We met in kindergarten. We were best friends.
She always told me she loved my eyes. I didn't quite know why.
I was in love with her, so of course my face lit up immensely whenever she said it.
She was beautiful, kind, and extremely funny.
We'd be talking about nothing, and she'd turn to me and whisper,
    "I like your eyes."
One day, I was playing basketball,
waiting for her to drive over to my house to have a game with me.
Suddenly, I got a phone call.
It was her mom. She was in a panic.
I couldn't quite understand what she was saying. It sounded like,
"Aaron, come quick! Kelsey, accident, Main Street! Blood. Come now!"
I had no clue what happened,
so I ran to Main Street with my basketball shorts and a tee shirt on.
I saw Kelsey's mom helplessly crying, waiting for the ambulance to arrive.
I saw a totaled car, blood everywhere.
    Then I saw her, Kelsey.
My heart stopped as I frantically ran over to her.
"Kelsey? Kelsey!" She was unconscious. I started crying.
I know it isn't very manly, but I couldn't help it.
Before I could say anymore, the medics took her away,
the main source of blood coming from her head.
I went to the hospital that night,
    I went every night.
in fact, the only time I left was to go out to eat, but that's it.
The doctors tried getting me to leave, but I refused.
    It was all my fault.
If it wasn't for me, wanting to play basketball with her,
she wouldn't be going through this.
It was already four days, and she hasn't woken up.
On the fifth day, I saw her eyes gently open.
    "Kelsey?" I called.
    She wasn't quite awake yet.
Suddenly, doctors came rushing in, telling me I had to wait outside.
I did, for a few hours.
One of the doctors finally came out saying,
    "I understand that you're Kelsey's friend, Aaron?"
    "Yes," I whispered.
    He bit his lip.
    "She woke up, she's fine,
but I'm afraid she has long term memory loss."
"Are you serious?" I almost shouted.
    "I'm afraid so."
    I didn't meet his gaze. I couldn't.
I wasn't going to say anything, so he spoke again.
"You can go see her if you want,
but she doesn't remember anything, not even her mom."
I walked in, trembling in horror.
I saw her. She looked helpless as she slept.
I waited a few hours, until I saw her eyes opening gently again.
I expected doctors to run in, rushing me out.
Instead, she looked me straight in the eyes, and whispered,
"I don't know you, but I like your eyes."

Don't you just hate those moments when you feel really irrelevant, and that nobody even thinks about you? Like when you're in a group of people you could just wane away in the distance and no one would even notice or care?

When I was seven years old, I had no worries in the world. I was seven years old for God's sake. My biggest worry was what snacks I would be having for lunch and that I better be able to buy those cookies at lunch.
When you were seven years old, I'm sure you didn't have any worries, either. We are too young to realize our surroundings and too young and carefree to understand them either.
I was forced to understand my surroundings when I was seven years old.
    It was October 6, 2002.
It was sunny out, I remember that.
I woke that morning, just like any other seven year old.
Ready to go on more adventures.
My mother, sister and grandmother and I all have this tradition.
We all go out Pumpkin Picking for Halloween.
We would usually pick out 8 or 10 pumpkins.
Our town knew us for the best pumpkins.
I didn't and still don't care how dumb that sounds.
So, all four of us got up early and went to the farm.
I remember what I had last said to him and what he said to me.
He told my mother that he would be heading out soon.
"I'm going to go to HomeDepot, Lori.
I need to pick up some tools for the shed."
This wasn't out of the ordinary.
He was always working out in the shed.
I walked over to him, like every other time I would.
He got down on his knees and said "Love you, Amanda."
I wrapped my arms around him and said, "I love you, dad!"
And then he told me "I'll see you later, peanut."
I felt his stubble from his unshaven beard brush across my left cheek.
That was the last conversation I ever had with him.
My mother, sister, and grandmother and I got home around noon.
We didn't see the red truck in the driveway.
We figured he had gone to HomeDepot already.
That he would be home soon.
    Soon turned into hours later.
But it wasn't him that returned.
We saw flashing lights come down our road.
Being the curious neighborhood we are, everyone got out of their houses.
They pulled right into our driveway.
Another on the side of our lawn.
"Mrs. Urmann, we need your family to come outside with us.
    Everyone."
    The atmosphere changed then.
    It was foggy and dreary.
It's as if I knew what was coming.
"Mrs. Urmann, family, we found your husband.
    He was dead on impact."
That's when the world went dead.
My mother crying, my sister, my grandparents.
I swore my dog even started crying.
I didn't know what was happening.
I fugured that just meant he was on a long trip.
As years passed, I finally saw that he wasn't on a trip.
    He was never coming home.
I've only ever told this story in full detail to one person.
I don't enjoy talking about it, as you can imagine.
Sometimes I thank God for giving me that last moment with him.
I can still feel his stubble rubbing on my cheek.
I can still feel his hug and see his smile.
Whenever someone tells me I remind them of my dad,
I say "Thank you, that's the best compliment I have ever gotten."
I'm currently sitting at the spot where our last conversation was held.
Right in our foyer on the porch.
I walk through it every day.
And all I can see is him.

THIS IS WORTH READING, TRUST ME!
Earlier this year I was in one of my classes, and this one really nice girl asked to use the restroom, but the teacher told her no. Well the girl politely asked again, and he said no again. A few minutes later she said it was an emergency, and he still turned her down. You could tell she was obviously annoyed, but then about three minutes later asks again, and tells him it is a serious emergency, and she has to go, but he still says no. So the girl stands up in front of everyone, and her face is all red because she's embarassed, and she says to the teacher in front of EVERYONE that she just started her period, and she literally needs to use the restroom. At this point everyone is staring. The teacher STILL told her to go sit down and didn't let her go. Everyone in the class was confused and shìt, then OUT OF NO WHERE the kid next to the girl, a varsity football player, stands up and says "Don't you have a wife? Didn't you grow with your mom or sister's? She's started her period, and she needs to use the bathroom, and she's going whether you let her or not!" Then he walked over, pulled the girl with him, and walked with her to the bathroom. When they came back the doûche bag of a teacher called security on them, and the guy got suspended for standing up for the girl.
I will never forget that day. A dámn football player was man enough to stand up for a girl against a teacher and defended her on a girl problem she was having. Not many high school guys are mature enough to even say the word "period" much less do what he did.
