Things aren't ever what they seem
Chapter Two
Alex and I pulled into the parking lot 20 minutes before the bell rang. As we got out of the car, we chatted and giggled. We walked to our lockers and got ready for class. Our friend Stephie came over a couple minutes later. She was a five-foot ball of energy with bouncy chocolate curls and matching eyes.
"Hey guys! So are you coming to my party? It's going to be awesome!"
"Hell yeah! I love Halloween parties!" I said.
At that moment, Derek, Stephie's boyfriend rounded the corner and came over. He was an average height guy with dark hair that hung limp on his forehead. His eyes were a nothing-special brown.
"Hey babe," he murmured into Stephie's ear. He didn't even bother saying hi to us. He pulled her into his arms and they started making out hungrily. I looked away in disgust. It's not like they'd notice; they were practically trying to eat each other's lips. Alex politely looked somewhere else. They finally came up for air a few seconds later.
"So," I said, trying to make conversation. "Are you going to Stephie's party?" I was hoping that he would say no. I didn't like Derek very much. He acted like an animal with Stephie. Stephie didn’t mind; in fact, she loved it. But I don’t trust guys whose brains are in their pants.
“Yeah. You guys coming?”
“Yes,” Alex said. She cast a sly glance at me. “Jade and I are going together.” She took my hand and cradled it. Derek looked confused for a second then blushed and mumbled something. Alex and I laughed.
“Dude, she was just joking,” I told him, still giggling.
“Ha ha,” he said, looking annoyed. “Come on Stephie, we got to get to Math.” Stephie looked like she wanted to protest, but she followed him when he turned anyway.
“Okay, bye guys! See you at lunch!” Sophie said as she bounced away.
“You hate that guy too, right?” Alex asked me, once Derek and Stephie were out of ear-shot. I let out a relieved breath.
"Yeah," I said. Then the bell rang and cleared my head.
