Eyes Open
Douglass
I was cleaning up the tables after
the kids left to go outside play games and such when Mrs. Krames
comes up to me with a saddened face,"Doug something's
happened over night. Jacob ran away after a meeting with his
parents."
Suddenly a pit in my gut started to form and my hands
trembled,"Meeting with his...parents..? Oh no."
"What's wrong?"
I put on my jacket and black cap,"His father's a lawyer
and knows the law obviously. He's been trying to get custody
of Jacob even after all of that's happened."
I was halfway out the door and she followed,"I had no idea,
Jacob hasn't said a word about what happened to
anyone."
I turn to her just as I walk outside onto the snow,"He
hasn't told anyone here but me. I have to go find
him."
"Good luck, Doug!" she called out as I walked passed
the big blue gates of LCF. I raised a thumbs up still walking on
into town.
---
As night began to set in, the snow storm got worse and worse. My
ears were solid and I couldn't feel my face because the wind
was horrible.
"Jacob! Jacob where are you!?" I called out. He had to
have heard me. The only sound in this sleeping town was the icy
wind. "Jacob!!"
I felt my hip giving out with every step I took. Chronic Pain
sucks, just saying. I began to see a bench at a bus stop with a
lump of white sparkling dust dancing around in the wind. As I got
closer a realized it was Jacob sitting down wrapped in his blue
bed comforter, trembling with every passing wind.
I walked by smoothly and pretend to just notice him sitting
there,"And what are you doing on this fine warm night?"
I asked.
He jerked around and sighed in relief that it was
me,"J-Jacob's waiting for the bus." He said with
numb purple lips.
I sat down next to him and looked out down the deserted
street,"Well its gonna be a long wait considering the next
bus doesn't come until," I checked my
watch,"tomorrow morning."
Jacob shivered as more white glitter leaps off of his
shoulders,"Jacob can wait. If jacob goes back bad things
will happen."
I nodded,"Well, its kinda chilly out and I think your a bit
hungry, no?"
Jacob nodded and so I helped him up and put the comforter in my
backpack, took off my jacket and wrapped him in it. Holding his
small hand we walked to Speedy's, a local food place
that's been there for ages. I ordered two thick and juicy
burgers for us to eat and at the end the waitress gave me to
bill.
"Got any cash?" I asked. Jacob shook his
head,"This one's on me then."
After a pause i finally said,"Yanno, the bus isn't a
free ride."
He looked at me and a small smile appeared on his round
face,"Jacob wants to see MooMoo."
I smiled,"MooMoo is probably asleep but sure, lets
go."
---
In the barn we go up to the stall and at its center was the big
old spotted cow with a huge scar across her back, sleeping
blissfully in the hay. Jacob curls up next to her and runs his
hands over her scar,"What happened to her, Douggy?" he
whispered.
I knelt down and looked at the scar,"MooMoo, just like the
kids here, was abused by her owner when she was little.
That's her scar to show it. We rescued her and healed her up
and now she helps make the kids here feel better. She's just
like you," I roughed up the little boys dark hair and
smiled,"she doesn't talk much but she has a lot to
say."
Jacob smiled and huddled up against the big animal and fell
asleep. Just before I covered him he jerked and pleaded,"No
covers." with horrid eyes.
I nodded and let him sleep. I eventually fell asleep leaned
against the wooden stall.
