A Shot in the Dark
Chapter 1

"Why can't I breathe?" I thought.
The lights above me were blinding and the doctor's hands were cold.
Blood was pouring from a bullet wound in my head
and the doctor was saying something about another bullet lodged in my spine.
My parents were standing in the doorway, both sobbing.
Somehow, just having them there was comforting to me.
Almost on que, a nurse asked my parents to sit in the waiting room.
Being the stubborn old bat that he is,
my dad refused to leave.
He eventually got so angry that security had to be called
and he was dragged from the room by his arms, my mother following.
I couldn't feel my legs,
almost as if they weren't even there.
One of the machines I was hooked up to started beeping faster.
One nurse leaned out the door and screamed
"Code blue in room 6!"
Having a nurse for a mother, I knew what code blue meant.
I was dying.
Before my mind could completely register what was happening,
my vision went dark except for a small white light.
The heart monitor I was connected to changed from
a fast, steady beep, to a constant, high pitched squeal.
Suddenly, I felt two bursts of electricity press down on my chest,
and my vision came back.
Everybody in the room sighed relief,
and the doctor began making calls to get me into surgery to have the bullets removed from my skull and back.
A few minutes later, two nurses started pulling my bed down the hall towards the OR.
When we got there, my IV bag was switched
and everything soon returned to blackness.
