Take me by the hand
Five
"How come I wasn't warned of a uniform?" I asked Leilani, taking a seat on the bench next to her. She shrugged and sipped her orange juice, "Now eat, we have a lot to do." There were 5 long tables, some turned horizontally, others not. Benches sat on either side, and on each table breakfast foods of all kinds were scattered. I reached forward and grabbed an apple and poured some water out of a jug nearby.
"You have some testing to do, and then your day is empty."
I nodded, not really paying attention, a group of boys had just sauntered in, looking unfairly cute in the uniform. They laughed and joked their way to the table next to ours. Only one of them paused to look around.
He was tall, maybe 6 foot, with messy dark brown hair. He was too far away for me to get a good look at his face, but his uniform shirt was completely untucked, his tie dangling to the side. He sat down and reached for a bagel, I averted my eyes back to
Leilani. "Well, are you coming?" She asked, she was standing now and collecting her books. I nodded and grabbed my own, and followed her out of the hall.
"About 3 hours in this room, and then meet me back for lunch." she walked away,
leaving me dumbfounded in front of what looked like an empty classroom.
I inhaled and stepped inside, I owned this place.
There were a couple students scattered here and there, I tried to catch the eye of
Angelica, her long wavy brown hair was pushed back in a headband.
I went and sat next to her, she smiled and made a space on the two person desk.
It was your average classroom, just stone walls and floors.
A group of kids came in, actually, a group of girls surrounding about 4 guys.
The tall boy I had seen sat in the desk next to my own, his friend next to him and the other two in the desk behind theirs. The girls swooned and sighed, and found their own seats, just as the teacher came.
She was old and mean looking. Her graying black hair was pulled back into a slick tight bun, her mouth was forever scowling.
Her uniform was impeccable, not a string out of place, pleats ironed and all.
She sat down at the desk in front of the room.
"Diagnostic Testing Today."
She spoke loudly and slowly, as if we were young children. And when I looked around I realized some of us were. I was in the older group, but a couple of 13 year olds were giggling furiously.
She wrote her name, Mrs. Sullivan, on the board and passed out booklets and answer sheets. "No Cheating."
And I don't think anybody dared.
She sat back down and turned a small dial, a loud ticking started up and she opened up a book.
"You have 30 minutes for the first section. Begin."
I gulped, I've always hated testing..
