowing his eyes.
I rolled my own, and turned back toward the bar. A guy sat down next to me, scooting his stool a little too close for comfort.
"I haven't seen you around here before," he grinned, his voice slurred and his breath reeking with brandy. "Your a pretty one."
The drunk man started twirling a piece of my hair.
I tried to get him off, but before I could, he slammed his sloppy lips on mine.

    Chapter Five
I let my skin breathe during luch, by going outside for lunch.
I sat on a bench and pulled out my sack lunch. Inside was my peanut butter sandwich, apple, and chocolate milk. I bit into my sandwich and leaned back into the table.
I almost didn't notice a shadow falling over my lunch. I looked up to see Matthew, grinning down at me.
"Can I sit?" he asked. I nodded, too shocked to speak. He sat down across from me and stared at me.
"Are you going to eat anything?" I said, feeling piggish, chowing down on my sandwich and apple, my chocolate milk half empty.
"Not hungry." Matt grinned. "Don't talk with your mouth full. It's not attractive."
    He flicked my nose.
I grimaced and pulled away from his hand.
"It's not nice to hit people," I stuck my tounge out at him. I normally would have felt stupid acting like this, but with Matt, I felt comfortable, as if we'd known eachother our entire lives.
    ~
After school that day, I walked home. Jack was staying after at school to sign up for the football team. Lizzie had art club, and I couldn't ask Matt to walk me home! It would be stupid.
I was just getting on my street when a car pulled up beside me. The window rolled down, and Matt looked out.
    Fantastic.

    Chapter Four
Mrs. Toward was 5''3 of terror. From the way her heels clicked on the tile floor to the way no stray hairs fell out of her perfect bun held high on her head.
"My name is Mrs. Toward, and I am your History teacher. Now we will all stand up and introduce ourselves and tell something interesting about ourselves. Lauren Allen."
Lizzie and I waited, and giggled occasionaly during the introductions.
    Then came my turn.
"Hey, I'm Josie Doer, I'm 16 years old, I have a twin, Jack, and I am a runner."
I sat down and looked around the room to see their reactions. Most were just ignoring me, talking, or texting.
I few guys checked me out, and some of the girls were sizing me up, as if I were competition.
"That's very nice, Josie," Mrs. Toward said. "Lizzie Franklin!"
Lizzie bounced out of her seat and everyone's eyes lit up.
I could tell Lizzie wasn't snotty, but she seemed popular. Probably because the strange urge to protect her, and her bubbly personality.
"HIYA!" she grinned. Some of the guys chuckled. "I'm Lizzie Franklin, I'll be sixteen in 2 months, 13 days and 16 hours... and I have a new doggie named Porkie."
She giggled, and plopped back down.
I think even Mrs. Toward smiled.
    Just a little bit though.
    Not much.
    "Thank you Lizzie. Matthew Jones?"
I turned around to see Matthew stand up in the back of the class. I had no idea he was even in this class.
"Hey everybody," he said, his lips sliding into an easy grin. "I'm Matt, I'm 17, and I'm a runner too," he grinned at me and sat down.
I stared down at my lap to hide the blush creeping up my neck. I used my black hair as a curtain to cover my face and neck.
    Lizzie nudged me, giggling.
    "You like him!" she whispered.
"No, of course not!" I whispered back.
    But I wasn't so sure...

    Chapter Three
I found my locker and tried my combination. It didn't work. I tried again. No such luck. I kicked the locker in frustration.
A petite blonde came up and laughed.
"Let me help," she said. She took the sheet of paper and quickly opened my locker.
"You've gotta turn in twice on that second one," she grinned. "I'm Lizzie, by the way."
"Josie," I smiled, shaking her hand.
Lizzie waited as I put in my backpack.
"Your new here," she said as we walked to my first class, History. She apparently had it as well.
"Yeah. First day on the job," I gave her a weak smile.
"How's it going so far?" Lizzie asked, jogging to keep up with my long strides.
"Ok, I guess, some guy named Matthew bumped into me. He seems nice," I shrugged, even though he seemed more than nice, and my heart was still fluttering.
"Matthew Jones? Yeah. He's on track. We went to middle school together. I had a crush on him, but we were best friends, so..."
I giggled, imagining them, playing dolls, or having sleepovers.
Matt seemed so... different than bubbly little Lizzie. Matt seemed... important somehow, like he was the real shizz.
"Really?" I asked, trying to slow down for her.
"Yeah," she said, out of breath. "I was convinced we were going to be BFFs forever. Then we came here, and, well, me met Trever Johnson Campian, and joined the track team. And the rest is history."
I remembered TJ, and their bro exchange.
    "Oh," I said. "Sorry."
"It's alright, I found some other friends," Lizzie laughed. "And now I have you too."
My heart was growing for this girl. She was so tiny, and so adorable, it was hard to believe she was over 13, let alone a sophmore.
By this time we had reached History class.
We chose seats derectly next to eachother, and we talked until the class started
    Until the teacher came.

    Chapter Two
I walked into the giant high school. It was so big. My old high school wasn't half as large as Woodland High.
It was crazy inside. Kids shouting, throwing books, laughing, talking, getting caught by teachers.
I pushed past the crowd. God, it was stuffy in here. And hot. And sweaty. The smells of BO and crappy coffee filled the hallways.
I shoved and squeezed my way out of the mess and into the quiet of the office.
I cute lady looked over her glasses at me.
"May I help you, dear?" she asked, her grey hair falling out of her uniform bun.
"Yeah. My name is Josie Carter, I'm here to get my locker combination," i said, smiling.
I bounced from foot to foot, anxious to get this over with and start my dangerous journey into the center of the madness, the lockers.
She handed me a slip of paper with some numbers on it. Locker 85... combination 18-6-44
    Easy enough, right?
I thanked her and pushed open the door and took a step out into the wild.
Only to be knocked into by someone.
"Sorry," the bumper in question mumbled. I looked up to see a flop of light brown hair and a pair of light green eyes.
"Ith otayy, I mean... It's okay," I said, tounge tied.
    "I'm Matthew," he grinned.
"Josie," I replied, shaking his hand. My tiny hand was practically swallowed by his massive one. It was warm.
I smiled up at him, and he grinned back. I didn't realize we were still holding hands until another boy came up and clapped Matthew on the back.
"HEY MATT," he grinned, his red hair flopping into his eyes. "Ready for the race tonight?"
Matt grinned and did one of those weird bro hugs with the boy.
"Yeah, see you there TJ," he grinned. The boy ran off.
"Nice meeting you, Josie," Matt smiled at me.
"Yeah you too," I muttered as he ran off in pursuit of TJ.

    Chapter One
My name is Josie. I'm 16. And this is my story.
    ~
I lay my tattered copy of The Giver down on my bed. Tomorrow, the first day at Woodland High, my new school.
    I was terrified.
I was never very good with... well, people in general. Hand me a bunny, I be dandy. Hand me a baby, I'll have a panic attack.
I stood up and stomped out of my room to knock on Jack, my twin brother's, room.
"JACK! I CAN'T READ!" I yelled, pounding on the wooden door.
He opened the door, and the sound of his band, Rocks and Sticks and Things That Roll, came bursting into the hallway.
I covered my ears and glared at my brother.
I looked nothing alike. No one ever assumed we were related, let alone twins. He had a mop of curly blonde hair and big blue eyes. Really the only thing similar about us were our eyes, but his were lighter. He was tanner than me, and he grinned cockily at me, leaning against the door.
"Hey sis. Whadaya need?" He asked. I uncovered my ears, but kept them ready, in case he turned it up.
"I can't concentrate. I want to read. Can you PLEASE turn that down?" I implored, my ears ringing.
    He shrugged. "Yeah, I guess."
Then he slammed the door in my face.
I waited until I heard the music volume go down before trudging back to my room. I lay down on my big bed and sighed.
I looked over at my clock.
    11:OO
I turned off my light and let myself drift off into the land between life and death, sleep.
    Good?
