Chapter 17

Jaime’s POV
“Yes you do, she goes to school with me. That’s probably why I recognized you in a weird way, I used to be friends with her.”
The words coming out of Louie’s mouth seemed so surreal. I shook my head with disbelief. There’s no way in hell that I have a sister. I’m an only child, that’s how it’s been my whole life. How could my parents keep something like that from me?
“Excuse me,” I said getting up from the table.
“Do you need me to drive you home, Jame?” Kerry said, standing up.
“I should be fine, I see my boyfriend right over there.”
I pointed over to the parking lot where he was getting out of his car with Savannah and Riley I guess to come eat here. I sprinted through the tables to him and my friends whom I haven’t seen in what feels like forever. I grabbed his arm and caught my breath.
“What’s wrong, babe?” He asked holding me up.
“I need you to get me home to my parents… NOW.”
“Why?”
“Just, please, take me home, I don’t have my car with me.”
“Okay, let’s go, I’m really sorry you guys. If you want, you can eat, and I’ll come back to pick you up,” he apologized to them as I dragged him to his car.
“What the hell is going on?” He asked as he started up his Jeep Wrangler.
“I was out to lunch with some of my co-workers, y’know, just a celebration for finishing my training and what-not, and a guy I work with asks me what my last name is. I tell him, and he goes all freaky on me saying that he knows my name. I told him where I go to school, which clearly didn’t help, and then he suddenly remembers. He tells me that I have a sister that he used to be friends with, named Skylar. She’s supposedly my identical twin, and I need to talk to my parents ASAP.”
I watched as he took all of the information in and thought to myself how crazy all of this really sounded.
“Babe, please don’t hate me…”
“What’d you do…”
“Nothing, but you know that car that was practically stalking your house?” I nodded, “I looked into it, and the girl inside looked exactly like you, and Savannah told me she saw the same girl in the same car.”
“And you didn’t tell me!? Are you kidding!” I was furious.
“Babe, I can see the smoke coming out of your ears, but you have to understand. I felt there was some reason your parents didn’t tell you about your sister, and I didn’t want to ruin anything they were potentially protecting you from. It’s their place as your family to tell you, not mine.”
“Alright, I guess it’s okay. I mean if anything, I should be mad at my parents.”
We pulled up to the house and I slammed his door shut and jumped out of the car. I stormed into my house and screamed for my parents. They came downstairs and I freaked out seeing their ‘innocent’ faces.
“So, when’s the last time you guys heard the name Skylar?” They just stared at me with blank faces, “Could it be when you gave birth to her!?” I screamed.
“Honey, calm down, you don’t know what you’re talking about,” my mom said.
“Yes, I do. One of my co-workers said they go to school with her and we look exactly alike and have the same freaking last name!”
“It’s complicated,” my dad said stepping towards me.
“Are you even my real parents?
“I’m your real father, yes. I am also Skylar’s father.”
“Mom?...” I could feel tears in my eyes as my voice trembled.
“I’m so sorry…” she sobbed into my dad’s shoulder.
“How did any of this even happen?
“Skylar’s mother is also your mother. We were married at one point, when we had the two of you. When we split, we never wanted to see each other again, so we each took one child. I got you, and she got Skylar. We never thought you two would find out about each other, to be honest. She lived in Philadelphia at the time, all the way up the coast. I guess she just moved back here when Skylar found out about you.”
I ran up to my room hysterically crying, trying to make myself believe it was all just a bad dream.
“Can we go to the beach? I wanna be anywhere but here,” I said to Mitch when he came up behind me. He nodded his head and I got changed and off we went.
