    Nothing about what goes on
    inside of my head is
    beautiful.
The scars on my wrist aren't
    tragically beautiful,
    they're just tragic.
    Nothing about being scared
    of the thoughts within my
    own head is
    beautiful.
There is no boy who is
    going to save me and
    magically "fix" me.
    This isn't a fairytale,

    You hear a noise.
It's a soft clink followed by footsteps in your yard. You spring to your feet, and race to the door. Flinging it open wide, you race to your backyard. There, you see one thing, and one thing only: a spilled milkshake. Happy tears fill your eyes as you gingerly pick up the milkshake. The wind blows your hair back as you stare off into the sunset and whisper softly to yourself: The boys were here.

    There was once this boy,
    he was very beautiful,
    the type of beautiful
    that takes your breath
    away.
He sat in front of me
    in English class,
    period five.
    He never spoke a word,
    nor did I ever speak
    to him, despite how
    much I wanted to.
    He had blue eyes,
    and brown hair,
    and he wore a
    light blue cardigan.
    One day, he wasn't
    in class and my
    heart sank.
    Then, one week later,
    the newspaper said:
    local boy commits suicide.
He wrote a leater to his
    friends, and to his family,
    telling that he loved them
and that it wasn't their faults.
He wrote a note to the sad
    girl who sat behind him
    in English class, period five,
telling her that she was beautiful.

    I fell in love once.
It was a Saturday morning, I believe.
I was riding the public bus to go
    somewhere; that morning, I woke
up and decided I wanted to go
    on an adventure,
    so I did.
He sat in front of me,
    his name, I didn't know.
    But he had brown hair
    and expressive brown eyes.
    When he took his seat,
he gave me a small smile,
    one that made my heart
skip a beat; the same one every
    cliché romance novel has
    ever written about.
    I sat there quietly,
    watching him secretly,
he was too lost within his music
to pay me any mind either way.
I don't know why I fell in love with
this boy, but I know that I did.
Maybe it was the way his eyes
gleamed in the sun, or, maybe,
it was the way that he didn't
pay any mind to the world around
him. Perhaps, it was the way his
smile seemed to make the whole
    world melt around;
    perhaps, just maybe, it was
the way that when he looked
me in the eyes, for that brief'
moment in time, I, for the
    first time, felt truly beautiful.
This boy got off the bus five
stops later; I never learned his
name, nor did I even speak
a word to him. But I fell
    in love with him.
    Wholly and truly.
    With that boy
    who sat in front
of me on the bus that
    one Saturday morning.

What a shame. We grew up never believing that we were beautiful,
because no one ever told us that we were. We made friends who liked to complain about their stomachs, noses, and the size of their thighs. And we joined in because that's what you do, isn't it? And so, we never told ourselves, either.
In 8th grade, a boy we barely knew calls us fat. We will never know if he
was joking, or why. We were bullied about our long, messy hair. So we chop it all off. And we became invisible. It was years before we resurfaced, before we learned to do things just for the sake of ourselves.
Someone tells us we're beautiful, and now, we don't believe them. But, we
have new friends and they tell us, too. And then we hear it from a stranger. Mom apologizes for not telling us enough when we were younger. And slowly, we start to belive it. And now, we know.
We know that, despite everything we'd been told, being beautiful has
nothing to do with our worth. But, how unfortunate, we think, that we couldn't know we were beautiful until someone else told us that we were.
We were never even told it was an option.

Everyone and everything changes; it's inevitable. We watch the leaves change every season. The caterpillar changes into a butterfly. But not all change is beautiful, sometimes it's ugly. Our hearts break as we watch those we once loved turn into someone new. We watch in shock as they transform into something we never thought they were. Before it, we've changed too. Everyone and everything changes, yet we still live by our motto "stay gold." But what's the point? Nothing gold can stay.

I don't know why we all hang onto something we know we're better off letting of. It's like we're scared to lose what we really don't even have. Some of us say we'd rather have something than nothing at all but the truth is... to have something halfway is harder than not having it at all.

To let go isn't to forget, not to think about, or ignore. It doesn't leave feelings of anger, jealousy, or regret. Letting go isn't about winning or losing. It's not about pride and it's not about how you appear, and it's not obsessing or dwelling on the past. Letting go isn't blocking memories or thinking sad thoughts, and doesn't leave emptiness, hurt, or sadness. It's not about giving in or giving up. Letting go isn't about loss and it's not about defeat. To let go is to cherish the memories, but to overcome and move on. It is having an openmind and confidence in the future. Letting go is learning, experiencing, and growing. To let go is to be thankful for the experiences that made you laugh, made you cry, and made you grow. It's about all that you have, all that you had, and all that you soon will gain. Letting go is having the courage to accept change and the strength to keep moving. Letting go is growing up.
