In this particular code, where it says background image, you'd remove the URL in parentheses and replace it with the URL of the image you want to use. To use your own color fade, you'd go to the website I mentioned above, type what you want it to say, and then copy the code they give you, remove the previously used fade's code, and replace it with yours by pasting it there.
I hope that didn't sound too confusing -- I'm awful at explaining processes. But, as with any new thing you attempt, it's a matter of trial and error. I think you'll eventually get it. You seem smart.

This particular format is one by br0kenwings. I took its code and simply changed the background image and color fade. (I use http://patorjk.com/text-color-fader/ for fades, and tumblr has really gorgeous vertical nature photographs.)
If you need a more detailed explanation let me know, but I'm assuming you already know how to get a quote's code and edit it. (:

I went back and found the person who posted it and asked if it was okay and they said that is was perfectly fine that I used it.

It helps so much when they understand. I know for a fact that my boyfriend and I have already gotten closer because now he knows what is wrong whenever I have anxiety and he automatically starts trying to help. It is so great.
