Chapter 2
“Come on, Evelyn!” Sienna begged me.
“No, Sienna. My parents won’t let me!” I objected.
“Pretty please?”
I nodded negatively.
“Pretty please with sugar on top?”
“I said no! They won’t let me! I hardly know you!” I protested.
“Yes, like I’m a criminal or something! COME ONNNNN” she begged me with her puppy eyes.
I fished my cell phone from my bag. “Fine!”
“Yay!” Sienna cheered, clapping her hands.
I rolled my eyes and called my mother. I waited for two minutes till she picked up. “Hey mom” I murmured.
“Hey Evelyn. Is everything okay?”
I gulped. “Yes. See, I was wondering if I could go over Sienna’s house and do my homework there…”
“Sienna? Who’s Sienna?” she asked me with curiosity.
“My best friend, mom! I’m talking all the time about her” I claimed.
“Oh, yeah, I remember now. That new girl?”
I sighed with relief. “Yes”.
She remained silent for a couple of seconds. I was all sweaty, waiting for her answer. “Okay, you can go” she finally said.
“YES! Thanks mom!” I cheered and ended the call. Sienna smiled.
“She said yes, didn’t she?” she asked, cheering.
“Yes! You were right” I said, hugging her.
“I’m always right” she said, striking a ridiculous pose.
I rolled my eyes, laughing. “Get over yourself”.
“Let’s go, we need to go to my house! Oh hey, can you have dinner at my place? Pleaseeeeeee” she begged again.
“Fine, fine! Let’s go” I said, dragging her to her car.
Yeah… I prefer to walk to school. I don’t even know how to drive and guess what, I’m 17 years old. It’s just that I was never interested in learning since all I was gonna use it is to drive myself to school. Useless, in other words. I had no friends to drive to their houses; I was never invited to parties and things so yeah, buying a car seemed useless…
I jumped inside Sienna’s MINI and she slipped into the car as well. After a couple of minutes she drove off quickly. I glanced over at Everett and his friends, who were hanging around on the parking lot, flirting with some whores. Oops, did I really say that word? No, no, no. I’m not gonna be the bad girl now, seriously. It’s not my thing. I’m a good girl.
He shot me a glance, before turning to his friends. I focused on the road, feeling my cheeks burning. Sienna looked at me, raising an eyebrow. “What’s wrong with you?”
My eyes widened as I looked at her in fear. “N–N–Nothing” I mumbled. “I’m good”.
She laughed. “Of course you are. You seem like you just saw a ghost, Evelyn”.
Yes, because I did, I thought to myself. He was a ghost to me all these years. I couldn’t even see him. Last time I saw him, he was 11. Now he’s almost 18. His eyes were so beautiful, oh these eyes! I could just sit there and stare at him forever. His black messy hair and his pale but awesome complexion completed the look. He was so amazing, just perfect. Yes, I had fallen head over hills…I think. Who knows, maybe I was just being stupid. All these years, I was in love with just an image I created. I was in love with Everett with the way I wanted him to be. Today, I realized he was so much better than I could even dare to imagine.
I played with my fingers awkwardly, waiting for our ride to Sienna’s home to end. I felt the car stopping and I watched as Sienna got out. I did the same and followed her to the front door. She unlocked it and entered the house.
“Hellooooooo is anybody there?” she shouted.
“I’m in the kitchen!” a woman’s voice replied. We both walked to the kitchen, where we found a woman, probably her mother, reading a cook book next to a pan with boiling water inside.
“Hey mom” Sienna greeted the woman.
“Sienna, hey! Who’s your friend?”
“My name is Evelyn, nice to meet you” I shook hands with her.
“I’m Cassidy” she just said.
“We’re here to study, so we better go upstairs, right Evelyn?” Sienna questioned me.
I nodded. “Yeah, sure. Let’s go”.
“Later mom!” Sienna said, running up the stairs, with me following her.
Her room was located at the end of the hallway. It had an amazing view and I could tell it was the brightest room of the house. Not that I’ve been to other rooms. It’s just a speculation.
“My stupid stepbrother might come around, just saying” she murmured while searching for her books.
I blinked. “Who?”
“The son of my stepdad” she explained. “He’s 17 too, just like us. He’s so stupid, I swear” she whined, making me laugh. “He might like burst into the room just to annoy me. He does that a lot”.
I laughed. “I see”.
“Do you have siblings?”
I gulped. “No”.
“I’m sorry… Don’t worry, you can be my sister! Since we’re best friends…” Sienna said, smiling.
“I’d love to, Sienna” I smiled.
“Good! Now let’s…”
Suddenly, the door opened. Someone walked in too fast. I couldn’t see who he was, though. I blinked, looking at Sienna. She rolled her eyes and sighed, annoyed.
“Hey there Sienna!” someone shouted.
“Stop doing that, stepbrother!” she mocked.
I looked up. Fearful, I noticed Everett standing above us.
I trembled uncontrollably.
Everett is Sienna’s stepbrother.
