    Life Goes On
    Chapter 3
    Chapter 3; The House.
Amber's favorite room was an in home movie theatre. When I say movie theatre, I mean about ten rows going up with six seats across. You could invite all your friends to the movie and it wouldn't even fill up. There was a door off to the side that read "Snack Bar" on it, so I decided to check it out. There was chips and sodas, as well as a French fry vat in the back. "Gosh, Amber, this place is crazy! What kind of movies do you have?" I asked.
The short brunette looked up at me with her chocolate brown eyes. "Any type. My parents have their own theatre downstairs, and the boys have one upstairs. The other floors are just there. Of course, all the rooms have something in them. Like an arcade on floor ten, and floor eleven is like a dicso floor with loud music. It's an open roof. Floor seven has a swimming pool with snack bars to the side where people actually work. Floor five is my parents floor. Floor four through two are usually rented out. They have really nice rooms. Right now, we're renting eighteen out of the twenty rooms down there. The people pay us like three hundred a night, and can stay up to two weeks. There's also a resturant on six. But I'll show you around. Let's go look at the movies."
Amber led me out of the snack bar and up a metal ladder to the projection room. We flipped through a book that showed the movies playing. There were movies like Ted, to movies like Finding Nemo. "This is awesome. Can we check out the resturant? I'm starving." I wondered.
"Yeah, no problem. It's a TGIF." she smiled, leading me out of the theatre and to the elevator. When we got up there, I saw how large the place was. It probably had around forty tables, and the back was completely open, no window or anything. Just a balcony to keep you from falling. There was a bar, where a few of the guests were drinking.
The hostess came up to us. "Hey, Amber. Is this a new friend?" she asked.
"Nah, she lives here now. We adopted them." Amber patted my back. I wasn't gonna get used to being the "adopted" kid.
"Ah, of course! How's a free dinner sound tonight, girls?" she asked us. We both nodded and followed her to a seat near the open side. You could see New York City and it was amazing. I was so used to living in California.
A waitor came over and asked us what we wanted. Amber ordered steak with fries, and I ordered chicken tenders and fries.
While we waited, we talked. "So this house is pretty sick. Was it like, a hotel or something before you moved in?"
"I think so." Amber answered. "I've lived here since I was five. We did a lot of renovations."
I nodded. "My house was small. It was kinda dumpy, my mom let the place go after she developed cancer. She was a smoker, she got mouth cancer. It was a whole year that she smoked. Two packs in twelve hours. Sean and I tried to get her to stop, but she denied that she was developing cancer and continued to smoke. So that's how I got here."
Amber reached across the table and touched my arm sympathetically. "I'm so sorry, Alyssa. Oh, on a totally different note--how did you like your room?" she pulled her arm away.
My room! I remembered my phone and put it on the table to check my messages. "It's absolutely amazing. I can't believe it." I commented.
"Can you tell me more about yourself? Like, your childhood? I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours." Amber asked.
My childhood. "Yes. I used to have such a happy family, you know, when I was like nine. Before that, everything was perfect. Daddy took us to our soccer games, and Mommy took us to buy toys. Daddy would go work as a police man and my mom would take care of the house. We went to school, made friends, and played with them. When I turned nine, my dad became very interested in the war. He put in for military camp, then went on my tenth birthday. After that, he came home for about six months. Then, when I turned twelve, he went to military school. That took two years, and we barely ever saw him. When we did see him, he wouldn't be himself. He'd become stern. He wasn't fun anymore. All he wanted to do was watch the game--not our games, the NFL games. When I turned thirteen, he went to Afghanistan for the war. About a year passed. He visited for my fourteenth birthday, and the last thing I said to him was, 'Promise you'll come home for me?' And he replied, 'I promise.' His base was bombed that year and everyone inside died. Then you know about my mother. She died like two months ago. Here I am now." By the time I was done, I was crying and our food was in front of us. "Thank you." I said to the waitress.
"Gosh..." Amber whispered. "I'm so sorry. My childhood was this. All I did was run around and play hide and seek in here. I went to school, but all I did was learn. I made friends for what I had. Now it's changing. I want friends who like me for me. Don't you want that?"
I nodded and started to eat my food. She was right. Things should change.

    Life Goes On
    Chapter 2
    Chapter 2; Crazy room.
The elevator stopped on eight and I exited with Jennifer. “Let’s get you settled in. My daughter Amber is right next door to you.” The hallway was huge with about five rooms on each side, and a long window at one end. On the other end was a circular room with windows at every edge with girly things: bean bags, couches, and a large 100 inch flat screen TV. My mouth dropped when I noticed a bathroom off the windowed room. It was huge, with a Jacuzzi tub on one end, a shower on the other, and two doors which held two toilets in each one. Inside of those doors also was a sink. I was in awe.
Jennifer patted my shoulder and said, “Your room’s over here, Alyssa.” She put her arm around my back and guided me to the door closest to the windowed room. On the door, a sign read “Alyssa” in fancy lettering. It was a clear door, as were all the other doors in this hall. I hadn’t checked out any other rooms yet, though they seemed cool. I noticed how large the room was. There was a 72 inch flat screen TV on one wall and a large king sized bed on the other, across from the TV. Pink and purple couches lined the walls as well as a chair hanging from the ceiling with a cushion and pillows. Bean bags were strewn across the room and an iMac desktop was on another wall. An iHome was on a glass coffee table in the middle of an area to chill out, as well as a Macbook Air. Pink and purple walls completed the girly room, as well as white ceiling decorations hanging down.
I twisted the knob and walked in with my mouth hanging. "Oh...my...gosh..." Eyes wide, I felt my heart race as I walked to the bed. A white iPhone lay there. "That's... Me? Belongs to me!?" I gasped. Jennifer nodded and handed me the TV remote.
"You also have a walk in closet with a full fall wardrobe for school. We'll give it away in the winter and buy you a winter one. Then spring and summer go together. I'll bring up your old stuff. There's some shelves over there to display your belongings, and if you'd like to keep clothes, you can put them in your closet. Meanwhile, go meet Amber and she'll show you around the rest of the house. Her room's across from yours. Ta-ta!" Jennifer left my room. I noticed a white chandelier hanging from the middle of the ceiling, just over the foot of the bed.
I picked up my old junky phone and added all my old contacts in from the town over. I couldn't believe it. The house was ridiculous. I texted my best friend Kayla first. "dude, you know how i had to move the next town over because of my mom? oh yeah, this is alyssa btw. i got an iphone, too." It took about two seconds to get the response because she has an iPhone as well.
"Yeah, what about it? Are you ok? Is it a rathole? Want to spend the night here?" she replied.
"no exact opposite. its ridiculous! come over tm, ill show you. i have to go meet amber now. haha its so cool. eleven floors, elevator and everything." I typed mega fast.
"Dude, do you mean Amber Wells?" she answered quickly.
"yea haha why?" I sat down on the bed. Oh my, it was comfy.
"They're rich, man! Their dad use to own a TV business. They have like 90 billion dollars. I'll be there tomorrow. And have you met their son, Jacob? Super hot!" she was excited.
"ik theyre rich, i have so much stuff. youll see. ok im gonna go meet amber. shes showing me around." I answered, silencing the phone and standing up. I headed for the door, just as I saw a brunette girl knocking on mine.
Unlocking the door, I welcomed her. "Hey, you must be Amber." I smiled, welcoming her into the room.
"Yeah, you're Alyssa, right? Can't wait to have a girl around the house who's my age. We'll be going to the same school as East River, where you used to live. They shut down the school in our district, so we have to go there. I'll be fifteen in two months, in October. I heard you turned fifteen last week, so we'll be in tenth grade together." My, Amber loved to talk.
I simply smiled, because she seemed really nice. "Can you show me around this place? I'll get lost in the blink of an eye." I wondered, laughing.
She giggled and said, "Yeah, follow me." I followed after her real quickly.
"Oh, I was wondering, would your mom care if I had a friend over tomorrow? My best friend, I think you'll like her. She won't do any damage to this place." I asked.
"Not a problem. Okay, so this is one of my favorite rooms just through here." She opened the door to one of the rooms on our floor, and I gasped in amazement.

    Life Goes On
    Chapter 1
    Chapter 1; The Move
I walked up the steps to my new foster home for the first time. I searched for my brother’s hand, gripping it tightly as our foster parents opened the door for us. My brother was a year and a half older than me. He was a tall blonde with brown eyes. I was younger, and a girl. I was fifteen, short, blonde, and I had blue eyes. Sean was sixteen and a half. Mom had blue eyes, Dad had brown. That’s how it worked. My name was Alyssa, and my brother’s? Sean. Sean dropped my hand and walked into the house behind Robert and Jennifer, our foster parents.
I grabbed Sean’s arm and held him back. “There’s no way I’ll ever call either one of them ‘Mom’ or ‘Dad’.” I whispered as he shut the door to the huge house.
Sean shrugged my arm off. “Yeah, well lighten up. This house is awesome! I’d say we’re lucky to be in the situation we’re now in.” I gave him a glare as he pushed past me. I couldn’t believe he’d said that. We weren’t lucky at all at this point in time.
You’re probably wondering what happened to get us here in the first place. My parents were great people. My dad was into the war and protecting our country and all that stuff. His base was bombed and it collapsed over a year ago. After that, my mom went into depression and picked up smoking to rid of her sadness. After a few months, she developed sores in her mouth. White spots. She thought nothing of them, that maybe they were a sickness. That maybe they’d go away. She was wrong. Very wrong. More and more developed, but she felt she’d lost everything already and there was nothing more to lose. This all happened in a course of six months. Of course, Sean and I didn’t just sit there watching. We told her the sores were cancer when the first one appeared. She dismissed us and said we were wrong. We knew we were right since we took health classes. After the six months of numerous sores appearing, we took her to a doctor. He said she had less than five months, and there were too many spots to be removed and to get her to a hospital right then. I wasn’t quite sure why, you know, since they couldn’t do anything. She died four and a half months later of cancer.
So that’s our story and situation, and you should now understand why we aren’t lucky at all. I chased after Sean, Robert and Jennifer. They were guiding us to our rooms. They already had two kids of their own, who were fourteen and sixteen. The guy was sixteen, the girl was fourteen. I’d never met them before. We walked over to a corner of the house with a silver door and buttons lining the wall. “Is this an..?” Sean began.
“Elevator? Yes.” Robert cut him off. “Your rooms are upstairs. We have stairs, too, but we thought we’d show you this as well.” Sean and I nodded and faced forward, climbing onto the elevator as the doors opened.
Sean was the first on the large elevator, gasping as he noticed the glass around us. “How tall is this place?!” he asked in amazement.
“Eleven floors,” Jennifer bragged. “But hey, it’s now your house, too. Live it up.” She paused, then started to talk again, “We got a lot of stuff for your rooms. We asked our kids what kids your ages would like, and we filled it up. Feel free to bring some of the stuff from the moving trucks. The rooms are big enough for everything you’ve brought.”
In amazement, I commented, “Thank you, Jennifer. What floor am I on? And Sean?”
She swallowed before talking again. “You’ll be on floor eight while Sean’s on nine.”
