Picking Up The Pieces
Part One
Comercial. I took my hand out of the bag of chips and wiped it on my jeans, reaching over, I grabbed my phone, two missed calls. Lacey. I hit talk,
"Babe! I'm on my way to get you, I need you to do my make up and help me find something to wear!"
"Why, where are you going?"
"We. WE are going to Cadillac Ranch!" she happily burst. I sighed,
"Lace, I don't wanna go...I have-" Spongebob came back on, she laughed.
"Plans?" she joked, "because you know, staying at home and watching Spongebob on a Friday night is the coolest thing ever. It's not like they play the same ones everyday." she snickered.
"Cause lying to your mom about seeing a movie, then us sneaking to the bar so you can get wasted and make out with Cameron is JUST the absolute best way to spend my Friday night?" She couldn't see it, but I was smirking.
"Oh come on Lynds, that only happened once and you know it. It'll be fun, Cameron and his friends are gonna be there, and his friends are pretty cute.... If me and him weren't dating I'd-" She pauses momentarilly to curse at a car that just cut her off, "Learn how to drive a**hole!" she huffs, I giggle. "I'd probably be dating one of them," she finishes calm as ever. I don't reply, just draw the curtains back when I hear two short, impaient honks. She's here. I change into new skinny jeans and a lose top. Two more beeps. I grabbed my heels, cellphone, and purse and walked to the little darkblue BMW at the end of my drive way. She beeped again and flashed me a smile, just to be cute.
"Hurry up, I gotta go put gas in it." She mumbled on something about her mom, but I wasn't listening; what was I doing? Just gazing out the window like I normally do. Yeah, we're best friends. She turned on the radio to some main stream pop song, I remember listening to this same song when her and Cole broke up. Back when we still were best friends, when we weren't sneaking out to the bar to see some guy who was crazy about her, before she started drinking, before being her best friend was a job.
"Lynds! What heck are you looking at?!"
"Nothing! Jeeze, what do you want?" I quipped.
"We're here doofus." I laughed a little, got out of the car, and walking up her cobble stone steps, I looked up at her in front of me. I thought of everything I wanted to say to her, but I just couldn't find the words to tell her. I couldn't even talk to her, and she's my best friend. What did we become? I jumped, lost in thoughts, she hit me with a pillow.
"Lyndsay, we have like half an hour before Cam starts, so come on let's go make ourselves beautiful!"
"I'll get the paper bags." She giggled.
"Oh hush!" There's my best friend. That's the real Lacey.
