chapter 12 //sequel to 'summer nights'
I wake up, hearing the familiar voices in my
living room. Blake, Chace, and my dad. After a quick shower, I do
my hair, and pick out an outfit. I get dressed, into faded jeans,
and my favorite of Chace's flannels. On my way down the
stairs, I finish buttoning up the shirt.
"Morning, Megan." Chace greets me at the bottom of the
stairs.
"Morning everyone..." I look to my dad, and see one
more person in the kitchen. It's a woman, that looks the same
age as my dad. She's wearing a light purple button up shirt,
and there's a cowboy hat sitting on the table infront of her.
I smile, and look back over to my dad. He holds up his finger,
and sends Chace and Blake out to the barn.
"Megan," My dad looks at me. "I'd like you to
meet Jane, she's a friend of mine."
"Hi, nice to meet you Megan. Your dad has said a lot of good
things about you."
"Hi..." I force a smile onto my face. "So, are you
guys...dating?"
"Well," She says. "Yes."
"Oh, that's....Great." I nod, and go outside.
"Blake, Chace, hold up!" I tug on my boots that are on
the edge of the porch, and catch up to them.
"Hey," They both say in unison. "What's
up?"
"Can I come over today, to the ranch?" I ask.
They look at each other, they both look confused.
"I have fall lessons today," Chace says. "They end
at two. You can chill there though, I'm sure Blake's new
girly friend will be there."
"She's not my girlfriend." Blake playfully punches
Chace. "She's a friend. Just a friend." I shrug my
shoulders, and we walk down the drive. The Lucas' ranch
isn't far. I sit on the gate while Chace cleans out the
stalls. Blake brings a girl up the drive. She has short blonde
hair. She's a girl from school. I roll my eyes, and jump
down. I wipe off the back of my pants, and look at
Blake.
"Remember when you asked if you could be happy?" I
snarl. "Well, she sure won't cover it."
I walk over to the stalls, and see Chace. He's with one of
the horses.
He's stroking the horses mane, when I jump him. He looks to
me, and comes over to me. I sit on one of the bales, he sits next
to me, with a curious look in his eye.
"Well..." He says. "Spill."
"Why is it that I get so... Jealous?" I sigh.
"Everyone does." He laughs. "C'mon, you can
come watch my lesson." He drags me back out to where the
boys train kids. There's now two horses in the pen. I sit on
the gate, avoiding Blake. The girl from school comes over, and
asks me to come down.
"Yes, ma'am?" I tilt my head.
"Why'd you say I wouldn't make Blake happy?"
She sighs. "I mean, I'm not dating him yet, but I'd
like to. Were you being serious?"
"Well, no." I put my hand on the fence. "You see,
I dated him, not too long ago. He's my best friend. If
y'all are happy together, then sure...date him." I
notice Blake smile from behind her. He comes forward, and asks if
we can be alone.
"Thank you." He says. "For letting me be
happy."
