i once knew a girl
who had peculiar eyes
they weren't bright, or playful
they were empty inside
they'd stare at you, emotionless
they were so blunt and so cold
it was very odd for a six year old
she'd waddle 'round with an untied shoe
with her teddy bear clenched in the crease of her elbow
'round and 'round the big open yard
but waiting, waiting, for what? Who?
you'd sometimes see her looking out the window at night
staring up at the twinkling little sky lights
and you'd get a glimpse; a fraction of a second
where'd you see the light in her eyes; what should have been right
as she got a little older, she'd glare up at you
then sometimes she'd yell, saying the compliments weren't true
she'd storm off to her lonely room with her crayons and paper
and no one would worry, even if she asked them to
by age sixteen she was a very odd girl
yes, a very odd girl in a very dangerous world
i see her still, she's in my class
but the others see through her like invisible glass
i know a girl

sometimes she'll lean against my shoulder
and always, always, my breath would catch in my throat
