The Summer of First Kisses
Part One
The Pact
Mckenna Hope Flynn
“Thank god school is over.” Mckenna sighed to her three best friends in the world. With Lyric and Shaylee on her right and Melrose on her left they proudly strode to their bus taking up the entire sidewalk, and do you know why they could? Because they were no longer seventh graders, they were eighth graders, the big kids. They were in charge and no one could tell them that they couldn’t take up the whole sidewalk. Lyric laughed a bit and replied, “Yeah if I had to listen to one more of Mr. Porter’s lectures I think I would pull my own hair out and then Shaylee’s.” Shaylee quickly covered her hair with both her hands and laughed. Melrose then pointed out the bus and they ran on. As they giggled and tried to squeeze their way through the aisle without unlinking arms Mckenna noticed Darren sitting by himself. She then convinced her friends that she had to sit with him and they could just have Melrose sit on the floor under the seat with Lyric and Shaylee. So they all took their seats and the bus driver took off. Mckenna gave Darren a quick hug and then began talking with her friends.
Darren and her had been best friends since pre-school, well they were then she started to need girl best friends. They were still close and all but hanging out wasn’t really a thing they did now. She didn’t mind. They saw each other a lot and they usually didn’t fight so everything was pretty good. As soon as they pulled up to Mckenna’s house all the girls got off the bus. They were having their annual end of the school year sleepover in Mckenna’s basement. This year it was Shaylee’s turn to bring the inspiration. Every year one of the girls had to bring an item that would inspire them to have the best summer ever. Last year Lyric brought the book, The Summer of Skinny Dipping and the year before that Melrose brought the lyrics to the song summer girl. Shaylee was super creative so Mckenna was super excited to see what she brought.
After having a movie marathon on old movies such as, Grease, American Graffiti, Beaches, and Animal House it was time to see the inspiration. They all sat in a circle and Shaylee dug through her pink vera bradley duffle bag. When she came up she was holding a crumpled up menu from the local diner. “Is this some kind of joke?” Mckenna asked accusingly. “Yeah this is serious.” Melrose chimed in. “No, no, I promise this will be great, I, uh wrote a poem.” Lyric smiled and said, “So are you going to read it?” They all laughed and Shaylee cleared her throat dramatically and stood. “Summer 2012, by Shaylee T. Clarke...tank tops, short shorts/ sweet smiles, building forts/ kissy faces, bare feet/ silly pictures, crazy heat/ no school, sleeping in/ bye-bye parents, tan skin/ long hair, sun-kissed/ friendship bracelets on your wrist/ car keys, swimming pool/ thinking that you’re super cool/ first kisses, late nights/ taking life to new heights/ don’t look back now it’s our time/ summer 2012, make it shine.” They applauded and she sat down. “That poem got me thinking you guys.” Mckenna said. “And we know that doesn’t happen often.” Melrose joked. Mckenna threw a pillow across the room and it hit Melrose in the face. “No seriously, we’ve done most of that stuff, but one part stuck out to me that we haven’t done, we all have never had our first kiss.” Lyric laughed a bit, but then nodded in agreement. Melrose then said, “Well, what’s your point.” “The inspiration said we should get ours. Shaylee smiled and then agreed. Mckenna put her hand in the center. “I say that we should promise to get our first kisses before the summer is over. And then to carve or write your initials somewhere nearby so it is always remembered” One by one all their hands we piled into the center, and the pact was made.
