A Shot in the Dark

 Chapter 1

Karmin was at the counter making her and her brother Jason some dinner. Her parents were out late again at work and it was Friday night. “Great,” she thought, “home alone with my brother of all people, and there’s no one to hang out with.” All her friends were always out at some party, movie, or sleepover. But no one ever thought to call and include her in any of the fun. Karmin had finished making dinner and yelled, “Jason, come and eat!” She ate quickly because she wasn’t really that hungry, and went down to her room.

Karmin had the typical teenage girl’s room. There were bright colors, pinks, blues, and purples. She had a full sized bed with zebra blankets and a zebra Pillow Pet, waiting for someone to use him to rest their head on. On the floor next to the bed was a rug that looked like a bunch of fuzzy blue worms, nothing special about that. Over in the corner there was her TV and computer. Her computer was plugged into the wall charging. She was on it all night “studying” for her mid-term exams. Her TV was just a small flat screen; she didn’t use it that much though. There was a mirror on the wall near her bed with a small dresser under it, so she could do her make-up without hogging the bathroom in the morning. Necklaces, perfumes, earrings, and make-up were strewn across it. Karmin’s room was the only real room in the basement. There was a big open area on the other side, but that was just used for storage now.

Karmin sat sitting on her bed, listening to music, and checking out Twitter and Facebook. While on Facebook she saw some posts and pictures of her friends at parties or sleepovers. “Honestly, their parents must get sick of screaming girls and blaring music.”  That’s what she was thinking on the outside, but inside she secretly wanted to be there, hanging with her friends and possibly some guys.

After a while, she got thirsty, so she went back upstairs to get something to drink. Just to tick her off, her brother drank the last Mtn Dew. She yelled, “Jason, you moron! You knew I wanted that last Mtn Dew!”

“Yeah, well, you forgot about it and I was thirsty!” he yelled back. Jason was in his room playing Call of Duty again. Karmin had tried playing it before but thought it was dumb. That was mostly because she always got killed. Karmin found something else to drink and was walking back downstairs when she heard banging and glass shattering on the main floor. “Jason probably threw the controller out the window,” she thought. Then there was more banging. “Jason, was that you?” No answer. “Jason?” She went back upstairs to see what he was doing, but he wasn’t in his room, and that made her really nervous. It was a disaster. It looked like Hurricane Katrina had ripped through there. The bed was all messed up, sheets and pillows strewn everywhere. Muddy footprints covered the floor, and the window was indeed shattered. There was glass sprayed all over the floor, and a piece of a torn plaid flannel shirt was hanging from what was left of the window shards. More banging. She was getting really freaked out now. Whoever kidnapped her brother took him outside. Karmin went to look out there for him. She opened the door and when she stepped out, there was a gunshot.

This is my short story I had to write for Language Arts.
