~ Chapter 8

Louis
goes quickly down the cliff top, it's quite high but still
only takes him about five minutes to reach the bottom, if even
that. "Who wants to go next?" The instructor asks. I
raise my hand and step forward. "Put your legs into the
straps please." The instructor sounds kind of bored.
"Hand your glasses to one of your friends." I sigh when
Harry steps forward and holds out his hand for my glasses. He
smiles and I roll my eyes.
I've completely ignored Harry the whole time. I can
sense that he's trying to make eye contact with me but I keep
my stare hard and ahead. The 20 minute car ride up to the cliff
was a bit awkward though. All of the boys were joking and messing
around and I felt like such a kill joy, because I really
don't know any of them that well. I felt a bit like a 3rd
wheel. Or a 6th wheel in this case. If that makes any sense.
I click on my helmet and grab my hands onto the rope.
I've never been abseiling before but the instructor's
um...instructions, were quite clear. I turn myself backwards and
kick off from the edge. I plant my feet firmly on the rock and
start to push myself down, while the instructor holds the rope at
the top and lowers me.
When I get a little over halfway down the cliff I suddenly hear a
sharp tweak like something breaking. I look up in horror to see
the rope straining and snapping. "Help!" I scream.
"The rope's breaking!" The only person at the
bottom to catch me is Louis. I hear the boys and instructor at
the top panicking and I feel myself very slowly being inched
upwards. I think they're trying to bring me back up but I
don't think there's enough time.
I start to cry as the rope strains on it's last thread and
scream in complete terror as it finally snaps in half. I fall
down fast, slicing through the air like a knife. "I'll
catch you Belle!" I hear Louis yell, but I don't count
my blessings. As I near the ground I see Louis standing beneath
me. I plummet down and he takes a leap to catch me.
He catches the top half of me but my legs hit the ground like a
bullet and I scream in pain. I hear screeching tyres of the car
coming down to the bottom of the cliff, and faint voices of
concern shouting, but that's all.
Before I drift into unconsciousness.
