    /chapter eight/
    I heard footsteps thumping on the wood floor of my new room as I opened my eyes.
    I sat up in my bed and rubbed my eyes which were a blur.
    I immediately recognized the shaggy blonde hair - Preston.
    "Did you just wake up or something?" He said crinkling his nose.
    "Yeah. What time is it?"
    "Like, twelve in the afternoon."
    "Wow, I must have been tired, I never sleep this late."
    "Whatever. Do you want to hang out today? My mom made me ask."
    He shifted uncomfortably in the doorway.
    "Uh, sure... what do you have in mind?" I asked, stepping onto the floor.
    "I figured I'd take you to the aquarium since my mom volunteers there for the summer."
    "Okay, give me a few minutes to get dressed."
    "Kay. Wear a bathing suit or whatever."
    I threw on a bikini and sofee shorts and a tank and went downstairs to where he waited for me.
    I got in his small, hunter-green car and choked on the smell of cigarette smoke.
    "You smoke?" I asked, opening the window for fresh air.
    "It's none of your business," he growled.
    "You know, if you're gonna be so snippy with me, why did you even ask me to hang out?"
    "Would you just shut up and enjoy the day for Christ's sake?"
    "Sheesh, no need to be so mean, you don't even know me."
    And with that, I made one awkward car ride, ten times more awkward.
    When we finally got to the aquarium, we met up with his mom.
    "Oh sweetie, you look gorgeous," she said cupping my face and squishing my cheeks together.
    I smiled, probably looking like an obese twelve-year-old with a wrinkly face.
    She finally released my face, which felt firm from being held so long.
    "Come with me," she said motioning to where the scuba divers go into the tank and feed the fish.
    "What are we doing up here?"
    "Shut up," he said rolling his head back, obviously annoyed.
    His mom led us to a station with wet suits and grabbed an extra small for me and a large for him.
    "I thought we were just going to look at the fish through the glass?" I said as Karen zipped up my suit.
    I could feel Preston's eyes glued to me as I examined his facial features.
    I couldn't quite tell what he thought of when he looked at me.
    Oh wait yes I can - disgust.
    "Well, Preston mentioned that you guys were going to scuba dive and swim with Bart and Buddy," she said looking a little confused.
    "Who are Bart and Buddy?" I asked looking at Karen.
    "They're the two dolphins in the tank!" She said as they swam over.
    "Scuba dive and swim with dolphins!? I've always wanted to do this! This is like, the best day ever!!" I said, my face lighting up with excitement.
    And for the first time, Preston's eyes weren't filled with hate, and I swear I saw his lips twist into a small smile.

    "Let's go shopping, I need to get my mind off of things," Gia said as I rung my hair out on the sand.
    "Should we go home and get changed first?" I asked as I scrambled to get my things.
    "Yeah, but we should go now, because I need to do a lot of shopping," she said emphasizing the words "a lot" and "shopping."
    I really don't get how this girl can go shopping so often, she barely does anything else!
    When we got to the mall, my hair had finally dried and I didn't look like a wet puppy anymore.
    "You know, now that you're starting to get tanner, you look like Megan Fox."
    "Who's that?"
    "What!? You don't know who Megan Fox is!?" Her eyes widened with disbelief, as she threw a manicured finger over her mouth.
    "I've never owned a TV before..."
    "Well, she's like the most beautiful girl in the world, everyone's girl crush."
    "Thanks," I smiled slightly, not knowing how to take that in.
    "Do you like froyo?" She asked as we stopped in front of a colorful store.
    "Froyo? What's that?"
    "It's like ice cream, but healthier. Gosh you're so cute, you're like from Mars, or something," she said giggling.
    I followed her into the store as I recognized a familiar face behind the cashier.
    Jesse.
    His green eyes flickered up at me and his lips twisted into a smile when he recognized me.
    "Denni! Hi!" He said waving as I walked over.
    "Hey!"
    "I was just about to go on break, do you wanna sit and talk?"
    "Well, I'll let you two talk, I'll get my yogurt and get out of here. I'll buy you cute clothes if I come across any... what size are you again Den?" Gia said.
    "Extra small - small, thanks! Come by here to get me when you're ready to leave?"
    "Of course!" Gia said winking at me and walking out.
    "So, how do you know her?" Jesse said once she left.
    "Well, I moved in with my godmother, who's her aunt."
    He nodded as a perky blonde stepped out of the back room.
    "Jesse, where's mom's birthday present? I left it right here on the shelf so that when the shift was over, we don't have to go buy one!"
    "Oh, wait, who's this? Your new girlfriendddd?" She sing-songed.
    "I'm Denni," I said smiling up at her.
    She was at least 5'8, and I was 5'2.
    Her electric blue eyes were surrounded by layers and layers of coated lashes and her face glowed.
    "I'm Eliza, nice to meet you!"
    We sat and talked and it turns out, we're exactly alike.
    She even called me her new best friend, which I've never had one of those before.
    I think I'm starting to like it here in North Carolina.
    Note:
    so, i decided i'm going to try and write every other weekday and not on the weekends, and sorry for my lack of posting, i have all kinds of tests and quizzes before break!

    /chapter six/part two/Preston's POV
    "You know, she seems like a very put-together young lady," I heard my mother's voice bounce off of the walls in the kitchen, as I stumbled down the stairs.
    I rubbed my eyes since I just woke up five minutes ago, but I didn't walk into the kitchen, she was clearly talking to someone.
    "Yeah, I'm surpised," another female said, "considering her parents died, she's been very... normal almost."
    "Wow, she's a very strong young woman, you got lucky, Palmer."
    "I know. And also, her sister died a while back, I'm all she has, now."
    "So sad, she's so young," my mother said softly.
    I was trying to figure out who they were talking about, Gia maybe?
    "Look what I found on her dresser this morning when the girls went to the beach. She made a bucket list of things she wanted to accomplish before her time is up. She even titled it, Things I'll Never Get To Do. Poor girl, I wish there was a way I could help her do all of it, without making her feel uncomfortable," Palmer said quietly.
    "Well, if it ever comes up, tell Denni that she can talk to me, I lost my mother and father last year." So they were talking about Denni?
    But she doesn't seem like she just went through a traumatic loss at all.
    I heard the side door from the kitchen shut, and my mother get up from the table.
    I stumbled in, pretending like I just woke up, and waved at my mom.
    "Would you like to go out and get some breakfast, dear?" My mom asked sweetly.
    "Sure," I grumbled as she went upstairs to change.
    I noticed that the notebook was still on the counter, Palmer must have forgotten it.
    I quickly copied down all twenty things on the list and shut the notebook.
    I wasn't doing something nice, just writing stuff down.
    No, I'm not about to get all soft because this girl lost her parents.
    Nope, not me. I'd rather be caught dead than do something nice like this for someone.
    I, Preston White, refuse to be nice to Denni.

    /chapter six/part one/
    "Don't you just hate guys?" Gia said at a red light through her tears.
    "Yeah, they're the worst," I lied.
    I'd never been with anyone, never had a boyfriend, never been kissed, never loved.
    I never wanted to be with anyone who didn't love me the way my father loved my mother.
    They set the expectation pretty high, like the chick flicks.
    The rest of the car ride was quiet, if you ignored Gia's sobs.
    I felt bad, she kept saying how she had never done things because her boyfriend would hold her back, and how she regretted it.
    Which got me thinking, I never want to be held back from things.
    And then I kept thinking about how I've never done some things that people do in their every day lives.
    So, when we got back to the house, I decided to make a bucket list for myself.
    1. Learn to scuba dive
    2. Swim with the dolphins
    3. Go up in a hot air balloon
    4. Go to Fiji
    5. Ride a jet ski
    6. Stargaze on a golf course at night
    7. Ride my first roller coaster
    8. Rope swinging into a lake
    9. Sleep in a tent
    10. Learn to surf
    11. Go night swimming at the beach
    12. Have a bonfire
    13. Have a paint war
    14. Sneak out at least once
    15. Lay in the middle of the road at night
    16. Carve my name into a tree
    17. Get up early to see the sunrise
    18. Swim under a waterfall
    19. Be kissed on top of the Ferris wheel
    20. Make every day count
    Okay, so my list was totally cheesy. But it was things that everyone else does in their life that I wish I could do but never had the chance to.
    So I wrote it in a little notebook, and left it on my dresser.
    Note:
    i had to split it into two parts because the list was so long, part two will be up shortly

    /chapter four/
    It was only nine and there were already kids throwing up in the sand due to alcohol - I assumed.
    I was never a really big drinker, especially after what happened when I was younger.
    My sister had been a party animal, and to my family's dismay, a drunk driver.
    She died in a car accident when I was young, and I didn't really know her.
    But seeing all of these drunk kids had already put a damper on the night for me.
    I took off my shoes since I didn't want to ruin them in the sand and carried them around with me.
    Gia dragged me all kinds of places introducing me to all of her friends.
    A few guys asked me for my number, and I gave it to them, however with no intentions of ever talking to them again.
    Preston was still stuck in my mind.
    How ironic, I thought, as he stumbled onto the beach.
    "Hi, Preston!" I said, walking over to him.
    "Hi." He shoved his hands into his pockets and looked down at the sand.
    "You decided to come?" I asked trying to keep the conversation going.
    "My mom made me." He clearly seemed like he didn't want to have a conversation, but I pressed on anyway.
    "Oh. Well, I'm glad you're here."
    Ohmygosh, Denni, what's wrong with you. Why would you say that.
    I mentally slapped myself in the face.
    His brown eyes snapped up at me, so I immediately looked down at my feet, which wiggled in the sand.
    "Look. We're not friends. I don't know you, and you don't know me. So why don't I just go and get a beer and you leave me the hell alone. Then, when we go home, I'll tell my mom what a nice girl you are and that we had a blast. Sound like a plan? Great, now leave me alone and walk away."
    "Uh, o-okay," I stuttered.
    How could one individual be so rude? I didn't do anything to be mean to him, and he was already yelling at me? Was it so wrong to try and make small talk?
    I brushed it off and went to get a cup of coke off of the table on the street.
    "You might not want to drink that, it probably has alcohol in it," a deep male voice said lightly touching my arm.
    I looked up to see a stunning brunette with and amazing upperbody.
    His electric green eyes stared at me and his lips curled into a smile.
    I smiled as I put down the cup of mixed drinks.
    "Thanks for the warning, I'm not a drinker," I said as I yanked up my jeans a little bit.
    I felt a hot blush creep up the back of my neck, as I'm sure my cheeks turned pink, too.
    "Neither am I, I'm Jesse, by the way."
    "Denni," I said, twirling a piece of my hair.

    I sat at the foot of my bed as Gia picked out some of my new clothes to wear tonight.
    Tonight is the kick-off-to-summer beach party that's apparently 'mandatory' for me to go to or something.
    She basically treated me like her little doll as she dressed me and pinned a bow in my hair.
    I had to wear a belt because my clothes are still a little big because of how small I am.
    "Perf," she dabbed a little gloss onto her lips and fluffed her hair as I fumbled to put wedges on.
    "Hey girls?" Palmer screamed up the stairs.
    "Yeah?" Gia shouted back.
    "Could you run these cookies over to the house next door? We have new neighbors!"
    "Can you do it, I still have a few things left to do?" Gia said sweetly.
    "Sure, no problem," I said just before I trotted down the stairs and recieved the tupperware full of sugar cookies.
    I rang the doorbell, only to find the boy I saw earlier on my way to get the groceries.
    His white-blonde surfer-like hair and soft brown eyes mesmerized me.
    We made brief eye contact before his mother glided next to him.
    "Preston, who is this?" She asked smiling at me.
    "I dunno," he mumbled.
    "I'm Denni Rivers. These cookies are a welcome present from my godmother, Palmer. She lives in the house just over there," I said motioning to the castle of a house.
    "What a lovely woman, I'd love to meet her!" She exclaimed.
    "Hun, you look awful dressed up and beautiful, would it be out of place for me to ask where you're going?" She asked looking me up and down.
    "Uh, this beach party thing, I dunno, my friend is making me go with her. I just moved here today."
    "Oh, how wonderful. Preston you should go!"
    He mumbled something I didn't understand, and his mother rolled her eyes at him.
    "Oh! I forgot to introduce myself! I'm Karen, Karen White." She extended her hand out to shake my hand, and I smiled back at her.
    "Well, I should get going, I think I'm leaving soon. Nice to meet you both," I smiled politely as I walked back towards my new house.
    Even on the way to the beach party, I couldn't get Preston out of my head.
    I kept picturing him standing in front of me, he's gorgeous.
    Soon I was snapped out of my fantasy as Gia tapped my arm and motioned at the beach entrance.
    There was all sorts of music blasting that you would only hear on the radio, stuff that I don't listen to.
    There were clusters of teens scattered on the humungous beach.
    The only thing I was unaware of, was how insane this party was about to get...

    I could have puked at how much Gia spent on me in Hollister after the amount she spent on me in practically every other store in the mall.
    "Hmm, you're naturally pretty, so I don't wanna make you start wearing makeup. How about just a little mascara to make your eyes pop?" She scanned for the perfect makeup counter.
    I agreed with everything she said because she knows what's popular here, and I just wanna fit in.
    She bought my mascara and her makeup and we got back in her car to go home.
    "You're really quiet, you know that?" Gia said, examining my face at a red light.
    "Uh, I guess," I said, playing with my nails.
    "I know exactly what you need, spa day!" She squealed as she made a sharp u-turn.
    I'm not one to be very girly, mostly because I could never afford it. But, I guess I could change, right?
    ~~~
    I examined my manicured nails and feet as I opened the door to my balcony.
    It's so crazy how I went from not having anything to living in this lavish palace of a home.
    I stood on the balcony and looked at how peaceful the beach in the backyard was.
    I spotted Gia and a few friends in the pool underneath my balcony.
    "Hey, Denni! Come down here, I want you to meet some people!" Gia shouted up at me.
    On my way down, it occured to me that maybe Gia actually likes me.
    "Hi," I said shyly, waving my hand.
    "Denni, these are my best friends, Kate and Bree."
    "You're so fricken pretty! Your skin is perfect, what makeup do you use!?" Kate said in amusement.
    "She doesn't use any!" Gia said as if it was hard to believe.
    Bree stared me up and down, and boy did I feel uncomfortable.
    "Can we go now?" Bree said snottily.
    "Sure," Gia said, "Denni do you wanna come tanning with us at the salon?"
    "No thanks, I'll stay here," I said tucking a piece of loose hair behind my ear.
    "Okay, see you later!" Kate chirped before turning with the other two girls.
    "Hey, Denni, honey?" Palmer said peeking out the back door.
    "Yeah, Palmer?"
    "Could you run and get some groceries for me? I only need a few things!"
    "Of course, but could you just give me directions so I don't get lost?"
    "Sure, dear, you can take the Benz," she said with a wave of her manicured hand.
    "I'll walk there!"
    "You sure?" She screamed to me.
    "Yeah!" She handed me a list and off I went.
    But before I even left the neighborhood of mansions, I saw the most beautiful boy I've ever seen in my life.
    I got those butterflies that I read about in novels, I don't even know how else to describe it.
    I ripped off yet another layer of shirts that I had on to keep me warm during my flight.
    It had to be at least 100 degrees here in North Carolina.
    Okay, maybe not 100, maybe I’m exaggerating.
    But still, its much hotter here than in Colorado.
    I made my way to the baggage claim, following all of the signs.
    I picked up my one suitcase and crossed my carry-on over my neck.
    Looking up, I immediately recognized the glossy blonde hair and shocking green eyes that belonged to my young godmother, Palmer.
    Her eyes bulged when she saw me at baggage claim and ran over to me to give me a bear hug.
    “You look exactly like your mother, Denni!”
    A crystal clear tear escapes her fierce eyes, but she quickly wipes it away.
    "Let's get home, you're probably exhausted, honey."
    I followed her out to her Mercedes Benz and threw my bags in the trunk.
    My family didn't come from any money, in fact we were borderline broke.
    So, when we pulled up to my godmother's mansion, my jaw dropped.
    Literally, my jaw dropped onto the stone stairs that led to the gray stone mansion in front of me.
    "Let me take your bags up to your room, I'll fix you some lunch."
    I followed Palmer to my room, which was bigger than my house back home.
    I unpacked my few belongings and went downstairs, hoping I wouldn't get lost.
    I admired the fine detail to the house and all of the photos on the wall.
    A gorgeous dirty-blonde showed up in at least 75% of the photos, but I'd never seen her before.
    Sure enough, by the time I made it to the kitchen, she was sitting there.
    Primped, pretty and petite.
    Her long, perfectly straight hair scaled down her back and she stared at me with her brown eyes.
    Her glossed lips twisted into a smile as she waved at me with her manicured hands.
    "Hi! I'm Gia! I stay with Aunt Palmer every summer, what's your name?"
    "Denni," I mumbled shyly.
    "Ohmygosh, I love that name!"
    "Thanks."
    Palmer placed a bowl of mac and cheese in front of me, and I picked at it.
    I wasn't really hungry, I just wanted things to go back to normal at home.
    But I knew they never would.
    "Denni, you must be sweating in your jeans! Do you have any shorts?" Palmer asked, pouring me a glass of iced tea.
    "No."
    "O-M-G! Let me take you shopping with me!" Gia squealed hopping out of her seat.
    "Uh,-"
    "Perfect! Denni, why don't you put on some of Gia's clothes on and let her take you to the mall!" Palmer interrupted.
    Gia pulled me by the arm up the stairs and into her pink room.
    I put on some cargo shorts and a tank top, which were both big on me since I only weigh 103 pounds.
    I pulled my curly long brown hair into a ponytail.
    Later I found myself in the passenger seat of Gia's Lexus, regretting getting in the car.
    Chapter Two
    The ocean splashed against the back of my legs, and I felt the sun warming up my golden skin.
    It was a perfect beach day, if you ask me.
    I was with all of my friends: Mel, Whitney, Lex, Sam, Dylan, and Ray.
    3 girls, and 3 guys - and me.
    I walked back over to my towel, and lay on my back to tan my stomach.
    "Oh, uh, Blaire?" Sam says to me, nudging my rib cage.
    "Yeah?" I cupped my hands around my sunglasses so that I could open my eyes.
    "There's someone who wanted to see you, so I told him he could come..."
    I sat up only to see man legs. When I looked up I scanned the body and face I once knew.
    "What the hell you didn't tell me you guys were friends with him now!" I whisper yelled as I hit Sam on the arm.
    "Well, he swims for the community and so do I, so we got close there!" He rubbed his arm and acted like it hurt.
    "Hey, Blaire," he said dryly.
    "Hi, Brad. Could you move, please? You're blocking my sun."
    He put his hands up in defense as I lay back down to tan.
    ***
    "I pick Blaire, Sam aaaand, Brad," Ray said rubbing his hands together.
    I gave him a death glare as he air kissed me.
    "Bite me," I hissed at him when I walked over.
    "So, you just pick up the ball, and throw it or run, got it? It's only two hand touch," Brad instructed.
    "I'm a girl, not an idiot," I fired back.
    "Hey, this isn't fair, it's me and three girls!" Dylan joked and Lex punched him in the stomach.
    "Okay, huddle up," Sam instructed; Brad pulled me in tighter and I pushed myself off of him.
    That's how the whole rest of the game and day went, Brad treating me like I was a loser.
    Well in my defense he didn't change over the summer, which means he didn't get any cuter.
    As we walked off of the beach, I saw Tanner as he was walking onto the beach.
    "Hey, Blaire," he pulled me in for a hug as a smile stretched across his face.
    "Hey, Tanner," I said, gushing.
    "What are you doing later tonight?"
    "Nothing, you?"
    "Nothing. Do you wanna go to the boardwalk with me or something?"
    "Yeah, you have my number?" He nodded and smiled as he walked away.
    "Ooooh, get it Blaireeeee," Ray said once Tanner was out of ear shot.
    I pinched his arm and continued walking home.
    Chapter One
    "Blaire! Honey, we missed you so much!"
    I breathed in the coconut-lime lotion that was lathered on my mother's neck as she embraced me into a tight hug.
    "I missed you all so much, too!" I gave my father a strong hug, and then stared at my two best friends.
    "BMW IS BACK TOGETHER!" Melissa shrieked, as the three of us smothered each other with hugs.
    I missed my friends so much; they basically took the place of my two older sisters when they left for college a few years ago.
    Melissa and Whitney have been there through it all with me, and I missed the helll out of them.
    Even though I was only gone for the summer, I felt lonely without them.
    "We'll take your bags up to your room, you guys go out and catch up - have fun!"
    My mom was out of breath the second she picked up my bags.
    I got in the front seat of Whitney's Jeep Wrangler and we drove into town.
    We pulled up at our favorite restaurant and sat outside.
    "So, how was Pennsylvania?" Melissa said scrunching her face up.
    "Well, since I was with my aunt, not so bad. But it was nothing like Malibu, I can tell you that much."
    I sipped my club soda with lemon and lime, more like gulped.
    "What could I get you ladies to eat?" A teenage guy asked.
    "Ohmygosh, Tanner? Tanner Klein?" Whitney's eyes were bulging out of her head.
    Am I seeing this correctly through my contacts?
    Tanner Klein? How do I describe him...
    Well, he was just as dweeby and ugly as I was when we were younger.
    And he was always in love with me, but I was never interested.
    He got picked on for his looks as well, but boy, was summer good to him.
    He is fricken gorgeous.
    He smiled shyly, showing off his one dimple, which was fricken adorable.
    His green eyes darted over to me and held my gaze, and I tried my best not to drool.
    "And who's this?"
    "You seriously don't remember me!" I said in disbelief. He had to.
    "Of course I do, I'm just playing. How could I forget the girl I asked out every day for two straight years?"
    Well this got really awkward really fast.
    Instead of answering, I just sat there quietly and forced a little smile.
    "So ladies, what'll it be to eat?"
    The girls answered with their orders, but by the time it was my turn, I stammered out a b/s excuse.
    "I ate on the plane, I'm not hungry. Thanks though," I lied right through my pearly whites.
    I am LOVING the feedback I'm getting from you guys, thank you so much. please fav if you read this and liked it/ want me to keep writing (: love all of my followers, comment please xxx
    Prologue
    Hi, my name is Blair Everwood.
    I'm a junior in high school, and I'm finally returning home to Malibu.
    I needed some time to transform my shaggy little self into the beautiful girl I am today.
    I went and lived with my Auntie Trish in Pennsylvania for the summer.
    I had never been away from my family for that long, so I'm excited to see them.
    But mostly, I'm excited for everyone to see what I had become in just three months.
    I lost 50 pounds, grew my hair down to my butt, and learned how to style myself.
    I had always been the girl who nobody noticed.
    Average, boring, invisible; pretty much a cookie-cutter version of any teenager.
    I was nothing special.
    I was the girl who dreamed of being like the perfect models in Cosmo.
    Both of my older sisters, Meg and Rachel, work for Cosmopolitan Magazine.
    Rachel is the brainy editor, while Meg is a model.
    Before I left, I was the only girl in my family who didn't act like a girl.
    I didn't care what I looked like, or what people thought of me.
    Until I had my first boyfriend.
    His name was Brad, and boy was he cute.
    I thought he dated me because he liked me, but then I found out the hard way that the only reason he dated me was because he had a bet with his friends to see if he could pick the ugliest girl and make her fall in love with him.
    He won the bet, and I left Malibu.
    But, here I am again.
    And you know that saying, "all work, no play"?
    That's what I did: all work, and no play.
    But now, it's all about playing.
    And no one really understands what it takes to be picture perfect.
    chapter three ~
    "Ooh! I want the big cheetah!" I said pointing to the top row of stuffed animals on the wall.
    The teenage boy behind the counter of the game handed me the one I picked out.
    "Thank you!" I said to Sam; after all, he is the one who won it for me.
    When I held the stuffed animal, it was almost the size of me.
    We walked down the boardwalk hand in hand, cheetah in the other, behind Kenz and Chris.
    I couldn't help but smile like an idiot around Sam.
    I know it sounds ridiculous; seeing that I just got out of a 3 year relationship the night before.
    "I'm hungry, are you?" Sam blurted out, interrupting my thoughts.
    "Yeah, I actually kinda am."
    We ate in a pizza place that was barely crowded which was perfect.
    "So, Aven, tell me about yourself," Sam said taking his eyes off of his soda for a split second.
    We talked for a little, basically playing 20 questions at our two-top table.
    We laughed and found out that we had so much in common.
    "Do you have any siblings?" I asked, sipping the last of my cherry Pepsi.
    "A little sister, 6 years old."
    "Awww, so lucky," I made the puppy dog face to go along with the cute voice.
    "Yeah, she's adorable. And then I also have a sister your age."
    "You're so lucky, I'm an only child. Just me and my mom in our house on the beach."
    "What about your dad?"
    "I have one, but he's in the army. So he's never home," I got quiet and picked my napkin apart while avoiding eye contact.
    "I'm sorry I asked. I'm sure he's a great man. I have an uncle in the army as well."
    "The best," I said trying to remember the last time I saw my father. 2 years ago at my birthday party. Way too long ago.
    "So, what school do you go to?" He asked seemingly desperate to change the topic.
    "Miami Beach Senior High School, you?"
    "I go to private school."
    "Oh, you're a rich kid," I joked.
    "Yeah, you are too. I can tell by the way you dress and that you have a house on the beach," he smirked.
    "You're good," I nodded my head and giggled.
    ***
    "We should hang out again, tonight was so much fun!" He said as he walked me to the door of my house.
    "Thank you so much for everything. Especially my new favorite stuffed animal," I said flirtatiously.
    "You're welcome," he smiled and shoved his hands into his pockets.
    He pecked me on the cheek lightly.
    I was upset he didn't want more, but then again, Emerson and I just broke up.
    I felt my cheeks grow hot as we smiled at each other and he turned to leave.
    Kenz ran in the door behind me and we went up to my room to hang out for the rest of the night.
    chapter two ~
    "You guys are the best," I said hugging them each when they dropped me off at my house.
    "Even though he's like my best friend, dropping a girl you've been with for a while for the college life isn't cool."
    This is why I'm friends with Lance. He gets it. He gets how to treat a girl, which means he knows how to be a good friend.
    "Thank you both so much for taking me home."
    "Anything for my best friend. Beach tomorrow? Feels so good to be able to say that since we don't have school anymore!"
    "Okay, text me tomorrow when you wake up. Love you Kenz," I said hugging my friend.
    I walked up into my room, and ripped up every single picture of Emerson and I that was carefully taped to my mirror.
    It felt weird to look at an empty mirror for the first time since freshman year, but it was somehow refreshing.
    I thought I'd be more upset over the break up, but the fact that my friends were there to help me made me realize that I wasn't alone.
    I changed into sweatpants and let my face breathe by washing all of the makeup off.
    Cuddling into my king sized bed, I flipped through channels only to find my favorite movie, Mean Girls.
    I laughed and quoted the entire movie alone, but it felt good to be alone for once.
    To be honest, I didn't think that I would start off my summer with a heartbreak, since teenage girls summers usually ended with a heartbreak.
    ***
    I woke up to the sun streaming through my windows.
    I texted Kenz and told her I was awake and that I'd meet her on our spot at the beach in 20 minutes.
    When I got to the beach, she wasn't there yet, so I just set up.
    I laid my towel out, which was a little difficult since it was windy.
    My blonde hair was flying everywhere but I brushed it out of my face.
    I started lathering myself in tanning oil just as soon as my towel flew across the beach.
    I ran after it, but was stopped when a football hit me in the head.
    I fell over, and held my head.
    "Owwww," I whined.
    "Oh my gosh! Are you okay?!" A guy said as I heard his feet thud on the sand.
    "I'm fine," I muttered under my breath.
    I looked up to see an adorable brunette with gorgeous blue eyes and huge muscles.
    I smiled as he looked down at me.
    He helped me up onto my feet and I pulled my shorts down since they rode up.
    "I'm Sam," he said giving a half smile.
    "Aven," I said back.
    "Sam what are you doi-" a scruffy blonde came running over, "hi, I'm Chris," he said extending his hand out to me.
    "Hi," I said shaking it awkardly.
    "So, you live here?" Chris was clearly flirting with me by the way he talked, but I was more interested in his friend.
    "Uh, yeah, my friend just got here, I have to go!" I spun to leave but didn't get far.
    "Wait!" Sam grabbed my arm so I couldn't keep walking.
    "When can I see you again?" He still hadn't let go of me, which made me blush.
    "I dunno," I said in a cute way.
    "Let me take you out on a date tonight?" He asked letting yet another grin slip from his gorgeous face.
    "A date?" I noticed the cautious tone and regretted even asking.
    "Uh, well you can bring your friend too if you wanna." He quickly added.
    "Okay, the four of us will go out? What about the boardwalk?"
    "Deal, we'll pick you up at 7."
    And with that, we exchanged numbers and I returned to my normal spot with Kenz.
    "Ohmygoshyou'llneverguesswhatjusthappened!" I said quiet enough for them not to hear.
    "Slow down! Explain!"
    "MytowelflewawayandImetthesegorgeousboysandwe'regoingonadatewiththemtonight!"
    "Seriously, Av, I can't understand what you're saying!" Kenzie giggled and shook my shoulders.
    I took a deep breath and explained with details.
    "Omg! What are we doing on the beach still!? We have primping to do!" She said grabbing our stuff and running off the beach.
