Pretend It's Love
~Chapter 4~
Harry finally reponds after about a day. All he says is "Look, we hooked up and everything. And it was nice, but I can't hurt my.. friend like that. Sorry." I throw my phone across the room and go downstairs for breakfast. Veronica is sitting on the table, eating some cereal. "Can I talk to you?" I ask, sitting down. She nods, so I continue. "Let's say you hooked up with someone and kinda hoped they liked you. But then they tell you they can't hurt a friend like that, a certain friend that you kind of happened to kiss, but only on the cheek, what would you do?" I ask. She stares at me, her mouth hanging open full of cereal. "Nevermind," I sigh. She laughs, and soon I join in. A knock on the door interrupts us. I decide I should get it.
"Oh, Zayn." I say quietly, hoping I don't look too terrible. "Hey, look, can we talk?" He asks. "Yeah, come into my room," I invite him. He trails after me, before closing the door, leaving us together in a room. "So.." I whisper. "About you kissing me," He says, getting right to the point. "On the cheek," I point out. He nods, a smile on his lips. "I'm kind of all mixed up right now, ya know? I'm with Perrie, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel anything-" And just like that I feel rejected. "It didn't mean anything." I lie. "What?" He asks, surprised. "It was just a weird thing. I wanted to show you how grateful I was." I shrug. "Meant nothing," I sigh. I lean on my dresser. "Why do you always do that?" For the first time ever, my rudeness gets to Zayn. He starts to get angry.
"Do what?" I act oblivious. "You always get all defensive and all rude, like you're trying to keep people away!" He shouts. "I don't understand it, and I just want to know why." He snaps. "What do you mean why?" I snap, getting even more defensive. "Oh." Zayn whispers like he just noticed something. "It was a guy, wasn't it?" Zayn asks. "Stop Zayn." I say quickly, tears in my eyes. "He hurt you so you think every guy is the same way!" Zayn shouts, figuring it out. "STOP!" I scream, literally about to start sobbing.
"Who was he?" Zayn asks.
I stare at him, no witty remarks on the tip of my tongue. No mean comments in my head. Just the truth waiting to get out.
"His name was Ryan. We were best friends since second grade. Sophomore year in highschool.. I started to really like him. I told him and he said he liked me too, but he didn't want to ruin our friendship. That was enough for me, just knowing he liked me. But other people found out, they started rumors about me. How much I liked him, what I'd do to get him to date me. And suddenly, our friendship didn't matter. The fact that he liked me didn't matter. I was nothing. His appearance was worth more than I was," I whisper, trailing off. "And that's it Zayn. That's the truth. Are you happy now?" I snap, wiping away a tear.
"Hardly," He whispers. "I didn't want to make you sad," He whispers, leaning in close. I put my hands up and back away.
"Don't worry, I'm used to it."
