Chapter 7: Whatever it Takes is Fine
The next morning is about as drab and boring as
the past few mornings. Talk about summer fun. Breakfast
wasn't easy to get through what with all the questions.
"How was it?" Liam had asked.
"Did you have fun?" There went Zayn.
"What did you do there?" Louis inquired.
"Was there food?" Harry wanted to know.
Niall, strangely, was the only one who had kept his mouth
shut.
So it was sort of a relief to be away from everyone if only for a
little while. In the safe vicinity of your room no one bothered
you or came in to ask questions, not even Niall who had done a
lot of that lately.
The first thing you do once alone is dial Raquel. Your fingers
punch in the number automatically after years of calling daily,
and her familiar voicemail almost brings tears to your eyes.
Almost. Now it was your turn to attack.
Just like on the phone the other day you tell her everything.
Everything since the night on the beach to today. Not leaving out
a single detail. You don't really think she's going to
listen, but it's worth a try.
The next thing you do is log onto your email. Phones aren't
the only way of communication, and the best way to make Raquel
listen is to bug her to wits end until finally she gives in.
It's certainly your lucky day today for as soon as you log on
you notice the green icon next to her name. Good, she's
online.
You click her name and type, "Did you get my
voicemail?"
A moment passes before she bothers to reply.
"Yes."
"Did you listen to it?" you inquire. You're a bit
desperate now to say the least.
"No."
"Well, can you listen to it?" you holler onto the
computer. That is, if it's even possible to holler through
IM.
"No, I don't care what you have to say. I'm through
with you. FOR THE LAST TIME GOODBYE," she enters and
immediately afterwards logs off.
How was this possible? The two of you have been bestfriends since
kindergarten and now she suddenly turns on you when you most need
her. The only person who doesn't look at you as though you
are some sort of monster is Janel. And Janel doesn't exactly
qualify as best friend material.
Nothing works. Raquel and Ben are never going to like you again
and their distaste rubs off on everyone else.
The only people you have left in the world are your parents, and
of course the guys, Louis, Liam, Zayn, Harry, and . . .
Niall.
You said just two days ago that you didn't want to be
anything more than friends with Niall, but so much had changed in
two days that maybe . . . just maybe
you do want to be more than this?
