part 31
303""Today at the rec games, I reffed two games in a row with Max, a kid who was two years
younger than me. By the time we were done, I was so tired. Jason was at the other fields. I walked over to the pavilion and gave in my shirt, whistle, timer, cards, and flags. I waited for all the other refs to come back, too. Jason and his best friend, Eric, walked over first. They sat across from me. I waited for one of them to start talking...
"Dude, Ray bent it into the net, corner kick. It was crazy," Eric said finally.
Ray was Eric's little brother. His little sister, Avery, came up after. She hugged Jason.
"Jayjay," she said.
"Ave, what's up?"
"Nothing, we lost."
Jason shrugged, Avery walked over to me, and hugged me.
"You're one of the two people I'd ever hug..."
I smiled at this. Obviously the second was Jason. He smiled too. Avery always knew how to make everyone's days.
We all just sat there. It wasn't an awkward moment, but a nice one. We were all friends. Maybe that's all we'd ever be.
"Ahh. Okay we should probably go now, Eric."
"Okay. Bye, Cat."
I looked confused.
"We're going to an Army vs. Navy game."
"Oh okay."
They just turned around and left. Wow.
I just sat there. I closed my eyes, drifted asleep. Deeply into sleep.
I woke up in the middle of the field, red card in my hand, Jason shaking me awake.
"Cat. Caaaat. Cat, wake up."
I opened my eyes.
"What did I do?"
He pointed to the biggest kid on the team, then the red card in my hand. I think I got the picture. I got back up.
"No, no, no, no, no. You can't keep reffing. We've gotta get you home."
"Honestly, I'm fine."
He let me keep going. It's not like he can tell me what to do. We ended the game and we just went home. I guess I need to keep working on getting him to know me more.

"Boyfriend?", his smile faded.
Uh-oh. This isn't going to be good.
I nodded slowly, and regretfully.
"That's . . . cool," Tyler replied.
"It is. It's really cool," Jake said sarcastically. He pulled my arm, trying to get out of this conversation.
"Oh, I guess I have to go. I'll see you later?"
He just nodded. Jake pulled me into the house. I was secretly relieved.
"Jake, what are you doing?"
"Trying to get out of the conversation."
"Ah, I got you."
He winked. Okay, so things were getting awkward. I didn't know what to say. He just stared at me. Guess who texted me? Just guess. You will never get it right.
Okay, you might. It was Maci.
Maci: hey, why'd u 2 ditch?
Me: my dad came home. finally. its been years.
Maci: oh tell him i said hi, if he still remembers me :)
Me: will do :)
I didn't tell my dad she said "hi". Oh well. Jake was at the kitchen table, face in his hands, eyes all red.
"Jake, what's wrong?"
"My mother. She got in a car accident a few hours ago. She's in the hospital."
"L-let's go see her! NOW!"
"Cat, no. It'll take hours."
I pulled his arm, and led him to the car. Once we were both in, he drove. Hours. Hours, hours . . . . . .

My mom got home the next morning, with tears in her eyes. Obviously, she was excited to see my dad. Everything was perfect. Or so I thought. My neighbor, Ty. I might have you confused, so I shall explain. When I was born, my best friend in the whole world was Jake, I lived in New York. Then, I moved to North Carolina. Then, I moved back to New York. It's confusing. For the time I lived in North Carolina, my new best friend, Ty, was a short, scrawny kid. Now? He was tall, muscular, and a surfer. Wow. He came over today at around 1:00. My parents were out to lunch, and Jake and I were trying to fix his car. I had no idea what I was doing.
"Hi, you're the new neighbors?", Ty asked.
"Yeah, I'm Jake," he said, shaking his hand.
"Hey, Ty," I said with a smile. He looked confused at first.
"Cat?"
"Yeah."
He hugged me, but I pulled away once I remembered Jake was standing right next to me.
"This is my boyfriend, Jake."
He smiled.

When we woke up, we just smiled at each other. Dad was getting Mom, and we were all alone. We were going to have some fun. Wink, wink.
We got dressed, and I put on jeans, and a black and white checkered T-shirt from Hot Topic. I put my hair up in a quick side pony tail, and only put on a little eyeliner, and mascara. Who cares? Jake, on the other hand, took five minutes getting dressed. And he looked absolutely amazing. Not fair.
We went to the local mall, and just hung out. I knew right then, when he kissed me in front of the whole mall, that he was going to be the one. I got looks of envy the whole day. Who knew that just by being with a hot guy, you could turn into someone's role model?
It got awkward when we were in the back of the truck. People were staring as we were kissing. It got intense, but I didn't want to stop. I got tougher and he followed. When the people went away, we got in the front and drove back to the house. Madre and padre would be home tomorrow. Ahh, home.
"Cat. I love you."
I could tell he meant it, because his eyes sparkled. I hated saying "I love you", but I did love him. More then anything. More then everything.
"I love you, too."
My failed attempt at being flirty was to poke his amazing abs. He laughed. I was going to marry him.
"Are you going to marry me?", I asked.
"Of course."
"Everyone will be jealous of me."
"Nah, everyone will be jealous of me. Because they don't have a beautiful girl."
I blushed. He was wrong though. I wasn't beautiful. At least I don't think so.

"Dad, you don't know how happy I am to see you."
I hugged him tightly as tears came. He hugged me back. I haven't seen him in a year. My own dad. I couldn't believe this. He came back with out any major scars, besides a sprained wrist.
"I love you, Cat. We have a years worth of catching up to do. But, first, we both need to thank your friend Jake over there."
I completely forgot Jake was there. I waved him over, and we both hugged him. Tears stained his shirt.
"Daddy, I love you."
"I love you, too, baby. Tonight we're going out to dinner. Jake is welcome to come too. Oh, and don't tell your mother I'm home. I'm going to surprise her."
I couldn't believe this. I was so happy. My life is perfect right now.
"When are you going back?"
"Many, many years."
YEEEEHAAAW!!!!
"Oh my goodness. Dad, you are the best. Seriously, I love you. So much."
We talked for 8 hours straight. There was so much to talk about. Tomorrow, Dad was going to go to Mom's vacation house and bring her here. We were going to move here.
"Honey, remember this place? This was our home. When you were little."
"Of course I remember. I love this, Daddy."
"Good. Go get some sleep, we have a big day tomorrow."
Jake and I slept in my old room. I thanked him over and over again. He set this up.

part 24
Once I had everyone's attention, I walked over to Jake, looked him in the eyes, and pointed to the people.
"There's your crowd. Now, tell me off. Insult me some more. So everyone can see how embarrassed I am inside."
He just stared at me. I am good. I felt my face getting red. I heard many of the girls talking about how hot he was.
"Girls, he's single! He has broken my heart, and is not afraid to do it again. Let's go. If there's a girl out there who doesn't mind to if she's told what to do, like she's property, step up here."
No one moved.
"Cat, you're drunk."
"I'm not, Jake. You're just surprised that I'm sticking up to you after so long of being your personal property. Jake, you don't even know how I feel right now. I have a father, who is coming home tomorrow night. I don't need you trying to act like him."
I heard whistles from girls who were proud of a girl who finally stood up for her rights. I grabbed my skateboard, and tried to make my way through the crowd. It was hard, though. I got many boob grabs from drunk guys, and I was stepped on. It's hard being short. I saw Jake trying to chase me.
When we got to the street, he ran to me. I forgot he was an athlete.
"Cat, please."
"What? You missed your chance. You're not going to embarrass me now."
I turned away and walked. To no where in particular. Just walked. Trying to get him to follow.
"Cat, you have this all wrong."
"HOW?"
He looked like he was going to cry. He grabbed me by the arm and walked me to his truck. I refused to go in. He picked me up, and put me in. Wow.
"Let me explain this, Cat. My last girlfriend, I mean, before you. Laurie. She was my secret girlfriend, since she didn't want it getting out."
I nodded. Trying to understand.
"She," he continued, "almost died. That's why she's in a wheelchair. She was dumb. Kind of like you. But not as much."
He was kidding. I laughed, but stopped quickly. I nodded at him to continue.
"She went to a party, when I broke my arm. It was her, 5 other guys, and Maci. They got drunk, and decided it would be funny if they started wrestling. Laurie and Maci tried to leave, but the guys didn't want that."
He shuddered.
"Don't finish."
"I'm only trying to make sure that these homos in our town don't do this to you."
"What about you? You got glass in your eye. How can I protect you?"
He just laughed.
"I think I'm good, Cat."
He drove past my house. Where were we going? We passed town after town. Eventually, we were in a town that I've never even heard of.
"JAKE. Tell me where we're going. My dad is coming home tomorrow."
"You'll see."

part 17
He sat up, and I sat on his lap. We fell asleep, peacefully. Finally.
When we woke up, it was 2 P.M. He was already awake and texting. I sat up and once again, hit my head on the pole about my bed. I rolled off and fell on the floor. I layed on the floor face down. Jake was laughing, so I shot him a "You better shut up" look. He rolled on top of me and shouted, "Good mornin' my lady."
"Hey," I replied.
"How was your sleep?"
"Good. Good, sonny. How was yours?"
"Just fiiinne girl."
I smiled. He also smiled his gorgeous smile.
"Your smile is gorgeous."
"I get that a lot." He winked.
"You suck, Jake."
Later, we went to the mall. We went to Sephora and Hot Topic. I tool an eye shadow brush and swiped a bright pink stripe across is face. He took a green lipstick and drew a heart on my forehead. We walked around the mall getting constant looks of jealousy from girls. They were jealous of MY boyfriend. I smiled at the thought. I heard comments like "he's HOT" and "how is she with him, and I'm not?".
Since both of our parents's were out of town, we've been spending a lot of time together.
