What your english teacher thinks it meant: The author clearly is using symbolism here. The chair was black to show the girl is in a dark place, a place of desperation. She is sitting on the chair for support, since she is physically and mentally unstable.

the simple things in life;
coming straight home and going to bed. buying amazing clothes you found
on sale. holding hands. unexpected moments that turn into favorite memories.
talking on the phone with your best friends 'til 3AM. Taking long showers

If the GH sound in ENOUGH is pronounced "F" and the O in WOMEN makes the short "I" sound & the TI in NATION is pronounced "SH" then the word
"GHOTI"
is pronouced just like
"FISH"
