Daydreams

The
chef led us to a door that brought you to the back of the
building.
Why were we going outside to eat?
I looked back at Steven who just smiled reassuringly at me and
motioned for me to keep going.
Outside, there was a single picnic table on a small patch of
green grass.
It was perfect.
“Here you are,” the old man said, handing Steven
and I both a menu, “Enjoy. And if any of my boys bother
you, you let me know. Got it?”
“Got it,” Steven said, grinning up at the chef.
“I wasn’t talking to you, hot shot,” he
smirked, slapping Steven on the back of the head, making me
giggle.
“Andrew will be right out to take your order, okay
sweetie?” he said to me.
“Thank you,” I said gratefully.
“No need to thank me. Any friend of Steven’s is a
friend of mine,” he winked before walking back into the
diner.
Steven and I both breathed a sigh of relief when we were
alone.
“Wow, look at you Mr. Popular,” I said
sarcastically.
Steven rolled his eyes and smiled apologetically at me.
“I’m really sorry. I had no idea it was going to be
so packed today. The only time it’s ever this packed is
usually on Saturdays during the school year after a big
game.”
I shrugged.
“It’s okay. I just wish I knew what your friends
were talking about back there. Why were they so surprised you
had a girlfriend?” I asked, titling my head slightly.
Steven rubbed the back of his neck uncomfortably.
“I uh…I wasn’t really one to settle down
with a girl back in college. I uh-” he started, but a
voice interrupted him out of nowhere.
“He was the biggest player on campus,” our waiter
said, stepping out from behind Steven, making his face go hard,
“I would know. I’m the kid’s best
friend.”
“Andrew…” Steven said warningly, not taking
his eyes off mine.
Andrew burst into laughter.
He had dark skin, a slender body, dark, curly hair and a very
sweet smile.
“Man, who am I kidding? This guy invented smash
and pass,” Andrew continued, a big grin spread across his
face.
My eyes widened and I swallowed nervously, biting my lip.
“I don’t think he ever had a girlfriend during his
entire time in college,” Andrew said thoughtfully,
“But you must be one special chick if he asked
you out.”
Steven’s jaw clenched as he snapped his had up to glare
at his best friend.
Andrew put his hands up in defense.
“What, man? She has the right to know. She is
your girlfriend, after all,” he chuckled.
