CHAPTER TWELVE ~  DISTRACTIONS
 

               I hadn't even been home for an hour before Nate called. I debated whether or not to pick up the phone; I knew he'd be really, really mad. I quickly decided I owed it to him to answer. "Hello?" I said hesitantly. "Kate?" he asked. His voice sounded far away. "Yeah, it's me. Look, Nate, I-" He cut me off. "Oh, my god, Kate. I'm so glad you're okay. You scared the crap out of me. Where'd you go?" I was confused. "Nate, I left you a note. I'm fine, I swear. I'm at home." He answered, "I know, but it was so short, and I didn't know if - wait, home? You're obviously not home, Kate." I sighed, "My real home, Nate. New York. I'm sorry. Are you mad?" He was silent for a minute. "No, I'm not mad. I guess I should have been expecting it. I actually don't blame you. I just thought you'd say goodbye." I could feel the tears in my throat. I missed Nate already. "I-I miss you, Natie. I should have told you I was leaving." I could hear the sadness in his voice when he said, "Yeah, I miss you too, Kate. But you're already gone." This made my breath catch. "Oh, Nate," I cried. "I couldn't see him. I couldn't hear him. I couldn't do it, Nate! The pain would be intolerable." Nate sounded distracted when he replied, "Yeah. Um. I think I should go now. Talk to you later, okay?" He clicked off. "O...kay?" I answered, a second too late.
                The whole rest of the day, I couldn't help but wonder what had happened to Nate at the end of our phone call. Was he all right? Was Charlotte? Or was it someone else? I knew I must be being absurd. Everything is fine. I tried not to think about it for the rest of the day, but it was the first thing to come to mind when my doorbell rang in the middle of the night.
