---------------

A loud beeping noise filled the kitchen, followed by coughing, I rushed downstairs, smoke filled the kitchen. A tan hand was waving a cloth back and forth by the smoke detector trying to turn it off. I tried to hide my coughs but I couldn’t there was too much smoke. I could see his cheeks turning pink as he looked down at his combat boots. I walked over to him and kissed his cheek, hopped up onto the counter and pulled the batteries out of the smoke detector. His brown eyes met mine.

“Surprise,” His voice was as low as I had remembered, and as scruffy as my grand fathers. He tried to laugh, but embarrassment covered his face. “I wanted to do something special for your birthday Lilly, something you wouldn’t forget, considering you’re 16 now.” His voice trailed of as our eyes met once more, I smiled like an idiot. He was as gorgeous as I remembered him, maybe even a little bit more. The amount of muscle had definitely increased since he left to go into the service.

“I could never forget this Will, you’re home!” I hugged him, the world seemed to slow down for those short few seconds when our arms were around each other. “And, you were making me breakfast, I don’t know anyone who would do that when they first got home.” I grinned up at him.

His chest rumbled as he laughed, he took several graceful strides over to the fridge and pulled out a jug of milk. Confused, I popped up on the counter and continued to watch. “I’m going to make you breakfast, just like I’d planned. Only this time, it’s going to be something I know I can’t burn.” He turned around and handed me a bowl of cereal. We laughed in unison.

“How’d you get in here anyway?” I raised an eyebrow.
“I figured you’d hide the spare key on the backside of the horseshoe by the door.”
“You know me well,” we laughed as we shoved more cereal in our mouths. “I’m glad you’re back, I’ve missed you terribly” I looked down at my feet dangling off the sideboard.
“I’ve missed you too princess.” He kissed my forehead, then took a step back. Looking around like something was missing. “Where’s your dad?”

I could feel my eyes start to water.
