‘There are several courses you’ll all be completing. The first is the 4k sprint around the entire campus.’ His hands gestured towards the outside oval. ‘Second is the rope climb, you’ll only start this task once you’ve finished the sprint.’ Reith glanced towards Yumi as her expression fell. It would take her forever to complete the first course and the embarrassment from that would be enough to have her hiding in the bathrooms for the entire lunch. He sighed and gripped her hand.
‘People understand what position you’re in here, they’re not going to judge you no matter how long you take. They’ll simply cheer you on.’
Her gaze moved up. ‘You really think so?’
‘Come on,’ Reith laughed a little. ‘You’re losing all your confidence now? That doesn’t sound like you at all. The Yumi I know wouldn’t care what others think and would give it her best shot.’
A grin sprawled across her face. ‘You’re right.’
‘After the rope climb there’s a station set up with yellow markers, where each and every one of you will perform the course of ten push ups followed by ten sit ups.’ Groans filled the room. ‘Now get to it!’
Reith and Yumi both rose together and started a paced jog towards the outskirts of the campus perimeter. She was doing alright so far and they both managed to keep in line with everyone else around them.
‘This is completely pointless,’ a voice groaned from the side. Reith edged over a little to allow Carter to move past. He was known around campus for his athletic abilities so it was best to keep out of his way. Close behind him several other students ducked their heads and tried to pump forwards, keeping at least a small distance between themselves and Carter. They would surely tire out soon and fall behind.
‘I’m sorry Reith…’
He blinked a little and glanced towards Yumi. ‘What for?’
She breathed in heavily and slowed down, bending over to catch her breath. ‘I can do it. If I fail you’re going to fail to.’
‘Eh, come on don’t say that.’ Reith leant down on his knees before her. ‘Come on, I’ll carry you most of the way.’
Her eyes widened. ‘What?’
‘You heard me, now get on. If we stay close enough to the back none of the more serious competitors will tell Mr Harnish on us.’
Slowly she pulled herself up and wrapped her legs around his waist. ‘For your information this is completely awkward.’
Reith laughed and stood up, moving into a faster sprint. It wasn’t in his nature to help others… but if it was Yumi… he didn’t mind.
