Hold on to Him
Chapter One
“Remind me why we had to come with you to feed Miss Thomas’s cat?” I sighed, kicking the snow.
“Because it’s scary over here alone. Especially in a snowstorm. Besides, Megan, Mom even said you two had to come.” The three of us made our way across the lawn in the midst of a February blizzard. Ashley skipped in front of me to unlock the front door, but my brother sank back to my side.
“She’s so annoying,” he sighed.
“Joey, she’s eleven. When you were eleven, I’m sure you were been the same way.”
Ashley pushed the door open and began calling for the cat. “Max! Lunchtime!” she hollered, hopping up the basement stairs and into the tiny den, with Joey and I at her heels.
“You and Joey go find the cat, I’ll go feed him,” I offered, and they agreed as they made their way to the staircase leading to the top floor.
As I made my way into the kitchen, I noticed a large shadow in the corner of the room. My breath shortened; I was anxious that someone broke into the house.
The man who stood in front of me was just as surprised as I was.
He only looked at me from across the room as our eyes were brought together. He was young, that was certain. His rusty auburn curls were matted as they fell before his golden speckled eyes.
“Wait, Megan?” he asked me after a few brief moments of silence.
I creased my brow and stepped back. “Do I know you?”
“Yeah,” he laughed shortly. “I'm Justin, your neighbor. Damn, I haven’t seen you since you were like, six.”
I knew most everybody in my small little neighborhood, so at first, I didn’t believe him. But then I remembered the people who lived right next door to us, an older couple with a young son, who my mother often described as very handsome. They didn’t speak much, so it made sense.
“Wait, you live in the brick house?”
He nodded. “Well, kind of. I live in an apartment in Salem, but I’ll visit my parents every now and again.” He smiled slightly. “What about you? Are you in college?”
“No,” I shrugged. “I’m a junior in high school.”
“A junior in high school?” he repeated. “You look so much older.”
I smiled, a bit flirtatiously. “I get that a lot.”
He grinned right back at me. “So why are you here? Breaking in?” he kidded.
“No, we’re feeding the cat. What about you?”
“Making sure the heat’s regulated. For the cat.”
Joey and Ashley found Max sleeping in a closet, but they didn’t want to disturb it, so we just put food in his bowl and announced we were leaving.
“Well, do you guys need a ride home?”
“No, we can walk,” I told him, denying him. There was a sense of surprise in his eyes, but he let us go.
As the snow whirled in flurries around us walking home, I felt Ashley nudge my arm gently, so I glanced up to her.
She grinned deviously. “You like him.”
Sup gurls. Yeah, I know, this chapter is awful. Don't hate me. It gets better. But the next few chapters are like this.
