Chapter
2
“What’s he
here for?”
“I don’t know,” she spat. “Go ask him
yourself.”
“Me?” I breathed. “Oh, Nurse Martin, I
don’t talk to boys.”
She tilted her head at me. “A gorgeous girl like
you?”
Her words took my off-guard. “Gorgeous?” I
repeated.
She flashed a smile to me. “Yes, Kail, I think you’re
gorgeous.”
I snorted. “Well, the people I go to school with clearly
don’t. I’ve never been asked out. Ever.”
“Well, he’ll think you’re just as gorgeous as I
do. I promise. He’s sweet; I talked to him this
morning.”
Nurse Martin wasn’t old in any aspect of the word, but she
wasn’t exactly young either. I assumed she was around
forty. She was a thin lady with blond hair to her shoulders and
narrow blue eyes. She wasn’t the prettiest thing, but she
was the nicest woman I’d ever encountered. She treated all
her patients like her children, because she didn’t have any
of her own.
I glanced back over at him, but he was toying with his food. It
disappointed me, I wanted to see his eyes again.
We picked up a tray with a fruit salad on it for me. Because I
was being prepped for chemotherapy, my diet was limiting of most
of the foods I liked, like sugar, carbs, and fried food. I was
basically living off of fruit, nuts, and yogurt. I felt myself
losing weight even though I hadn’t even started the
treatment yet.
“Don’t look now,” Nurse Martin breathed as we
searched for a table, “but he’s looking at you
again.”
Of course, just like anyone else in my situation would do, I
picked my head up and directed my gaze towards his section of the
cafeteria.
She was right; he was looking at me. This time, though, instead
of just looking, I noticed a slight curve in the left side of his
mouth. No, he wasn’t just looking. He was smiling.
“I told you not to look,” she hissed.
I only half-heard her, my eyes still locked on his. I found
myself frozen, unable to speak or even think of anything other
than his smile, captivated by his eyes.
Her voice echoed back in to my thoughts. “You want to talk
to him.”
I was immediately snapped out of his trance. “No,” I
breathed. “I just told you, I’ve never flirted with a
boy before in my life.”
“Well, you have to start somewhere,” she noted, and
began striding confidently in the direction of the boy with the
beautiful eyes.
I stood unmoving in the middle of the lunchroom. I couldn’t
remain stationary, but I couldn’t bring myself to follow
her either. After glancing around the café for a few
seconds, I unwillingly found myself scampering after her.
“Hi, Anthony, this is Kaitlyn. She’s a patient here
too,” she introduced.
He smiled politely, moving his eyes to my face.
And everything that we would become and endure all started with a
very simple, “Hello.”
Not
sure if I'm feeling another chapter tonight or not. Hmm. What
do you think?
