    Creepers
    Chapter 22
We find a car on the side of the road and sprint over to it. Everett opens the driver’s seat and finds a corpse sitting there. We stare, but it doesn’t move, so he rips it out of the seat. He gets in and turns the key. It starts up pretty easily.
“Half a tank,” says Everett. “We are going to need to get more gas.”
I nod as I load the bags into the back of the truck. Everett gets out of the car and helps me load them.
    “Are you okay?” he asks.
“I’m fine.” I shrug my shoulders. “I just want to get this over with.”
    Everett nods. “Me too.”
We get in the trunk; I sit in the passenger seat, hugging my knees, and we take off down the road. I stare at the desolate areas we pass and wonder what they were like the day of the apocalypse. Did children live in that house? Did the husband return home to his pregnant wife? Did the girl that worked at the food store get to see her boyfriend again? All these things come to mind as we drive slowly down the road, looking for a gas station.
Not even ten minutes later, Everett finds one and we pull in. He fills up the tank quickly and fills three extra cans, putting them in the trunk. I bite my lip and turn the radio on, but all I hear is static. I don’t know what I was expecting to hear, but I am a bit disappointed. Everett gets back in the car and hears the static from the radio. He flips through all the stations, but we hear nothing but the constant static. I growl and slam the console of the car.
“Why can’t any of this be easy? Why can’t there be others to help us? I didn’t sign up for this!” I scream in anger and frustration.
Everett puts a hand on my shoulder. “No one signed up for this, Riley, but we must be alive for some reason. We must be doing something extra special, even if we’re not supposed to because we survived when no one else did. We can’t waste that.”
I nod, knowing that he’s right. “Okay, Everett. Just drive, please.”
He nods and drives off down the road again.
I must fall asleep because the next thing I know I’m opening my eyes and staring out the window at the darkness. I look at Everett and see bags under his eyes. His eyes are red too, I think maybe he was crying.
“Everett, do you want me to drive?”
He shakes his head and keeps his eyes on the road.
“Come on, Everett, you’ve been driving all day. You need to rest too you know.”
“Fine, fine, but wake me up if you need me.”
    “Of course.”
He pulls over to the side of the road and we climb over the seats, so that I am in the driver’s seat and Everett is in the passenger’s seat. He turns to face the window and slumps on his side. I drive for a while and I have to admit that the silence is chilling. I relive the events of the day and a lump forms in the back of my throat. My eyes start to swell up with tears until I can’t see the road clearly, so I pull over and lean my forehead against the steering wheel and cry. I’ve lost everyone; everyone except Everett of course. I don’t even remember seeing Hook, but I’m glad I don’t because if I did I think I would lose it.
I’m tired. I just feel tired all the time and I don’t want to go on like this, but I will because if I don’t it will hurt Everett too much.
    I can’t leave him alone.

    Creepers
    Chapter 21
We walk through the woods in silence. The sun is just starting to rise over the trees as we get closer to the campsite. We get to where the guards were last night, but we don’t see them. All we find is a discarded boot.
We give each other a look and quietly make our way to the camp. When we get there both our jaws drop wide open. The camp is a mess and as we scan the campsite we see creepers gorging themselves on what looks to be our fellow group members.
My heart jolts as I sling my gun off my shoulder and shoot down the creepers. Everett is beside me shooting, his eyes wide and scared and I wonder for a moment if I look like him too. The creepers eventually all fall to the ground and stop moving. I drop my bags and take a couple feeble steps forward.
“Everett…” My voice is weak as I look at all the bodies around us. One starts to move and I see that it is Chris.
“Chris!” I scream and run to him as quickly as possible.
He is breathing quickly and grunting, his face contorted in pain. Both his legs are gone, a pool of blood in their place. I focus on his face and grip his hand tightly.
“Chris, I’m so sorry!” I choke out.
“Where were you?” He pants and groans.
“We-we were in a town. We found so much food, Chris! A-and you’re going to help us eat it.”
He lets out a long groan and then laughs. “Don’t kid yourself Riley. Just shoot me now.”
I shake my head and whimper, “I can’t.”
I hold onto his hand as we stare at each other. Eventually his hand slackens and the glow leaves his eyes. I hang my head over his body and cry. I stay in that spot for at least another two or three hours, not moving or talking. Everett walks around the camp cleaning up some things, but I tune him out. I close Chris’ eyes and brush back his hair from his forehead. I think about all the times Chris has had my back; how many times he’s saved my life and I’ve saved his, and how all of that is gone now.
That’s when I hear him take a breath. Everett must hear it too because he is by my side in an instant and pulling me away and to my feet. I watch as Chris’ eyes open and he starts to crawl towards us. He gnashes his teeth at us and makes a sickening sound come from his throat. Everett fumbles for his gun and I close my eyes as I hear the gun shot go off. My breath catches sin my throat as I open my eyes. I try to suck in air, but I can’t.
“Everett…” I whimper again and start crying. I slowly lower to my knees and sob into my hands. I feel Everett’s arms around me as he clutches me tightly. I hear a low sniffle and a mumbled sorry come from Everett’s mouth. I cry into his shoulder and feel something wet drip onto my forehead. I look up at Everett and see tears silently sliding down his cheeks. I stop crying as best as I can and wipe away Everett’s tears. He watches me and lets out a long sigh. I wipe the tears from his face and he does the same to me.
    “We-we need to… build a fire…” I murmur.
Everett nods and we slowly start to move around the bodies.
Once we get the fire going, Everett places a towel over every body’s face, so we don’t have to look at them. We pick up the bodies one by one and throw them into the fire. Afterwards we spend about an hour scrubbing our hands and faces clean. I keep murmuring apologies to no one in particular. Somehow Everett is able to fall asleep and I am left alone with my thoughts. What if Everett and I had been here? Would everyone still be alive? The guilt rises up in me and I realize I am shaking badly. Just as I’m about to scream Everett grabs hold of me tightly. I flinch, not expecting him to wake up so soon.
“I had a nightmare.” He mumbles into my ear as he tightens his hold on me from behind.
“About what?” I have to ask.
He pauses before answering. “About you. I lost you and I felt like a part of me died with you.”
I take a breath. “I am not going anywhere.”
“But what if you do? I don’t know what I would do without you,” he blurts out.
I bite my lip as he rests his head on my shoulder. “I won’t leave you, Everett. Not now, not ever.”
He tightens his grip on me and holds me firmly but gently. We watch the fire as the sun rises. It smells like cooking meat and I try not to remind myself that those bodies were my only friends left. We slowly gather our things and any important supplies that our friends cannot help us with anymore and head back into town, leaving the fire burning behind us.

    Creepers
    Chapter 20
Everett shakes me awake early the next morning while everyone is still asleep. There are two guards awake, watching over the fire and everyone else. We grab our bags as we try to figure out how to get passed the guards.
Everett ruffles my hair slightly and whispers to me, “Follow my lead.”
I nod and he grabs my hand and puts his other hand around my waist. He pulls me forward roughly so we are both crashing roughly towards the guards. Everett laughs and holds me tightly as he motions to the guards. “Come on, babe! They’ll let us pass.”
He looks at the guards and then gives me a big kiss. I gawk, but then see where Everett is going with this and take his advice in following his lead. I giggle in a high pitched girly way and wrap my arms tightly around his neck. Everett winks at the guards. “Come on boys, if you let us go you can have her when we get back.” I gasp and laugh, a little too harshly, and slap his chest playfully, but enough for him to feel it.
The men nod excitedly. “Have fun you two.”
Everett flashes them a grin and laughs, leading me into the dark woods, both of us giggling until we are out of hearing range. As soon as we are, he lets go of me and moves over, creating a gap between us. “Too much?” he asks.
I shake my head. “No, but you better keep those guys away from me!”
He laughs and nods. “Fine, fine. I guess that’s fair enough.”
We make it to the small town and stand at the edge of the woods, listening for anything unual. My gun is at my side as we go to the town. There are not many stores around and when we look through the glass of the mini mart we can instantly tell we hit the jackpot. We pry open the electrical doors and head inside. Both our mouths drop as we look at all the food; I’m pretty sure my stomach grumbles out loud. I walk over to the shelf and pick up a bag of chips. I open them and take out a chip, crunching on it.
“Oh my god, I missed these so much.” I groan as eat them.
Everett and I take our time eating half the bag before putting them away for later. We go up and down the aisles, filling our backpacks with and an extra duffel bag with an assortment of foods. Everett drags the duffel bag to the drink section and fills it with waters, juices and energy drinks. I walk down another aisle and see medicine bottles and gauze so I grab them and stuff them in my overloaded bad.
    “Riley! Come here!” Everett calls.
I rush over, thinking something is wrong, but when I get there I see Everett holding some food in a package. “What is it?”
He opens it and grins, showing me a small chocolate cake. I look at the cake and start laughing. Everett and I are both cracking up as he splits the cake in two and hands me half. I grin as I eat the cake slowly, trying to savor the taste but all too soon it’s gone. I hug Everett tightly. “That was the best chocolate cake ever.”
He laughs low and hugs me back tightly. We stay like that for a moment before I pull away. “Come on, we should be getting back to everyone now.”
Everett nods, so we grab our bags and leave.

    Creepers
    Chapter 19
It’s been a week since Everett and I got back to the group. Things have been pretty easy this week. We haven’t had any problems and have been making good time; we’re nearly three quarters of the way there. I keep wondering how things are going to be after everything is over. It’s actually kind of unnerving to think about.
Everett walks over with bowl of porridge and sits down beside me. The bruises on his face are a deep purple and green, but they are getting better. Hook had to reset my fingers and I think it was one of the most painful experiences of my life.
“How are you, Riley?” Everett brakes me from my thoughts and I just shrug. “You know there’s a small town not too far from here? We could go and check it out if you want, just the two of us.”
I pause and think about it for a moment before nodding my head excitedly. “Yeah that would be cool.”
He grins. “Good, we’ll go tomorrow.”
“What do we need? I know I’m getting low on ammo.” I say.
“Well I’m still keeping my eyes out for some chocolate cake.”
I laugh and rub my stomach. “I could definitely go for some chocolate cake!”
He rubs his stomach too. “Well, I’ve been watching my weight, but I think I can make an exception for chocolate cake.”
I giggle, but then look closely at Everett. He has definitely lost weight, not that he was heavy before, but now I can see the gauntness in his cheeks, the bones sticking out prominently. I too hae lost more than enough weight; my ribs are starting to stick out. Everett and I have both lost muscle too, though we are both able to go about out duties.
I sigh and lie down, looking up at the sky. “I can’t wait for this to be over.”
“Neither can I,” Everett sighs out as he lies down beside me.

    Chapter 18
I feel the wind on my face when I wake up and I sit up quickly, looking around. I groan from the quick movements, but when I get my bearings I see that I’m back at camp, but I don’t see Everett. I get up and go through my bag until I find my sweatshirt and throw it over my head. I get up and find Hook, quickly pulling him aside.
    “Where’s Everett?”
He points to a makeshift tent. “He was pretty beat up when we found him.” He must see the shock on my face because he adds, “He’ll be fine, Riley.”
I nod and head towards the tent. I take a deep breath just outside the tent and go inside. I see Everett asleep in a sleeping bag with a couple blankets around him. His face is partly bandaged and swollen. I sit down next to him and grip his hand. I’m not sure what happened to him; he didn’t look like this when I saw him, but I can tell he is in pain. I stroke his hand and wipe my eyes to stop myself from crying.
It would be wrong to leave Everett so I lie down next to him and drape an extra blanket over my lap. I watch Everett sleep and wonder about our kiss. Did it actually mean anything or was it all in the heat of the moment? What if it really did mean something to Everett and I totally shut him down? Of course I care for Everett, he’s my best friend, but there’s just too much going on right now to try to figure out all my feelings. I mumble a sorry to Everett before lying down and falling asleep.
When I wake up, Everett is still asleep, but his breathing seems too fast for him to be sleeping. I scoot closer to him and whisper, “Everett?”
He sighs and opens his eyes. We stare at each other for a minute before I close the gap between us and hug him tightly. He groans and I ease up on the hug.
“I’m so sorry! Are you okay?”
I help him lie back down, but he keeps a firm grip on my hand. “I’m fine, Riley.”
I bite my lip. “You don’t look fine.”
    “Well I am,” he says.
I look at him harshly, get up, and walk out of the tent. The light blinds my eyes briefly as I walk out. I hear Everett call my name as I storm off into the woods. I run through the woods and scream shrilly, kicking and punching random trees.
I drop my hands once they are bloody and sore. I sit against a tree and hug my knees tightly, glaring at the ground. I hear footsteps and I turn around ready to run, but it’s only Chris. He sits down beside me and asks, “I saw you run off. What’s wrong?”
    “Nothing,” I mumble.
He rubs my shoulder. “Come on, why don’t you come back to camp?”
I shake my head. “I don’t want to go back to camp.”
“Then where do you want to go?”
I look at Chris and mumble, “Home…”
He keeps rubbing my shoulder. “I know. Everyone wants to go home, but we have to stick it out just a bit longer.” I groan but he continues, “We will get to D.C. and we will stop this epidemic.”
“How can you be so sure? How can you be so optimistic?”
He pauses for a moment to think. “Hope,” he says, “that this is not the way God intended us to end; that it’s just another stepping stone for the human race to learn from, not be destroyed by.”
I stare at him a moment, mesmerized by his words. “I hope you’re right, Chris.”
He smiles and takes my hand, helping me up. “Come on; let’s go back to the others.”
He leads me towards everyone else and this time I don’t fight back.

    Chapter 17
Hunter and the men leave the room, the lights shut off and shortly after the chains robotically release us. Everett falls to the floor and I race over to him. I help him sit up and hug him tightly, crying quietly. He tests his joints and slowly wraps his arms around me, embracing me in the tightest hug ever.
“I’m so sorry, Riley,” he whispers in my ear, his head resting on my shoulder.
I bury my head in his chest and he rubs my back soothingly. We hold each other in silence for a long time. The darkness feels never ending and I’m scared of what will happen tomorrow. I do not want to be chained back to the wall as I watch Everett be beaten.
I look up at him. “Everett?”
He smoothly lifts his head from the crook of my neck. “Yeah, Riley?”
I blush and am glad for the darkness. “I just… I can’t watch you get hurt anymore.” I choke on my words. Everett smooths out my hair and holds me closely. He doesn’t answer me, but I’m positive he feels the same way by the way he is holding me. I clutch onto the hem of his shirt like it is my life line and bury my head in his chest. He rests his head back on my shoulder and I feel his lips press against the nape of my neck and shiver; his breath soft and warm against my skin. I tilt my head slightly to look at Everett and he lifts his head to meet my eyes. My breath catches in my throat as Everett leans into me and presses his lips to mine.
It takes me a second to comprehend that Everett is kissing me, but I quickly return it, wrapping my arms around his neck. His arms snake tightly around my waist as he deepens the kiss. I lower my hands to his chest and slowly pull away, not sure how I should feel about what just happened.
    “Everett, I-“
He cuts me off. “No. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.”
I shake my head and kiss his cheek gently. “No, it’s not that. I just… We’re in the middle of a war, Everett… I’m just not sure now is the right time…”
    He nods. “I understand, Riley.”
He caresses my cheek and I lean into his touch. He keeps his arms wrapped around me as we huddle in the dark corner together. I let silent tears fall down my cheeks as we sit together. I don’t want Everett to see or hear me crying.
Just as I am about to fall asleep, I hear the patter of tiny claws against the tile floor.
My eyes widen and I stand up quickly. Everett stands beside me and I feel something pull at my pant leg. I yelp and kick the rodent off my clothes. Everett stomps on some of the rats; I hear them squeak under his shoes. I feel one crawl up my pant leg and it starts to bite me, shrieking, I beat at my pants trying to kill the rat. It falls out as I feel another clawing at my leg. Everett and I kill the rats as quickly as possible, but still get several bites and scratches. I stand straight against the wall gathering my breath. I hear Everett sigh a low sigh. We move closer, our shoulders just touching, but Everett doesn’t put his arms around me like usual. It feels weird not to feel his touch, but I guess I understand why he doesn’t. I feel too drained to cry anymore, so I just thump against the wall and fall asleep.
When I wake there is a chain locked around my wrists. I see Everett chained across from me. I glare at the tile floor in aggravation as I hear the door creak open. Everett pulls against his chains, but I don’t even look up. Hunter kneels beside me and lifts my chin. I look past Hunter and see Everett’s eyes bug out when Hunter touches me, then he slumps his shoulders and bows his head. I glare into Hunter’s piercing green eyes. He caresses my cheek and I turn away from him.
He whispers into my ear, “I hate doing this to you. Why don’t you just tell me where your little gang is headed?”
I look at Hunter and spit in his face. “Over my dead body.”
Hunter frowns and I feel his taser up against my body. I scream and cringe against the taser as it shocks me. I stop fighting then, not feeling enough strength to keep fighting. I fall and huddle in a shuddering mass on the floor. I hug my knees and cry out as he tases me again. My tears spill onto the floor and I’m pretty sure I can hear Everett screaming at Hunter, but I’m not positive because all the sounds meld around me and I pass out.

    Chapter 16
I am awakened in the night by the shuffling of feet. I rub my eyes and sit up, looking around. The fire is dimming so I have to squint to see. I turn my head just in time to see a man throw a sack over my head, so I can’t see.
“Everett!!” I scream in panic as a hand is clapped over my mouth. I scream into the hand and try to break free of their grasp. I hear Everett wake from my muffled shouts. He calls my name as I am dragged through the dirt. I can hear him also getting bagged. I hear flesh hitting flesh and cry out, afraid that they are beating him.
I am dragged through the woods by two pairs of hands for some time, my body chafing against the ground, until I hear a door open and am led through a building. They chain me to a wall as I struggle against them. Once they finish it is hard for me to move much, the chains pulled tight just for this reason. I hear grunting and more chains being moved on the wall opposite of me. The bag over my head is finally pulled off and I squint from the excessive light. When my eyes adjust I see Everett chained to the wall opposite of me. He hangs his head, his hair covering his eyes. His nose is dripping blood onto the floor and I know I was correct about them beating him.
I struggle against the chains for a couple minutes before slumping against the wall. The boy, Hunter, walks up to me and lifts my chin. I try to bite his hand, but he pulls away too quickly. “Welcome back sweetheart,” he says with a grin.
I glare at him and say nothing.
He walks over to Everett. “You know your little girlfriend’s pretty cute even with those bruises and burns all over her. You know who put those there? Yeah, I did.”
Everett barely lifts his head, but he does so just enough to look at me.
Hunter continues, ”This time you can watch.” He walks over to me and pulls something from behind his back, presses it to my rib cage, and presses a button. A shock of electricity runs through me and I let out a short scream, closing my eyes and gritting my teeth. I hear Everett pull against his bonds.
“What do you want? Let her go, I’ll give you whatever you want!” Everett stares at me as I collapse against the wall, breathing heavily.
Hunter grins. “I want information. Tell me your plans. How are you going to try to stop the zombies?”
Everett opens his mouth to say something, but nothing comes out. I stare at him and shake my head roughly. He can’t tell them anything. He starts off, “Well… we are-“
I cut him off and scream at him. “Don’t tell them anything! You can’t! Everett, they’ll ruin everything!!”
Hunter punches my stomach and I lose my breath. “Shut up.” He turns back to Everett. “Come on, tell me and we’ll just let you and your girl go. It’s that simple.”
I shake my head at Everett and start crying. “Don’t tell him…”
Everett glares up at Hunter and shakes his head, saying nothing.
Hunter sighs. “Why do you have to make everything so complicated?”
He snaps his fingers and three burly men walk into the room, heading for Everett. My eyes widen as they all start to beat him at the same time. He yells and tries to break free of the chains to fight back, but he is powerless. I push against the wall trying to get to Everett, but I can’t, so I scream in frustration and fear as they continue their assault on him. Hunter snaps his fingers again and the men stop the beating, backing away from Everett. He is slumped against the tile floor, his breath ragged. I start sobbing, my hair sticking to my face from the tears. “I’m sorry Everett. I’m so sorry…”
Hunter rolls his eyes. “How sweet, but if you really wanted to help him you would tell us the information.”
I shake my head as tears roll down my cheeks. Everett’s hurt and it’s all my fault.
Hunter advances towards me and starts to unwrap the ace bandage around my broken fingers. Hook had been able to set them and said they would heal nicely. He takes one of my fingers in his hand and grins at me. I close my eyes and clench my teeth knowing what is next. He snaps back my finger and I cry out. He does the same to my other two fingers that had been broken before and I cry from the white hot pain I feel. I keep my eyes shut tightly, not wanting to see the awkwardly bent fingers. When I finally open them I see Everett staring at me, his eyes showing grief and vulnerability. All I want right now is to have him hold me and tell me everything will be okay even if he knows it’s not true.
    I want Everett.

    Creepers
    Chapter 15
When my boots hit the asphalt I grin, surveying the quiet town and seeing no movement what so ever. We split into two groups to cover more ground quickly. Half the group comes with Everett and I and the other half goes with Hook.
We make our way to a super market. Chris, one of our crew members, pulls the sliding door open since the electricity is not working. We walk inside and I head to the sports section to see if there are any bullets left. I find one open box that is half full. I pocket it and make my way to Everett in the food section. I survey the almost bare shelves and mutter, “I don’t see any chocolate cake.”
Everett snickers. “I don’t see any pasta either.”
“We’re not going to find anything in here. We need to find a less mainstream store.”
Everett nods and picks up a leaking can of soup and pockets it.
    ***
Once we’ve gathered everything we could find useful, we group back together and make our way out of the store. We start to walk to the other group’s store and when we get there we find it crawling with creepers. We all pull our guns and race towards the store, shooting creepers as we go. I can see most of the crew straggling out through side exits.
    I glance at Everett. “Hook?”
He shakes his head and keeps shooting down creepers.
I sneak closer to the building and slip inside one of the side entrances. I stealthily make my way through the store, following the footsteps of the creepers. I find Hook cornered by the creepers and tiptoe around to find a good angle to shoot at. I aim carefully and shoot them all down, only needing to use the bullets necessary, none more. I run to Hook and grab him, pulling him as fast as possible; he seems to be limping. Everett is at the door, keeping it clear for us as we leave the building. We help Hook as quickly as possible back to the woods where we had set up camp. When we get there not everyone is back yet, but a couple others take Hook from us to help him out.
I sigh and sit down against a tree, catching my breath. Everett sits beside me.
“You know, Riley, you really shouldn’t keep running into trouble like that,” he smirks.
I roll my eyes. “Well I just wanted to make sure none of my friends were dead. You know? Gotta keep a lookout for that type of stuff nowadays.”
He smiles and nods. “Of course, of course. I wonder where everyone else is.”
    I shrug. “I hope they’re alright.”
About ten minutes go by before everyone else comes into camp. They have someone on a handmade stretcher, covered by a blanket so I cannot see their face. I pull over Seth, who just walked in with everyone.
    “Who is that?”
He shrugs. “No one’s sure. He’s not part of our group. He helped save a couple of us, kept coming in and out of the building. We thought it was only fair if we helped him out after he helped us.”
I nod. “Okay, well when he comes to tell him he can stay with us if he doesn’t have anyone else to get back to.”
He nods and walks off to help the wounded boy.
When the sun sets and everyone has settled around the large bonfire, Hook clears his throat. “As you all know, a boy came to help us during a time of need today and we feel it is only reasonable to give him a spot in our crew to pay back his favor of kindness. Please welcome our newest member, Hunter.”
The boy steps out of the shadows and into the light of the fire, smiling and waving to everyone. When he looks my direction the light from the flames brighten his face so I can see the distinct features of his face.
My breath gets caught in my throat as everyone else cheers around me and I grab Everett’s wrist harshly. He looks at me and I stand quickly, pulling him with me away from the group.
“What’s the matter with you, Riley? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
I gulp and gasp for air, running my fingers through my hair. “T-That’s the boy, Everett!! He was the one in the cabin when I… when those things… He was the one! Everett, why is he here? He can’t be here! Not now! Not ever! He needs to leave. We have to tell Hook.”
I can feel myself hyperventilating and Everett holds me steady. “Okay, okay. Are you sure it was him? Positive?”
I nod and start tearing up. “Make him leave, Everett!” I stomp my foot for emphasis.
He licks his lips and I can tell he is thinking. “I will. Of course I will. I’ll have to get Hook alone first so I can talk to him. Until then don’t leave my side for anything, understand? I won’t lose you again.”
I nod and chew on the inside of my lip. “Talk to Hook soon, please,” I whimper quietly to him.
He gives me a tight hug. “Come on. Let’s go to bed, okay?”
I nod and he leads me to where our things are already sprawled out. We get into our separate sleeping bags, but I scoot mine as close as possible to Everett. He wraps an arm around my body and I feel better. It takes me a while, but I am able to fall asleep to the sound of everyone’s chatter by the fire.

    Creepers
    Chapter 14
When I wake up I realize I am slung over someone’s shoulder. As we walk my vision starts to clear and I prop myself up on the boy’s shoulder. I realize that it’s Everett carrying me and I mumble into his ear.
    “Put me down, Everett.”
He looks up at me and lowers me to the ground. “Are you okay? Do you feel dizzy?”
“I’m fine, I’m fine,” I say as I brush his hands off my shoulders.
He puts his hand on my forehead and mumbles something about me being warm. “We’re going to stop in another hour or so. Do you think you can manage until we stop? Then I can fix you up.”
    I nod. “I’m sorry. I know I’ve been a nuisance lately…”
He shakes his head. “No you haven’t. You’re hurt and sick just like I was. Sometimes you just can’t control your body.”
I frown not liking his answer. I am too in control of my body. I walk beside Everett without my bag; he won’t let me carry it. It’s much easier to follow along without carrying the weight of the bag, but I also feel much more useless.
“Everett? How long was I gone?” I’m not sure I want to know the answer, especially after he way he tenses after I ask. I gulp as I wait for him to answer.
    “Four days,” he says.
I blink. I didn’t think it had been that long. I hook my arm through Everett’s and hang onto him. I grind my teeth before saying, “I missed you.”
Everett’s face flushes before he answers. “I missed you too.”
I chew on my lip. “I never thought I’d see you again…”
He looks at me sternly. “Of course you would, Riley. I made sure of that. I was so worried.”
I nod and rub a sore spot on my shoulder. I whisper, “Okay.”
We walk in silence until the sun starts to set. Hook directs us into our jobs for the night. When he doesn’t give me a job, I grabmine and Everett’s bags and set up a spot to sleep. It annoys me that I cannt climb a tree to sleep. I set up my sleeping bag and doze until I feel Everett sit down beside me. I sit up and rub my eyes as Everett passes a bowl of food to me. I eat quickly, scarfing down my food. He gives me a couple of pills to take for my fever after I finish my food.
“How much further do we have to go?”
Everett pulls out a map and stares at it for a minute. “Well we started in Miami and travelled upwards. I think we are about half way to D.C. by now at least. Probably in Georgia somewhere.”
I nod, sighing at how far we still need to go. The lab that we need to get the vaccine from is all the way in D.C. and we have been travelling the whole way on foot.
    It’s a long walk.
“We’re going to hit a town tomorrow,” he says.
I perk up a little. “Really? Is it big? Are we staying there? Do you think there are other people there? I sure hope not…”
He chuckles. “I’m sure there won’t be anyone there. We aren’t staying, but Hook wants to search for supplies.”
I nod excitedly. “Maybe we could find a car or a bus! How awesome would that be?!”
“Pretty awesome. How awesome would it be to find some better food than beans and rice?”
I laugh. “Now that would be something.”
He grins. “Like chocolate cake and ice cream.”
I groan in wanting. “Or spaghetti and meatballs or chicken parmesan.”
Everett licks his lips. “You’re making me hungry.”
I laugh and rest my head on his shoulder. “When we go home the second we get in the door I’ll make us some.”
Everett sighs and wraps an arm around my shoulders. “Sounds like a great plan, Riley.”

    Creepers
    Chapter 13
I open my eyes to Everett gently shaking me awake. I groan and turn onto my stomach.
“Ten more minutes…” I moan and try to go back to sleep.
“Well we’re leaving in twenty, Riley, so you better be ready by then.” I hear him get up and start to pack up his things.
I lie around counting the aches and pains I feel today. The pain has numbed to a dull ache, but I still feel sharp pains in my ribs when I move too sharply. I decide to get up and get ready. I lace my boots up nice and tight and gather my things messily, shoving them into my bag. I zip up my jacket all the way to my neck and rewrap my broken fingers tightly before grabbing my gun. I’m still able to hold it fairly easily. Everyone is getting ready to leave, so I hoist my bag onto my back. I cringe slightly, the weight on my back hurting my burns, but I readjust and walk off with everyone else.
As we walk I never realized how much energy you expend lugging a bag with you and trying to walk over the unstable terrain. After just a couple of hours Everett is practically pulling me alongside him with me stumbling over every possible obstacle. He stops me for a second.
    “Give me your bag.”
I shake my head. I can handle it myself. Even Everett could after his accident with the zombies.
“Come on Riley. You’re struggling to keep up. Just give it to me and I’ll carry it for you.”
“No way. I can do it myself.” I smooth back my hair and stomp off ahead of him.
The truth is that it really is weighing me down and the straps are starting to rub my burned shoulders raw, but I’m not going to give into the pain. I am not a fragile doll that everyone needs to look after, especially not Everett. I trudge through the woods until we come to a stop by a stream.
I throw my bag off my shoulders and lie on the ground breathing deeply. Everett sits down beside me, but I give him a look, get up, and walk over to the stream. I unzip my jacket, exposing my bare shoulders to the cool air and splash some of the cold water on my burns. My back has deep red marks from the backpack straps. I think the red really compliments the purple and green bruises on my chest and stomach. I put my jacket back on and start to get the chills. I have a headache so I make sure to drink plenty of water. I sit with my head between my knees, trying to wait out the nausea I’m feeling. Just as I am standing up, another wave of nausea hits me and I run behind a tree, spilling my lunch. I wipe my mouth and hold my stomach as I walk back over to the stream.
Everett is by my side and he presses his hand to my forehead. “You seem warm.”
I shake my head. “I-I’m fine.” My voice shakes and so does the rest of my body. I feel dizzy and sway slightly, collapsing into Everett’s arms. “Can we take a break?” I mutter before passing out.

    Chapter 12
I hear the soft humming again and it brings me back to reality. I keep my eyes closed and listen to Everett humming as he strokes my hair. We are just as we were when he had gotten sick, except that our roles are now reversed; my head in his lap and him looking over me. I open my eyes and blink a couple times, looking up at Everett, the moon casting a shadow on his face.
He looks at me and breathes, “Riley...” He looks absolutely relieved to see me awake.
“Hi to you too, Everett.” My voice is hoarse, but I managed a smile.
He looks like he wants to hug me tightly, but I think he is afraid I will break. My breathing is slightly more shallow than usual from my ribs. Someone set my fingers and put them into splints. I’m not sure if anyone has seen what is left of my skin under my shirt between the burns and the shredded skin from the whip, but any time I shift, my face contorts in pain.
Everett notices right away and he tries to put me in a position most comfortable for me. “I’m so glad to see you,” he says, smiling ear to ear.
“I didn’t think I was coming back,” I whisper to him, my eyes getting wet when I think about how I may have never seen Everett again, but here he is right in front of me.
“I could never let that happen, Riley. I was so worried about you. I-I thought we weren’t going to get you back. In that house you looked like you were part of the living dead.”
I roll my eyes. “I feel like I’m part of the living dead.”
He gulps. “What did they do to you, Riley?” He caresses my cheek, his touch light and soft.
I bite my lip and feel tears run down my face. They scared the shït out of me that’s what they did. Living people working for the zombies! Who ever heard of such a thing? Are there others like them out there that are helping the creepers?
Everett wipes my tears away. “I’m sorry. You don’t have to tell me.”
I nod and shift so that my head is buried in his jacket and I start to cry. I feel Everett’s arms around me, his touch barely there, so gentle that I almost don’t feel him, but I know that he’s there. I sob into his jacket. So many feeling are consuming me; anger, sadness, pain, confusion and I can’t do anything about them. I can’t move; I can’t walk it off. I can only lie where I am and cry, so that is what I do.
Everett strokes my shoulder, but I only cry more in pain. Everett seems to realize this and he pulls down my shirt slightly to see. He gawks a little at my bright red angry skin, which is starting to scab and peel. He lets go and lifts my shirt from the bottom to look at the welts and heated flesh of my stomach. He lays a cool hand over the welts and I sigh, holding his hand there with mine.
Everett reaches for his bag with his other hand and takes out the first aid kit. He takes out a tube of medicine that hasn’t ever been opened, squirts out some of the liquid inside and rubs it over the welts on my stomach. I sigh in relief, the medicine seemingly drawing the heat right from the welts. As much as it feels good, I know we should probably save the medicine for something more important than me.
“Everett, just put it away. I’m fine.”
“Are you kidding, Riley? You’re in pain. Anyone can see that.”
    So he can tell?
“I really am fine. You don’t need to waste that medicine on me.”
“It’s not wasting it if you need it! Have you seen yourself, Riley? You’re lucky your skin hasn’t all flaked off. You need to use this if you want it to heal.”
I nod. “Only a little more though, okay?”
He nods and rubs more my stomach and chest. I sigh with relief and it feels a little easier to breathe now. “Is your back like that too?”
I shake my head, which is technically not a lie. It does not have blisters on it; it is only singed from the burns.
He gives me a look and carefully rolls me onto my stomach, knowing that I am lying. He lifts the back of my shirt and I hear him gasp. “Are… Are these burns?”
I nod and let out a short groan when he touches me. He puts more of the medicine on my back and I whimper as he rubs my back, the meds helping, but the skin on my back is still very delicate. When he is done he sits me up, careful not to disturb my injuries, and hugs me as tightly as he dares.
I smile and hug him tight, sniffling. It feels good to know Everett is always here for me.

    Creepers
    Chapter 11
I wake again, still attached to the metal table. I must have been out for a while because when I look around the room no one is nearby. I shift slightly and a wave of heat courses down my back and I cry out. The whole back of my body is burned severely, some of the skin flaking off as I move. I let out a choking sound and start crying. It burns so badly and there is no release. The metal is cool against it but I barely feel it, my nerves probably damaged against the heat.
I let the tears roll down my face freely. I don’t care if they see me like this; I want them to feel bad. As I think this, the door opens and the boy walks in with some ice and a towel. He walks over silently and wipes away some of my tears quickly with the towel, then pours the ice onto the table. I stop crying and whimpering and watch him. He arranges the ice so it is touching most of my burns. I let out a quiet sigh; the ice feels soothing on my back.
“Thank you,” I whisper under my breath.
He nods to me. “Listen you need to tell us your plans. My uncle is not going to just let you get away with this. He’s going to keep doing it until you tell.”
“Why? Why are you guys trying to stop us? Don’t you want to stop them too?”
He sighs. “Of course we do, but the zombies aren’t as dumb as you think. We were able to somewhat ward them off with information. They know that you are trying to stop them from spreading. There are many of them around here and if we give them information then they won’t kill us, but don’t think that because we need information my uncle won’t kill you because he will.”
    I gulp. “I can’t give any information. I really can’t.”
“Well if you want to live then you will.”
With that he leaves the room and I am left to my thoughts. I try not to think too much about my possible death. Instead I think about Everett and how worried he must be. We haven’t been away from each other this long since the apocalypse started. He always has my back and now I’m not there to have his. It must have been at least one day so far and I worry that I may never be able to get back to him or the rest of the group.
Imust have fallen asleep because the next thing I know I wake in the quiet room. I grunt in pain and don’t try to fight it. The skin on my back burns and my stomach is blistered from the heat. I’ve given up any hope I had left; I know I cannot escape on my own.
I do not let myself cry though and I am glad of my decision because the boy has just walked into the room. I cringe away from him when he comes close to me. He eyes me and raises an eyebrow.
I just keep my mouth shut.
He takes my hand in his and I scrunch my eyebrows together. Why would he give off any sign of sympathy for me? He gives me a half smile before twisting my finger back harshly. I feel it snap and I cry out shrilly. I look at my finger, bent at an awkward angle and cry.
“Please,” I whisper, my voice too worn out to talk.
“Please what?” He asks. There’s a knowing tone in his voice.
I cry out. “Please stop doing that!”
He scrunches his eyebrows. “You mean this?” He takes another finger in his hand and snaps it back.
I choke on my cry and let out an inhuman groan. “Let me go, please… Please!”
The boy brushes back my hair from my eyes. “Just tell us the information.”
When I shake my head he snaps another finger and I burst into tears like a little girl. “I can’t tell you! I can’t, I’m sorry! Just stop, please!”
Tears are running down my face, my fingers lie limply on the table. The boy actually gives me what seems like a sorrowful look. He punches me in my ribs and I let out a gasp of breath. He gives me a second to gain my air back before punching again in the same spot. I cough and gasp as he does it again and I feel one of my ribs shift. He punches again, harder this time and I feel it crack. I scream and pull against the restraints.
The boy goes to my other hand and I am sobbing now, fighting to stay conscience through the pain. He uncurls my fist and takes my finger in his hand.
I let out a low moan and groan, “No….”
I feel his grip on my finger tighten just before the door bangs open loudly. I glance over and watch as a bunch of guys storm into the room holding guns. I feel dizzy, but I make out a couple familiar faces in the group. They back the boy up into the corner of the room and tie him up.
I feel someone cutting away at my bonds and as soon as they’re done they carefully lift me into their arms. I whimper in pain and let silent tears runs down my face. They bundle me up in a jacket a couple sizes too big and we leave the room. My hand lies limp across my body and my back burns from so much movement. I know we are outside when the cool air hits me. I am in too much agony for my eyes to focus and the pain makes me dizzy.
I close my eyes and feel the steady beat of everyone marching. Just as I fall asleep I hear a faint humming and I know I am safe in Everett’s arms.

    Chapter 10
When I wake I am tied down to a metal table by my wrists and ankles. The table is suspended by metal chains which seem to be able to be cranked up or down. I grunt and pull against the ropes, but it’s no use. The boy walks into the room along with an older man. I stare at them.
“This is your last chance to tell us what your plans are,” the man speaks gruffly.
I shake my head, not trusting myself to speak.
The boy sighs and shakes his head at me, like he doesn’t want to do what he is about to do. I gulp as he approaches me. He presses a button on the table and I am lowered into a pool of water that was set up beneath the table I am on. I gasp and strain my neck to keep my head above water. The old man presses a button and I scream in pain. The button sends a shock through the water which is magnified through the water
The boy stares at me. “Tell us.”
“No,” I croak out, my voice still hoarse from screaming the night before.
The man presses the button for a longer time and I scream in agony as the electricity runs through me. I catch my breath before they do it again and again and again. I scream and cry, pulling against the ropes to free myself, but I make sure to keep my mouth shut about the plans. After an hour of this, my mind feels dull and I only whimper when they shock me.
I think they realize I’ll never talk like this so they press a different button and I am lifted from the water.
“Are you going to talk now or what?”
I glare at the kid and shake my head.
He sighs and presses a button on the table. I lay, waiting for something to happen, when I feel warmth on my back. It feels like a nice glow at first, but then it starts to heat up. I arch my back as much as possible to keep it from touching the metal, but the boy pushes on my stomach to keep me firmly against the table. It is starting to burn now and I squirm, trying to get away. I feel the back of my shirt starting to singe and when my bare skin touches the table I yelp. I gasp as the heat overwhelms me. It’s hard to breathe and I gasp in short breaths. I scream out and burst in tears.
“Let me go, please! It hurts!” I cry hard as the boy pushes me firmer onto the table.
“Tell us what we want to know and it can all be over soon.”
I cry and shake my head, knowing I can’t do that. The burning get worse, feeling like the skin is burning right off. I groan and whine, pulling against the ropes. I scream profanities at them and cry until I pass out from the pain.

    Chapter 9
It is afternoon when we finally stop walking to take a break in a clearing. My feet are sore and I’m so tired I feel like a zombie myself. I yawn and stretch for what feels like forever. I glance at Everett whose is lying on the ground, eyes closed, and breathing deeply. He had a bit of a rough time walking for so long, but I made sure I pulled him along so he wouldn’t seem weak to the others.
I walk around a bit, stretching out my limbs as I do so. I roll my eyes after a few minutes of boredom and decide to walk around a bit through the woods to try and find an indication of where we are. I take my gun off my shoulder where I had rested it and walk down a path. I should have about a half hour before everyone starts moving again.
As I walk I keep getting shivers up my spine, but whenever I look around I see nothing. I stop and stand still, taking in a deep breath of air slowly. I let it out and as I am about to take another breath I hear something loud drop to the ground behind me. I start to turn around, but a hand clamps over my mouth and a needle is jabbed into my neck. I feel the liquid of whatever was inside the needle course through my veins. I thrash around, trying to get away before I feel all my limbs go numb and I crumple to the ground. The last thing I remember is a boy’s face above me.
    ***
I wake up groggily and moan. My head is pounding and my body aches from the mystery liquid. I look around the room I am in and see it is a wooden cabin. I feel a mattress underneath me and that is when I realize I am restrained by ropes. Panic rises over me and I pull at the restraints. I groan out in aggravation when I realize it’s no use. I lie there for what seems like hours, but was probably only a couple of minutes, staring at the ceiling until I hear the door open. I cringe and look towards the door, planning for the worst, but I only see a boy leaning on the frame of the door. He wears a smirk on his face and puffs out his chest slightly, like he is the most triumphant person ever.
I pull against the ropes slightly. “So… Are you going to let me go? Good joke, but I really have to get back to my friends now.”
He lets out a low laugh. “Nah. At least not yet”
“Well when? I need to leave now. Where am I? Who are you? And why am I restrained? I didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Yeah, you did.” He watches me from the doorway.
I bang my head against the mattress. “Then what did I do wrong exactly?”
“Well first of all you went into the woods alone. That was a stupid thing to do. Secondly, you are conspiring against the zombies and I can’t let you do that.”
I’m pretty sure my jaw drops to the floor. “But you’re not a zombie! Why are you helping them? What is wrong with you?” My voice gets louder and louder until I’m shouting at him.
He shrugs. “I do what I have to, to survive.” With that he leaves, closing the door behind him.
I scream, pulling against the ropes and struggling to think straight. “Let me go!” I scream and tears start falling down my face. I keep screaming until my voice turns hoarse and after that I am left to a quiet sob. I just want to get back to the others. They must be wondering where I am by now. I don’t even know what time or day it is. It could have been hours or days, I’m not sure. I calm myself down enough to stop crying, the tears drying and sticking to my face. I think I fall asleep after that because the next thing I remember is the boy shaking me awake.
I open my eyes, hoping to see one of my group members, but when I see him I just frown. “What?”
“Tell me what your plans were against the zombies.”
I look at him, stunned and then start laughing. “Why would I tell you that kind of information?”
“Because you either tell me now or I make you wish you would’ve told me now.”
I stop laughing at that last part he said and glare at him. “I’m not telling you anything.”
“Suit yourself.” With that he jabs a needle into my neck and I pass out.

    Creepers
    Chapter 8
Once all our things are packed up, the sun is just starting to peak over the trees. I grab my gun and load it as we walk away from the campsite. Today Everett and I are in the middle of the group because of Everett’s injuries. I get a couple shoves and winks from the others, but I just roll my eyes and act like I don’t know what’s going on.
We talk in hushed voices as we make our way through the woods. We are just cutting ourselves a path through the dense brush when I feel something heavy hit my head. I stumble forward a step and look at the ground where the thing had landed… It’s a bloody arm…
I look up to see at least three dozen creepers up in the trees. Some are chewing on human remains and it seems as if one has accidently dropped an arm on me. I am at a loss for words so I just shake the guy in front of me until he sees the creepers.
I’m not sure if the creepers jump first or if we start shooting first, but soon enough there are a mix between zombie and human clawing at each other. I get to the outskirts of the fight and start shooting at creepers. I hear a twig snap behind me and before I know it, I’m pinned to the ground by a creeper. Its foul stench roams through my nose as it screams in my face, its jaw unhinging on the left side. I scream and try to break its hold on me. Just as it is about to rip my guts out, someone blows its brains out and its body falls on top of me. I shove it off and see Everett giving a slight huff before turning around to shoot more.
I grab my gun off the ground and shoot the couple that are by me. Soon the last creeper falls to the ground, dead. I drop my gun and run over to one of the guys in our group, John, lying on the ground. He is gasping like a fish out of water, a pool of blood starting to flood the floor beneath him.
I gawk at the sight, but try to keep my composure. “John? John, can you hear me? Hey, you’re gunna be okay man.”
His eyes lock on mine and I take his hand, repeating my words. “It’s going to be okay. You’ll be fine…”
Hook comes up behind me, holding his gun. We all know what’s going to happen. Any dead person is the perfect target for the creeper infection. The only way to stop this from happening is to shoot them, like we would any creeper.
John’s eyes lock on the barrel of the gun. “Do it,” he croaks out.
Hook aims the gun at John’s head and I feel John’s grip on my hand tighten. I close my eyes and hear the gun shot go off. The grip on my hand slackens, but I can’t let go. My eyes stay closed, but I can here everyone starting to walk away to gather there things. It happened so fast I can’t believe it. John was actually not too bad of a guy. I’d say we were pretty close friends. He was one of the first people I met when Everett and I stumbled upon the group. He made us feel welcome and he was a wiseass, funny, but a wiseass. I laughed at all of his jokes.
It feels like forever, but I feel an arm around my shoulder. A hand carefully undoes the death grip I have on John’s hand and picks me up on my feet. They lead me away from John’s body, my eyes still closed. I’m too scared to open them with the possibility of seeing John’s now mangled body. They lead me a couple yards away and hug me in a tight embrace. I now immediately know this could only be Everett and I open my eyes. He pulls back for a second to check my facial expressions. He can read me like a book. When he sees my eyes getting watery he hugs me tightly again. I ball my hands into fists and bang them on Everett’s chest while crying into his shoulder.
He rubs my back, still in the hug, “It’s okay Riley. I know, I know… It’s okay…”
I sob loudly into his chest and hug him tightly, my arms around his waist.
“Come on, Riley, calm down.” He pulls away from me and wipes my eyes with a tissue he pulled from his pocket. “We have to keep going, okay? We can’t waste any more time here.”
I sniffle and nod, wiping my nose with my sleeve. I feel Everett give me another tight squeeze before taking my hand and leading me towards everyone else. When I look at everyone’s faces they look a bit like mine. I can tell some of them have been crying.
Everyone reluctantly grabs there things, someone hands me my gun that I had dropped. We all get back into formation and continue our trek solemnly.
