Creepers
Chapter
6
I wake in the middle of the night
and hear faint moans coming from Everett. I lightly feel his
forehead; his fever is burning up. I’m not sure if I should
try to lower his temperature by cooling him down or keep him
bundled in his sleeping bag and hope that his fever will crest
and break in the morning. His skin in pale and he has a layer of
sweat covering his skin. Every so often he flinches and his
breathing hitches. I’m not sure if it’s the right
thing to do, but I decide it’s best to try to lower his
temperature.
I don't want to do anything too drastic, so I start by
unzipping his sleeping bag and letting his body be exposed to the
cool night air. I shift slightly, trying not to wake him, and
grab the rag in water I’ve had beside me throughout the
day. I wring out the rag and run the rag gently across his
forehead and cheeks, hoping the cool water will help his
temperature drop. I run the rag lower and lower down his face,
over his chapped lips, down his chin. I dip the rag in water
again and wipe the cool water down his neck, as I move the rag
down to his collar bone, I am aware of eyes watching me. I look
up to Everett’s face and though it’s hard to see with
only the moonlight and shadows cast from the fire, I see his eyes
are open and staring at me.
At that moment I blink and am glad for the darkness because I am
pretty sure I blush a deep red. I’m frozen as I stare back
into Everett’s eyes, not sure what to do or what to say, my
hand still holding the rag lying on Everett’s chest.
He shifts slightly and I feel the warmth of his hand covering
mine. I gulp and open my mouth to say something, anything,
to break the silence, but I can think of nothing.
“Thanks doc,” he whispers. His voice is hoarse and
weak.
I bite my lip before saying, “Go back to sleep.”
He stares at me and slowly brings my hand up to his cheek,
pressing his hand firmly against mine as if he doesn’t want
my touch to leave him. I weakly smile at him as his eyes flutter
shut. Though his breathing starts to slow as he falls back
asleep, his grip on my hand stays firm and strong.
I take a breath and watch his chest rise and fall slowly as he
sleeps. Eventually I free my hand from his grasp.
What just happened?
I think about the events that just took place and wonder if
Everett will even remember it in the morning.
I lean back against the tree trunk and stare at the fire a couple
yards away. I start to feel my eyelids get heavy and I soon fall
back asleep.
