My Last Breath
P a r t T e n
[Sorry it took so long! Just got over a horrible
break up :'( But part 11 will be up sooner, i
promise.]
I was in the car with
Katrina, driving to the hospital, when she turned to me and asked
me how Declan was. "He's okay," I answered, and
turned up the radio before she went too far. Before the tears
started to fall.
We arrived at the hospital. I said Hello to the receptionist, who
I'd become close to while visiting Declan, and she directed us to
my Dad's room.
"Hi, Dad." Katrina said as she walked in the room, not
quite looking at him.
"Katrina," He greeted her.
"Hey," I said nervously.
"Leighlani."
It was awkard. Kat and I stood there looking around the room,
rocking back and forth on our heels.
"Thanks for coming," he broke the silence.
"No problem, Dad," we both answered.
"How are you?" I asked.
He shrugged. "Eh."
"How's the other person?"
"Alive."
"That's good. For both of you." I patted his hand,
still awkwardly, and faked a gentle smile.
He grunted.
"Hey, uh, Dad," Katrina said.
"What?"
"Tomorrow night's my prom," She began. "And
my date can't use his car because his Dad needs it."
"Okay..?"
"So..uh.. I was wondering, can we drive your
car? Since we can't afford a limo."
"Um.. Trina.." I tried to stop her, wondering if
she knew how idiotic her request was.
"Shut up, Leighlani," my dad said. "We're
talking. Don't be rude." He glared at me, then continued.
"Katrina, you know how i was in a CAR
accident?"
"Yes, daddy."
"I was driving. MY car." His voice got
louder.
"Oh."
"it's in the shop. Can't use it for another few weeks. Well,
I can't use it anyway. Both my legs are broken."
They were starting to fight. I took this as my opportunity
to sneak away to Declan's room.
When I found it empty, I tried to find the nurse.
I finally found her.
"Leighlani! Hi, sweetie." She called.
"Hi, Sally. Where's Declan?"
"Oh..Um.. He's in one of the uh.."
"Yes?"
"The surgery room. He's getting a very large tumor
removed.." She trailed off.
"Oh. He didn't tell me he'd be getting surgery today. When
will he be visit-able?"
"Uh, Leighlani, sit down."
I did. She started talking before i could ask questions.
"Honey, Declan's tumor is near a very major artery. It's a
big tumor, too. They have to be really, really careful when
they're cutting around the tumor, and this could take the whole
night. If they aren't careful, and they hit the artery,
well..."
"Well..?"
"Declan could die."
