/chapter four/

It was only nine and there were already kids throwing up in the sand due to alcohol - I assumed.
I was never a really big drinker, especially after what happened when I was younger.
My sister had been a party animal, and to my family's dismay, a drunk driver.
She died in a car accident when I was young, and I didn't really know her.
But seeing all of these drunk kids had already put a damper on the night for me.
I took off my shoes since I didn't want to ruin them in the sand and carried them around with me.
Gia dragged me all kinds of places introducing me to all of her friends.
A few guys asked me for my number, and I gave it to them, however with no intentions of ever talking to them again.
Preston was still stuck in my mind.
How ironic, I thought, as he stumbled onto the beach.
"Hi, Preston!" I said, walking over to him.
"Hi." He shoved his hands into his pockets and looked down at the sand.
"You decided to come?" I asked trying to keep the conversation going.
"My mom made me." He clearly seemed like he didn't want to have a conversation, but I pressed on anyway.
"Oh. Well, I'm glad you're here."
Ohmygosh, Denni, what's wrong with you. Why would you say that.
I mentally slapped myself in the face.
His brown eyes snapped up at me, so I immediately looked down at my feet, which wiggled in the sand.
"Look. We're not friends. I don't know you, and you don't know me. So why don't I just go and get a beer and you leave me the hell alone. Then, when we go home, I'll tell my mom what a nice girl you are and that we had a blast. Sound like a plan? Great, now leave me alone and walk away."
"Uh, o-okay," I stuttered.
How could one individual be so rude? I didn't do anything to be mean to him, and he was already yelling at me? Was it so wrong to try and make small talk?
I brushed it off and went to get a cup of coke off of the table on the street.
"You might not want to drink that, it probably has alcohol in it," a deep male voice said lightly touching my arm.
I looked up to see a stunning brunette with and amazing upperbody.
His electric green eyes stared at me and his lips curled into a smile.
I smiled as I put down the cup of mixed drinks.
"Thanks for the warning, I'm not a drinker," I said as I yanked up my jeans a little bit.
I felt a hot blush creep up the back of my neck, as I'm sure my cheeks turned pink, too.
"Neither am I, I'm Jesse, by the way."
"Denni," I said, twirling a piece of my hair.
