Island
Chapter Four

                My eyes fluttered opened and I squinted as the sunlight shone into my eyes. At first, I had no idea what was going on and where I was. Quickly, everything started filling my head again. Plane crash. Lucas. Blacking out. How long was I out for? What happened?
Judging by the sun, I guessed it was a little after noon. I hadn't been out for more than a couple of hours. I groaned when I realized how badly my stomach still hurt.
 I lifted my head, which was propped up on a pile of giant, exotic leaves. Lucas was sitting on a fallen tree a few feet away, looking at me worriedly.
 "Aren't you thirsty?"I croaked, through my dry, cracked lips. "Can't a human only survive two days without water?"
                "Nah, I found something to drink," Lucas said, picking a coconut up from a neat pile on the ground. He took another coconut, and began banging it against the first one. When it wouldn't break open, he took a large rock and hit the coconut as hard as he could. The coconut opened, and a cloudy liquid spilled over the edge of it. After taking a sip, he brought it over to me.
 I gulped it down, and instantly felt much better. Then, Lucas and I shared the white meat from inside the coconut. I looked up from the forest of palm trees, and other strange vegetation, seeing a dark, cloudy sky. We decided to go deeper into the forest to find shelter. We carried all we had… a pile of coconuts. I still didn't feel well, so I leaned on Lucas for support. He kissed me softly on the nose as we traveled into the forest.
             We walked for a couple of miles, brushing plants out of our way. I saw a small, colorful bird perched on a branch above. We watched as it flew past us and decided we might as well follow it. Within seconds, we came to a waterfall. We were surrounded by bushes full of berries and trees covered in fruit.
         "Bailey, do you see that?!" Lucas gasped excitedly. He pointed to the right of the waterfall. "Someone else is here!" He took my hand, and led me to the small, wooden cabin. We peered through the window.
          There was nothing inside but a board propped up with tree stumps, acting as a table. There was a stump next to it to sit on, too. On the table was a mess of old, tattered paper. The cabin looked pretty empty at the moment, but someone was sure to come back. Lucas pulled off a makeshift door and gestured for me to go in.
              Right away I grabbed the paper. I sat on the stump, and Lucas kneeled on the floor with his arm around me. I smiled a bit and looked back to the paper. It was a letter.
 Dear Reader,
                My ship took me to this island exactly 57 days ago. I recently finished building this structure, and hope it will be as much use to you as it was to me. I decided to journey farther, in expectation of finding civilization. When I do, I plan to collect supplies and return to my residence here.

          "There's still hope. He's coming back," I said. Lucas frowned, then put his finger on the date of the letter. July 7th, 1831.
          I began crying and slid off of the stump. Lucas hugged me as I sobbed. When I was finished I looked into his honest, brown eyes, and squeezed him tightly. He stroked my hair and delicately kissed my nose. The whole time, he said nothing. There wasn't anything to say. He wasn't going to lie to me. The truth was too obvious. We were never getting off this island.
